Good move for the Steelers. Wilson just has to be not horrible and they are a playoff team. For 1.2 mil, that’s a good bet

I hadn't seen the money. If I'm the Steelers, desperately in need of a QB and picking in the high 20s, why wouldn't you take a flier on Rus for that money? If he bounces back, great! If he doesn't you are no worse off than when you began.

Hoping they didnt just push stuff down the road with him.

If it was, we would be hearing "restructure"

If we are taking the Miller model, I would suspect that it's a base salary reduction with a potential to be even more money if he returns to 2021 form.

    Which...if he's getting 550 yards and 8 TD, I am ok with.

Yeah I honestly wouldn't want to give up a premium pick (nor do I think the Steelers can reasonably request one, since he's in the last year of his deal, wants out, and is coming off two lackluster seasons), and I wouldn't want it to preclude us from drafting a WR early.

If we could trade a 5th (we have three of them) for him AND still draft a WR in round 1 or 2? Sign me up all day, every day.

The nice guys at Cover 1 dug into his stats, and his drop rate has been lower than people made it out to be and while I thought he was a slot guy from his build he has played mostly outside. $7-10M on a one year rental (depending on whether Pitt pays the roster bonus) for a productive outside receiver is a steal compared to the money the current market for a productive outside WR. If Pitt goes for a 5th (or two) I'd pull the trigger

His cap hit is 15 mil. Not sure what acquiring team takes on ?

His base salary is 7 mil so I believe that could be converted to a bonus

Pitt would eat the signing bonus, could possibly eat the roster bonus. $7 M for a vet is a bargain, but I'm kind of meh on him.

  5. So a shorter and lighter Shakir? I'd rather see if Shakir can play outside.

Surprisingly, he isn't a slot guy

He is very good and has suffered from an awful OC and awful QB.

He is only 27 years old, and would fit well in our offense.

Assuming the compensation required is not significant -- something like a day 3 pick seems fine -- then I WOULD do it. The only thing that gives me pause is that 2024 is the last year of his deal, and he'd need to be re-signed.

Drafting a rookie in round 1 or 2 probably makes more sense.

I'm ehhh on it. I don't like going into the draft with such a MUST FILL mentality, but I am not sure if he is worth the compensation.

If the Bills pull the trigger for a 4th or 5th I won't hate it, but I'd still want to draft a WR high.

  6. I mean, I don't want to keep banging the "national media is trash" drum while I eat it up but...

Man, I don't think they did an in depth dive. Or even more than a cursory skim. I get that there are 31 other teams but the day after our Wednesday purge Florio and Simms seemed shocked at how much the Bills had been over and were wondering how the Bills were going to field a team...while we all knew that shaking $30-40 M more cap space free can be done with two extensions and two restructures.

  7. Do you think he'll take the vet minimum? Because if not, hard pass.

Seriously, James Cook just had a year where he was sixth in the league in yards from scrimmage. Not, "for a RB", for the entire league. SIXTH.

I am not denying a need for a power running back, but you can get a fresh set of legs to pound the ball easily in the later rounds of the draft or dirt cheap in free agency.

Don't love the signing to be honest, especially when you consider the FA pool.... There are gonna be some decent safeties going for little money because of how deep it is.

I will not be shocked if Beane signs two more. From what I am seeing, this is an incentive laden, low guaranteed money deal. There are worse things that a cheap vet set to fight for a roster spot while bringing in other journeymen and a mid round pick or two

  9. Agreed. Chin is a definite one I have been keeping an eye on. Rapp's return piques interest, but considering that I have not seen the contract details yet I do not think Beane put large amounts of guaranteed money.

For me, safety is the kind of position where it gets dropped out of perceived importance. Boundary (and increasingly slot) CBs draw the lion's share of cap space, and it seems like around the league the safety group is what gets devalued right up until the moment that you have a subpar group and suddenly fans are wondering how those pricey cornerbacks aren't stopping big plays down the field anymore.

It works to the Bills advantage, and with the glut it's a perfect year to pick up a few journeymen while grooming mid round picks for the future.

The Bills are FINALLY playing comp pick Bingo.

Between yesterday's cuts, the recent collecting of more draft picks, and now the embracing of the comp pick collection process...it sure looks like Beane is finally doing what a lot here wanted: Going with a youth movement, taking his salary cap medicine, and getting the Bills into much better shape financially and age-wise going forward.

As for Fatukasi. Would be a good signing, I think. Not a world beater, but you don't need (and can't afford) 53 world beaters. He's a capable player, and any time you can get a capable player in the trenches and not have it hurt the compensatory pick formula, and can fill a roster hole before free agency's first wave really begins, its a win.

If we have a NT who can take on 2-3 blockers and leave Oliver 1-1 vs a guard, then Oliver CAN be a world beater

I mean, would be nice but I'd figure him to be way over our price point for the position.

Completely agree. I'd want him, but he's going to command top end money.

However, if he draws the market away it's an asset to the Bills

They’re not gonna draft 11 players he’s going to use some of those pics to trade up into higher rounds

Even with the players that we lost yesterday we wouldn’t be able to give a jersey to 11 new guys in the draft. There is too much talent on this team still

Completely agree. I should have phrased it better: with 11 picks, I fully expect to have at least 5 in the first four rounds or to dramatically move up from the back to the top of a few of them. Rookies will have a far better chance of cracking the roster than in previous years.

Trying to use free agency to build your team hardly ever works out. I think Brandon is doing it right

Get some baseline guys in free agency to fill holes players that have been in the system as starters on your draft picks

He keeps us compliant and allows us to have a little bit of money every year to continue to replenish baseline guys

To be fair, he's had some luck at getting above average play out of journeymen, but the team has been juggling that for a while trying to keep a Super Bowl window open.

I'll never rule out the Bills having a shot so long as they have Josh Allen but this is the most picks we've had going into a draft in...a while. 11, at the moment I think. I expect Beane to trade up a bit, but that should give us more then we've been used to.

Wait till you see the contracts that these guys get

Yes, we will have some money we will not have enough money to make those kinds of splashes. We’re trying to get our salary cap situation straightened out.

Exactly. As if we did not learn our lesson from Von.

If there has been one takeaway I've gotten from the offseason is that the Bills aren't in position for a teardown, but we can take our medicine.

Yesterday...yesterday was rough. Poyer and Tre were big parts of the culture change at the start of McDermott's tenure and Morse was a big part of the push into Allen's growth into what he is now.

I'm not saying the Bills are going to give up all hope of a championship, but now is the time to rebuild a young core and you don't do that chasing top tier free agents. I think the Bills can still scrounge up extensions, cuts and an Allen restructure to get over the cap and make a few day 2-3 pickups to round out weaknesses before the draft, but that's where we are going to build for long term success.

  15. It's a brutal pruning. I can't say I think the choices are illogical but it was all of "break glass in case of emergency" options all at once.

And then Beane got Miller to take a pay cut, void yeared Douglas (I think)

  16. I came on to be upset about a Miller restructure and instead realized that Beane got him to take a pay cut.

    Sweet Jesus.

Today was brutal but the Bills are back in the black and there are still more levers to pull.

What's the story with this guy?  Just saw that he played offensive snaps in 15 regular season games and both postseason games but never more than 37% of them.  Why was there a rotation at Guard?  I've never heard of that.

It's common to spell out players if they need a rest. Also for use in Jumbo packages.

  18. Just now, HomeTeam said:

But why would they move on from them?

The answer is obvious: the Russ' contact post cut means they are getting hammered on the cap. Wilson alone will be $35 M this year and $50 M next, simply to not have him on the team anymore. Combined with not having a QB they have a massive millstone around their necks until 2026. A prudent thing to do would be to make cap room and ship off vets with expiring contracts for draft picks.

The problem with the Bills moving on it is that these players, while good, aren't a perfect fit for our needs and cap situation. Jeudy, while a great player, is more of the role that the Bills have for Shakir. Sutton has a $12 M base salary for the next two years that the Bills would be on the hook for.

I'd take the DE or WR who has a better chance of being blue-chip. We have very few of those players and need more. But if Beane decides the DE has a brighter future and can be elite, not just 8-10 sacks, but elite, take him. But make damn sure you get a good receiver soon after.

agree that WR is biggest need. We can get by for a year with Von and Groot and some journeymen. I don't think you can say the same for WR2

I hear you. But I think many smart people think Mitchell will be a number 1 guy and he should be available close to where we pick.

We'll see soon enough. If we got this DE, I wouldn't hate it — if we get a speed merchant later who's a bona fide number 2.

I'm not saying they are wrong. I would be happy if Beane takes him at 28 (or moves up into the 20s somehow)

In the same token, if 28 rolls around and Mitchell and Franklin and McConkey and Worthy and Devontez Walker and Legette and Coleman are all there, and there is a very clear answer to "who replaces Von Miller?" or "who anchors our secondary for the next five years?" I can see waiting until round 2.

well, most of us want a WR but I wouldn't hate getting a guy with 23.3 sacks in the last 2 years and a player some call the most polished edge rusher in the draft.

Now, if we did that, I would expect a trade up, again, for a guy like Legette or someone comparable... We'd lose a lot of draft capital in 2 trade-ups... but is getting the best pass rusher and an explosive receiver worth it? I've seen worse drafts.

    Here's the thing for me:

Obviously, I want a WR who could take over for Diggs in a year or two and this seems to be the draft to do it.

But maybe Beane is looking at his board and says "Thomas Jr. is the last WR1, the rest are all complementary pieces. If he's gone before I can even get close and an edge rusher is there for the taking I can get a complementary piece almost anywhere in 2nd or using my bevy of picks to get into the top of round 3"

I couldn't be mad at that.
