Maybe he’s been working out with Josh, according to Poyer on the Tyreek Hill podcast Allen is currently 260 LBs

People use the 237 number that Josh had at the combine but we all know that can't be true anymore.  I described him as probably a bucket of wings shy of 250 now but 260?  Maybe that's when fully padded.

So you don't want Josh to try and make a throw in tight quarters after he decides to run it, right? Because that's what causes Josh to put himself at risk, the fact he tried to get the ball to Davis. If he just commits to the run and protects himself as a runner he's less likely to get hurt in that situation. And this is from 2020, right? I think Josh has already done a better job of getting down on these type of plays to live another day.

I do think there will be less running this year, with the expectation that Josh will dump the ball off to one of our overpopulated short to mid range targets. I think we're really going to use the width of the field this year, hopefully it will work.

The pass wasn't really designed as there were OL downfield which drew the flag.  I think Josh did that to avoid a loss.  Bosa had 6 tackles for loss that game which included 3 sacks.  This particular type of play has the potential to be misread and thus expose Josh to having to take on a big defender with little time or space to react.  It could have been a much worse outcome.  I think Barkley came in for just the next play.

  3. There has been much discussion about Josh running less but there seems to be little consensus about which runs need to eliminated.  I really hated the zone read and the one I linked because Josh misread Bosa and did not react well to him.  He tried wide, then cutback and then a stiff arm but all failed and he was close to a season ending lower leg injury much like Dak Prescott suffered earlier that season.  After he kept the ball there was little time or space to make a good play and when he realized he was trapped, he had no way to protect himself.

I'd be interested on the metrics for JA zone reads.  I remember one very good one in 2019 at Miami where he ran for like 35 yards as the DE was totally fooled.   But, this play I linked in the OP vs. the Chargers is the only one I remember where a season ending injury was in the mix.  Maybe, in their totality, they are the least successful and most risky.  Josh on an island with Bosa in his face who then steer wrestles him to the turf is as bad as it has gotten, imo.

  4. We all want Josh protected better and sometimes he needs to be protected from himself.  Imo, of all the types of runs he makes, this is the most risky.  Remove this from the playbook, please. A zone read that he pulls from Moss with Joey Bosa standing there staring Josh down expecting him to keep it.  Wrapped around his waist like a little brother, Bosa manages to pull and spin Josh down while crushing on the back of his legs.  On QB power runs, draws, sneaks and scrambles Josh can see the defenders with time to react and can usually protect himself well.  This zone misread made my heart rate went go through the roof as I thought he'd suffered a lower leg injury much like Dak did.  I can't think of one worse than this.  Unblocked Joey Bosa standing there waiting for him with no time to react.  They should make this go away.  I think I am good with the rest.

  5. Ok here is an off the wall idea.  There were occasions where some younger, big city types came to work at my company (which was near Jamestown) for an extended internship.  They were able to get some nice rental deals at the Chautauqua Institution during the offseason which starts at the end of August.  Your timing looks right to me and there is not much demand for housing there during the months you are speaking.  It's a good deal for the homeowners because they have little need for offseason use and their property taxes must be huge there.  The Erie and Buffalo airports are each close to an hour away and the approach and egress to/from High Mark Stadium is a breeze.  According to Greg Tompsett of Cover1, Josh Allen just closed on a house on the grounds which is odd to me but it's tough to know what his intent would be.  The National Comedy Center in Jamestown is worth a trip regardless of where you choose to locate.

  6. The Bills lack dynamic, YAC playmakers.  They do not generate many missed tackles in the passing game. Not many instances of physically beating defenders once they have the ball in their hands, either with speed or power.  I think that's what Chris Simms is saying.  They do run great routes and make great plays on the ball, especially near the sidelines.  So the Bills pass catchers get the yards that their route and Josh's arm earned them and not much more.

Some QBs with dink and dunk mindsets could not sustain an offense without the YAC element built in.  Some do not even attempt to make intermediate throws outside the numbers.   Josh throws to all areas of the field and when he puts the ball on his targets in those contested spaces, securing the ball and keeping their feet inbounds or protecting themselves is job#1.

On a related note, the whole lack of YAC conversation related to Josh's offseason work with Palmer seemed somewhat of a mystery to me.  I rarely had the thought that Josh put the ball in bad places to get more yards.  I mostly saw it as a consequence of the types of receivers he has and the places on the field they attack.

I find it interesting that Athletes do so much community work.

Is there another profession where you have to constantly prove you're part of that community? and that you're a good person?

I think the stark reality is that most star athletes would acknowledge that they did not get where they are without the support of family, coaches and, in some cases, teammates.  If you really feel that way you should want to actively give back.  We all should feel that way as we are all blessed in some way by someone.  I hope we helped Dawson to win the TEU fund raising contest.

No apology necessary. You’re right about going to games there, I won’t go in September or even October. I have not been there since they added the roof don’t know if that helps.

I searched the internet for September game photos and most of the seating seems shaded except lower bowl visitors side.  The playing field is not shaded much at 1 PM.  The fact the Dolphins keep the opposing team in the sun while not on playing the field should be a big help to them but the Bills still manage to beat them up.

The massive gap at the line of scrimmage is perplexing. Like there’s an entire yard of space between the OL and DL. Seems QB sneaks would work all the time

Sort of a gimme on shortage football.  I guess with 3 downs instead of 4 they're saying a 3rd and 1 is the competitive equivalent of "close enough."

  10. Baldy breaks down Josh's 8 game history vs, the 'Phins.

A little fun as we enter the Bills summer doldrums.  On a side note, I used some airline credit to book flights to Miami on 9/23 for me and my son who will almost be a teen by then.  I posted in the Tailgate forum but there is not much traffic there now and I want some advice about where to book our stay that will be near the midst of Bills Mafia for the pregame buildup.  Otherwise I'd stay near the airport and hope for the best.  You could private message to me if you feel like sharing some wisdom from previous experiences.

An overrated “need” by Bills fans… Only way I see Austin making the team is if they cut Kumerow for him.

They need someone with reliable hands and decision making like Hyde but who can be a threat to improve the the field position on a semi regular basis.  Hyde is too valuable at safety to have him taking kick return hits.  An improvement there is easier talk about than find, imo.  That one klutzy KOR by McKenzie vs. the Colts where he stumbled, fell and fumbled without being touched seemed to spook McDermott.  I think the stumble happened due to the crown of the field as Isaiah suddenly started heading "uphill."  That was my thought at the time.

Second, I had some airline credit to use so I booked a flight to Miami on 9/23 and will fly back on 9/26.  I will take my almost teenage son with me (don't tell anyone--he will miss a half and whole day of school on Friday/Monday) and hope to have a great time with Bills Mafia in enemy territory.  Wondering about where to stay as a strategic home base close to where the Mafia will be congregating, otherwise I was thinking of staying close to the airport.  Don't plan on a car rental, maybe an Uber or hitch a ride to the game.  Maybe there are some well thought strategies to arrange some mass transportation to Hard Rock.

  13. The position of the wrist at the moment a baseball is released puts much more strain on the elbow than what a football does.  Other pitches made to create different spin and cause additional movement, are often more the cause of elbow problems.  QBs would be more likely to suffer injuries to their wrist and shoulder than to their elbow but that burden is more likely the result of cumulative throws made during overly aggressive training than during a game, imo.  Being tackled by a 300+ lb defender with the elbow or shoulder first to contact the ground is the biggest threat to a QB's arm joints (think Josh's A/C sprain--non throwing side--suffered vs. Raiders.)  This was a landing with full body weight cheapshot, imo, that was not called.

  14. Without wanting to bother reading their content, I wonder if this is an example of recency bias regarding the :13 debacle or maybe an assessment of the last season in general.  All the wins by double digits (talent gets the credit) and most of the losses by one score or less (head coaches blamed for game management.)   The other odd thing about last year was how good Tyler Bass was but never got called on to make the difference with a game deciding kick.

I do not sense that 2021 was Sean's best year navigating through the schedule with in-game decision making.  Not necessarily consistently bad but consistently less than ideal outcomes.  Ex. Josh Allen on a QB sneak vs. the Titans?  Should be money.

Well, there hasn't been a "home field advantage" in the NFL for several years now, and not just because of COVID.

That whole thing about crowd noise on the road is proving to be a bit of a myth, at least lately.

I think this is tied most closely to the elimination of the blackout rule.  More fans watching their teams on television means less demand for seats = more empty seats and/or more filled by fans of the visiting team.  This all means a less hostile venue for the road team.

I still think it has to do with Allen becoming too hyped at home, even though he plays music to calm himself down, etc...

My basis for thinking this is because in 2020 when there were no fans, the splits were nearly identical, home and away, although he was still slightly better on the road.  However, once the fans came back, again he was significantly better on the road, just as he was the prior year...which is pretty clear evidence that he either tries to do too much at home, is too pumped up to try and wow the home fans or there is something else going on. His rookie year he was pretty much even...mostly bad stat wise in both places.

Don't get me wrong, I love the fact he lives for going into other teams houses, taking their lunch money and then laughing in their faces as they cry for Mommy, but it would be nice to see him get a little closer to his road performances at home on balance...

Also...the "more" primetime the game, the better he plays...improving each timeslot from early to afternoon to night.

Weather, weather, weather.  The worst weather he plays in are home games.  Usually at least two every year.  I am speaking mostly of wind which kills many portions of a passing game.  Yes, he can still function better than the opposition QB, but his passing stats take a dive.

That's also not really true. If you look at his draft results, he hit on a ton of guys that had NFL careers. Not all of them got resigned here and most didn't turn into superstars, but they didn't bust out of the league either. What hindered his legacy is the QB position, as is the death knell for most GMs. I'd be very interested to know who said what in the decision to pass on Mahomes and Watson and whose call it was ultimately.

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/buf/draft.htm

Why would the Pegulas let their lame duck GM take the next shot at a franchise QB?  That was clearly going to be the next GM's primary mission.  That's the way I saw it anyways.  The Bills almost screwed that up by making the playoffs meaning Beane needed two trades to get to #7 and draft Josh.

  18. I would not want to write the NFL story on any of these three.  AJE is very quick off the ball and good with his hands.  Groot has many great traits and is very inexperienced.  He has lots of room to grow yet still made an impact in his rookie year.  I'm not as sure about Basham's game, I just haven't seen much of it yet.  Calling any of them a bust at this point is much like spiking the ball at the 25.  The fact that the Bills let Addison, Obada and Hughes go tells me they think Epenesa, Groot and Boogie are ready to deliver more.  It will be a big year in the careers of all 3.
