Agreed.  I was thinking of an analogy to baseball earlier today.  Modern analytics have shown that teams actually score quite a few more runs by embracing a higher variance strategy of hitting more home runs and striking out more, which is counterintuitive to the classic strategy of having a couple power hitters and filling out the rest of your lineup with guys who will hit singles, bunt, steal bases, hit and run, etc.  Old hats still consider the latter to be the "right" way to play the game but statistics show it doesn't actually work.

Of course, even within that paradigm, there come plenty of game situations where it's best not to swing for the fences.  Runner on 2nd and nobody out in a tie game?  Yeah, move him over to 3rd.  Just like Josh probably shouldn't have thrown those two bombs down the sideline when we wanted to chew clock midway through the 4th quarter.

I agree, I am reluctant to make sweeping conclusions based on one series in the 4th quarter with a small lead.  I was hoping for a sustained drive that chewed clock in that situation.  Our guy went for kill shots.  How many times do we see a team run, run again, throw short of the sticks and punt?  The throw to Brown was put in a bad spot (misread leverage?) and Brown had difficulty tracking it over his right shoulder then his left.  Beasley looked like he was wrapped up before the ball got there and could not raise his arms to make the catch.  That's how they looked from section 228 anyhow.

Josh talks about McD preaching situational football to him and this is a classic instance where I bet that they had a conversation about it.

  2. Shaq Lawson, Jordan Phillips, Dean Marlowe, Bobby Hart, AJ Klein, Matt Barkley, Taiwan Jones, Cole Beasley and John Brown.  Maybe I am missing someone.  This seems like an unusual amount of players for a 13 and 3 team to have on their roster who were here, gone elsewhere for whatever reasons (mostly money probably) and then returned to the team.  I wonder what the locker room thinks of these guys.  I suspect the messages and benefit are three fold.  First, if you still have something to offer and were/are a good teammate, Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott won't hesitate bringing  a player back to the roster.  Second, the Bills like to say "come to Buffalo and be the best version of your self."  I think to varying degrees, this is true of all of these players.  Their experiences at their other stops in the league did not go so well, other than getting bigger paychecks in some cases.  Third, the guys on the team have to feel good when former teammates are welcomed back into their locker room.

John Brown seems like the most extreme case of this to me.  He struck me as genuinely hurt that he wasn't brought back in 2021 and he only managed 3 targets and 0 catches on the three other teams he was on that year..  He probably had the most extended time off of an NFL roster before returning and had to wonder if his career was over.  Also, both he and Beasley have to know that they are back on the team and getting NFL paychecks because Josh wanted them here.  That seems powerful and adds extra meaning to any plays they make.

    From March of 2021..........

But for Brown, he went Sirius XM Radio, stating he didn't see the move coming at all. He also stressed that he did wonder if Josh Allen played a part in his release.

"We didn't know nothing," Brown said. "You know, we weren't even given a heads up. But you know I'm a strong believer in God. I just had a feeling it was going to come to that time especially when the money dropped.  I dealt with a few injuries so I missed like five games and the team went five-and-oh without me. I don't know if they gave Josh Allen Input on it. I feel him being a big-time quarterback he should've had input. If he did have input I thought he would've wanted me to stay."

That TD catch he made on Sunday had to mean more to him than most any other he has ever made and he gave the ball to Denny Kellington.

Yes, the Bills were #1 at 50.22% on 3rd downs.  An absurd rate meaning they converted more than half of their 3rd downs to 1st downs regardless of distance.  They also were far and away #1 in the NFL at converting 3rd and 10+ at something even more absurd at like40% when the average team is like 10%.

This morning on WGR, Jeremy White was speaking of the hidden turnover margin that favors the Bills.  Yes, the Bills do seem to have some sloppy turnovers and are near even in turnover margin but if you consider punts as "turnovers lite," the Bills have a hidden, major turnover advantage and it's likely sourced in the 3rd and 10+ stat you cited.  If it's anything like the 40/10 numbers you gave, that's why there are a whole lot of punts that were never made.

It will be interesting what role Beasley has in the playoffs. Frustrating that he wasn't able to get called up again for one last game after only playing one serious in the Bengals game before it was called. Thought the NFL should have allowed a deviance from the protocols on that one. Felt like Beasley was going to get a lot of snaps and targets in the Bengals game to basically see what he and the offense could do BEFORE the playoffs. Now if we want to give him a high workload and "try it out" it will be in do or die game setting.

Or, if you are correct, the Bengals did not get a look at how Ken Dorsey preferred to use him and if they have the personnel matchups to cover him.  So the Bills can spring it on them without them being totally prepared.

  5. I think it says that for the most part, the Bills lacked a Beasley/Crowder option in their offense for the bulk of the season.  Those routes would tend to be at or near the sticks.  I do not know how it ended up or where to go to get it, but the Bills offense was likely at or near the top of the league in 3rd down conversion in most all situations.  Josh is not wired to throw short of the sticks on third down.

  6. Well I know something of this.  Last game vs. the 'Phins went to the ECC lots where I would normally park near their football field.  On this day they were filled earlier than normal so I had to park on the southside of the campus.  After the game I ran into a line of 10 or so Uber drivers lined up near where I parked.  It's a fairly easy exit from those lots with a traffic light controlled by an Erie County Sheriff Deputy that allows entry onto Route 20 (Southwestern Drive) so it makes sense to have a pickup location there.  I do not know how many other such locations there might be but this seemed like a well thought out one.

  7. A few years ago we had a stray cat hanging around our back porch.  Very friendly and wanted a home and to belong somewhere.  I started calling him Barkley after our BB QB2 at the time and current practice squad QB.  It was right around the time of the Renegade Matt Barkley performance in Pittsburgh.  Barkley is a way cooler name for a dog.

Taron kind of turned his body when taking on the block which put him in a bad position.

The Hendrickson is terrible and a blatant attempt for a leg whip.  I’m surprised no one called him on it.  Dirty play

It's not the block, which was excellent, but how he dipped his head at the end to make contact with the back of Taron's helmet.  Intentionally went out of his way to make that contact, which is illegal whether they are on their feet or on the ground, I would think.  It's much like hits on the QB that are legal but become a penalty when the defender tries to stuff the QB by landing on him with bull body weight which can separate a shoulder or crack ribs.

  9. Must be something that makes having a great sense of humor go well with being a journeyman QB.  Case is right there with Fits with the self deprecating jokes.  The "fan" at training camp wanting autographs, the Bills store employee trying to sell the Keenum jersey and now the "nothing but a jockstrap on at walkthrough."  Great humor~superior intelligence~emotionally secure~lower ego = can play in the NFL for a long time.

  10. It is the culture of the game.  The best ability is availability, right?  Tua is giving everything he he has to prove he's worthy of a second contract and a franchise keeper.  He has heard all the criticisms about his lack of physical tools and the stories of the owner trying to replace him.  I think he is fighting an early end to his NFL career so he is not going to willingly succumb to any obstacle.  The back injury loophole was his go to story to keep playing.  He knows that he can't show any signs of weakness.  These 3 concussions were not abnormal football plays.  The hip fracture was not an abnormal play either.  He is fighting the perception that he isn't physically suited to be an NFL QB.  Often perception is reality.

If that’s the case then Hurts is beating out both of them. The fact is Hurts is the front runner and has been for awhile. He is the media darling right now and they decide the winner so unless something odd happens he is winning the  MVP.

Also to the person called the Dallas game a BIG game. It really isn’t the Eagles have the East all wrapped up. The only chance Dallas has is if they win out and the Eagles lose out.. heck if the eagles win 2 of the last 3 they have a first round by.. Guaranteed.. (and assuming everyone else wins out is the only way they lose the 1 seed going 1 and 2 )

I took "big" in the sense of MVP narrative.  If Minshew plays an effective game and the Eagles win comfortably over one of the toughest opponents on their schedule, one might assume that it might diminish the Hurts' MVP scenario.  I am not sure I buy that reasoning but I could see some thinking that way.

I'm personally not a fan, but whatever.  Squish the Fish!

I agree with you and do not like the red on red look, much like cartoon characters in red long johns.  But with lake effect snow and 15-30 mph wind, it's less red on red and more red on white which does look much better, imo.

  13. Started his throw, paused it and then pulled the trigger.  Throw was late and somewhat under powered (compared to what Josh needed to have on it.)  This allowed Peterson to undercut the route.  A similar hitch was in the motion on the goal line throw to McKenzie that ended up skipping to him.  If he needs to make a power throw, that hitch is a power sapper.  If he's making a touch throw, that hitch/reload is not such a big deal.

So, I say the decision was ok initially but the hitch in the motion (based on a LB flashing through the throwing window?) messed with the timing and made it a bad throw.

  14. My first name is Jeff.  Growing up my mom often called me Jesse.  I had a favorite uncle who was a WWII vet that fought in Italy.  He handled mules that carried ammunition packs to the frontlines.  He died in 2009 with some shrapnel still in his body that surgeons decided not to remove.  He was farmed out as a boy, spent time in the CCC during the Depression and spent most of his working career as carpenter.  For some reason he took Jesse and started calling me Jessefeffer.  I figured he earned the right to call me anything he wanted and every time that I see it, I think of him.  Thanks OP for giving me a reason post about him!

Every August they have a $10 ($13 with fees) fire sale on tickets for all games. Obviously you need to decide far in advance which game you're going to but you save a lot.

They should really be aggressive with that during the Bills bye week.  Good weather, discounted prices and big MAC contest, they could boost attendance to rarely seen levels.

Admit it, you're gonna be jonesing to tailgate and root for a local football team this weekend. The solution is in Amherst NY Saturday at 1pm.

UB hosts Toledo in a battle between first place teams in the east and west conferences of the MAC. Buffalo has won 4 in a row and have the inside track to the MAC championship.

Toledo is also undefeated in conference play and is likely heading to the MACC as well.

Tickets are $32 inc fees. Parking is free. There's plenty of room to tailgate, or if you prefer, they have a party plaza set up with live music and food trucks. The forecast Saturday is sunny and mid-60s.

And is all that wasn't enough, UB is wearing their 1990 throwbacks this game. #UBHornsUp

I went to see them play Miami of Ohio a few weeks ago.  I was surprised at the $32 ticket price given my past experience and taking my entire family would have been a  no go.  The stadium was only half filled in the lower level on the visitor's side and the upper decks and end zone were much less filled.  On the other hand, the weather is supposed to be in the mid 60's and sunny which is near perfect.
