  1. Shanahan and Cowher don't want to coach here, even for 10 million a year...wow

Last time I looked Shanahan won SB's with John Elway and hasn't been back since. It took Elway three years to learn that west coast offense, the playbook has an enormous amount of plays in it. It is probably why Gruden couldn't get his QB's to function right away either. I wonder if Dan Snyder can wait 3 years to start winning?

It took Bill Cowher how many years of drafting before he found big ben, 14 years sound about right? So if appointed the new Bills head coach he would need to hire someone to run the offense because he doesn't know how.

I say screw those two, and anyone else who doesn't like Buffalo for whatever reason. Like Marv used to say, "when its to tough for them, its just right for us"!

I loved the cold weather and the effect on other teams, all those 90 era playoff games in the snow and cold and some Bills players not wearing sleeves, it was awesome.

The Bills need to find an astute offensive mind, someone who can actually teach a QB to progress rather then regress. Look at what has happened in Buffalo since the Jim Kelly years, the Bills offense has been 25th or worse an entire decade.

Jim Kelly had Ted Marchibroda to teach him, the same guy who taught Bert Jones. An Offensive coach with a positive history of bringing along a young QB is a must for this team.

I look at the guy who trained Drew Brees, the same guy who trained Phillip Rivers, the same guy who trained Joe Flacco. Jeez, with a track record like his I don't get why he isn't being looked at for head coach.

The Bills need a power running game for those wintry playoff days and a good passing game for those harsh winds in RW stadium. I look at the Ravens with envious eyes and wish the Bills had a power running game like theirs, a young QB like theirs, an O line like theirs.

I think Cameron has proven himself to be a great O.C. I just don't know if that can/will translate into being a successful H.C. I don't necessarily hold the 1-15 season against him. It's just that some guys are better suited to be Coordinators and not Head Coaches. He might very well be one of them.

  2. We're not some consolation prize. We're a class-of-the-NFL fan base and organization and we deserve someone who wants to be here. I'm sick and tired of the Bills being looked at as the Siberia of the NFL....that's crap. Upstate/Western NY is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL place to live. I spent twelve years of my life there and I pretty much consider it my home. The people there are down to earth, hard working, family-oriented, and loyal. We don't need some prima donna who is "settling" on the Buffalo job....Nix needs to bring someone in here who is passionate about the region, our players, and our fans.

I want someone who WANTS to be here and to become the leader of our Bills community.

Well that narrows it down to Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas. Good luck with that.

  3. I think Cowher does want to coach this year. Just not in Buffalo if he can help it. Right now the Bills are Cowher's "date insurance" for the prom. He knows he can dance with us but is waiting to see if any prettier girls will go with him.

While Cowher can always go back to CBS I think he feels like he can't waste another year from the NFL. The longer he's out of coaching the more the game will pass him by. That's why he can't bring himself to say no to the Bills like Shanahan did.

When it comes done to it, and no better jobs are available, he may say yes eventually. The problem for Buffalo is we can't wait around for Cowher to decide. We have to look at other candidates.

    PTR

I think this might be the most accurate assessment of the Cowher situation. Buffalo is clearly not his first choice. Other than someone who's either never coached before (Mularkey, Williams) or someone who couldn't dream of any other team wanting him (Jauron), who would have Buffalo as their first choice???

He hasn't said no, so it's still alive. And money talks, and Ralph seems to have the checkbook open. I do, however, think Cowher is too classy and professional to leave the Bills hanging. If it was an absolute "NO," he would have said so. It's just not a "YES" yet.

    Just don't listen to Schefter.

  4. Maybe I'm nuts, but special teams is the 3rd phase (in order of importance) of a gameplan. Why does everyone think Bobby April walks on water? And where have our stellar special teams gotten us in the past decade? It's kicking the ball, making blocks and tackling kick returners. The formations and blocking patterns are practically identical from team to team all around the league. I'm sure if we have another losing record next year, there will be hundreds of posts blaming Ralph for letting Bobby April go.

  5. What's wrong with Brian Billick besides the fact that he's not Bill Cowher?

With Tony Dungy staying retired, Jon Gruden staying in the booth, Mike Holmgren becoming Cleveland's GM, Mike Shanahan giving us the finger and most likely going to Washington, and now reports that Cowher's going back to the booth; I think Billick may very well be our best option.

The man does have a Super Bowl ring after all.

Seriously. He won a Super Bowl with a Quarterback that was nearly bad enough to start for Buffalo. That says something.

  6. If the Bills sign Vick, season tickets will sell faster than ever. I agree with everyone who says he's a scumbag for what he's done. It was terrible, what he's done. Do you think Ravens fans dropped their tickets after they let Ray Lewis play after murdering someone? I doubt it. And for each person saying they'll stop rooting for the Bills, there will be 10 more to take your place. Back before Vick signed with Philly, I was one of those saying I'd find another team if Buffalo signed him. But why give one person that much power? Vick isn't bigger than any team. He's one person. And if he comes to Buffalo, I'm sure as hell not going to run out and buy a number 7 jersey. But I'll still be rooting for my TEAM to win ever Sunday. Like I said, what he did was disgusting and horrible. But let's put it into perspective a little bit. He didn't rape or murder any people. I have 2 cats and a dog. Would I send my dog to stay with Vick down in Virginia? No. But I'll take him on the Bills if he can get us over the hump in a heartbeat.

  7. Other than the law of averages, I don't see why any top FA would want to come here. Believe me, I am forever the optimist when it comes to the Bills. But let's face it, we've had 5 winning seasons (most of them 10-6) in the last 15 years, with no playoff appearances in the last 10. Drew Bledsoe was the last QB to beat New England. Since Thurman left, Travis Henry has been the best RB we've had. And we haven't had a decent QB since Kelly hung 'em up.

So why ... why would any top FA even consider coming to Buffalo? Money??? Two words ... Ralph Wilson.

Keep the fingers crossed for one hell of a draft.

  8. T.O. did what he set out to do. He was a good teammate. Practiced hard, played hard (with the exception of a couple games) for the most part. Proved he could still play. And most importantly ... he stayed healthy. Any team that has a decent offense and decent coaching will be lucky to have him. Still got gas in the tank. As far as I'm concerned, he did nothing wrong while wearing a Bills uniform.

And as far as his "tweet" goes ... Buffalo was just mathematically eliminated. That's all he was saying. The season is over.

I actually hope Ralph and Co. make some quick moves and prove there might be something worth playing for in Buffalo next year. And I hope they do it quickly enough to make T.O. want to stay. He's alright, in my book.

  9. I think Incognito could be a huge, huge addition to this Buffalo Bills football team. I hope he works out and the Bills sign him to a longer contract.

I want a mean, I will crush you, I will hurt you and I will break you into little pieces type attitude on the O-line.

To protect JP when they sign him next season?

  10. I've been away for a couple of days so I hadn't seen that yet. Really? Herm Edwards? Do you watch football? Jauron made him look like Kotite last year. Herm Edwards? I watch him on First Take when he's on and he sounds like a moron who constantly contradicts himself. He seems like a nice guy but so did Dick Jauron.

Herm "Jackie Childs" Edwards. "You used the balm? Who told you to use the balm? I didn't tell you to use the balm."

  11. Look at it this way. Holmgren already said "no thanks" to the Bills so it's not like we missed out on him. Second, the only candidates you can hire now are not working. That limits your choices greatly. The Bills already said GM interviews begin after Xmas. Is the idea to hire someone first or someone good? BTW the Rooney rule applies to GMs too. Looks like Cleveland and Washington are going to fined fir their hasty hires.

    PTR

That Rooney rule is disgusting. As far as Holmgren goes, I think it says a lot that he wouldn't even discuss anything with Buffalo. I found it classy that he didn't bother wasting his, or the Bills' time, though. It's clear he wouldn't even give coming to Buffalo a second thought, and I'd just like to know why. I mean, there's plenty of obvious reasons why, but the fact that he's "this close" to going to Cleveland ... that's what makes me wonder. Cleveland is the only team (maybe Detroit) that's anywhere NEAR as dysfunctional as the Bills. But Holmgren obviously thinks we win the dysfunctional contest, hands down. The only thing I can possibly think, is that it's either Ralph Wilson himself ... or the fact that Ralph Wilson could pass away on any given day, and the uncertainty of the team after he's gone. Either way, it doesn't look like any legitimate, proven GM is even going to step foot on One Bills Drive. Ugh.

  12. In answer to your question . . . I never really did develop a soft spot in my heart for Losman.

It's been said that Losman embraced Buffalo. That's one way of looking at it. Another is that he wanted to be liked by the fans of his new team. He gained social rewards for having bought that house near Elmwood Avenue, and for his neighborhood cleanup efforts. Would he have done those things if, instead, he had expected indifference or even social penalties?

On another thread, someone mentioned that he drank a number of shots of some expensive liquor, at $150 a shot. Maybe he just liked the taste, but maybe he was trying to impress people. If the latter is the case, it would argue that he's insecure.

Compare that to a guy like Jim Kelly. He snubbed Buffalo for a couple years, opting to play for the Houston Gamblers instead. Once he finally came to Buffalo--not by choice, incidentally--he was welcomed like a conquering hero. Now that he's retired, and can live wherever he feels like, he's opted to stay in Buffalo. His charity--Hunter's Hope--was created because of his son's serious illness. Jim Kelly's relationship with the city of Buffalo strikes me as being more genuine and sincere than Losman's.

In answer to your original question, I think that as Bills fans, we haven't had much to cheer about since the day Jim Kelly and his teammates hung up their cleats. That's caused an element of wanting to believe the best about current Bills players. Losman gave people that. They could see his physical gifts, and imagine how good a quarterback he could be if some combination of "coaching" "experience" and other factors allowed his mind to catch up to his body. They saw his cleanup efforts and his house as evidence that Losman had embraced Buffalo, just like Jim Kelly did (eventually).

Unfortunately, the hope Losman gave people was a mirage, both on and (probably) off the field. He was not the Jim Kelly people wanted him to be.

Twenty years worth of relationship building goes a long way. Jim Kelly was a great QB, and it's an awesome foundation he's created for a terrible disease. But let's be real, here. The guy is and always has been an arrogant prick. That said, there's never been anything "fake" about him, and that's admirable. I'm not sure, and I doubt anyone on this board is sure, if J.P. did things because he wanted to win people over, or because he was sincere. He wasn't here long enough. I'd like to believe he was sincere. And I think Kelly has proven his sincerity, but he's had a heck of a lot more time to do it.

  13. How many ways can you say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

You're right. We've done so much better by signing guys out of Stanford and Tulane, and guys from other teams' practice squads, and other career backups. Why on earth would a team with our rich QB history want to buck the system and draft someone who's been successful at the college level? Idiocy!!!

  14. You watch these last two games?

When have the Bills had a "shiny new toy? Was that DJ? Mularkey? Williams?

Exactly!! What shiny new toy/quick fixes have been brought in since Wade Phillips left? Zero. Perry Fewell just coached a team to a one-score victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. And it took us 4 turnovers PLUS our regular possessions to get 16 points. Who thinks that is successful coaching? Who thinks letting Fred Jackson return kicks is good coaching? Come on.

  15. So signing on as the 3rd string emergency Qb on the worst team in the NFL qualifies as interest. if teams thought he was so good and could help they would find room. interest from teams like the Giants and Colts means someone asked for film of him from the UFL games, they looked at him doing the same stupid **** and said no thanks. Losman is a pea brained, bad attitude, doesn't get along with his teammates jerk. Always has been, always will be.

I agree that J.P. is best suited as a 3rd string QB, and does not have what it takes to lead a team anywhere but south of .500. But I don't think he's pea brained, bad attitude or that he doesn't get along with teammates, or a jerk.

He just doesn't have pocket presence. That doesn't make him stupid. And your assessment is more appropriate for Rob Johnson, not JP Losman. JP studied, he watched film, he practiced, and I never remember reading anything about him being any sort of locker room cancer. This is a guy who lost his job to an equally *****y QB, and handled it with professionalism.

He's not a good NFL QB. But it's not due to lack of effort or desire. And he did a lot more for the city and the fans than most of the other players past and present.
