That's a crazy 2025 dead cap hit.  Wouldn't it make more sense to restructure or extend him?

I wouldn’t deal Bates and there’s no way I’m paying Miller the $6.5 that’s due in March.

Whoever did this is very much looking at numbers and not the team.

Why would we deal Bates when we could paycut or release Morse who is older? Why would you restructure anything on Miller when his salary is ignored and guarantees are voided if suspended? Why on earth would we add 3 void years onto poyer when he's a legit cut candidate?

    Yep.

At the end of the day, they'll wind up with enough for Beane to re-sign a couple players (Jones and Epenesa?) and make one moderately splashy FA move (like Connor McGovern last year) and then a bunch of ho-hum 1-year deals and contributors. As it should be.

Every year we hear how "we'll be shopping the bargain bin this year", and then every year the Bills sign a decent collection of free agents that pleasantly surprises me. Notably, as you said, NOT usually big ticket signings from the first wave of free agency.

They then also typically sign a decent player a month or two later once said player realizes he's not going to get the money he's seeking (Leonard Floyd, I'm looking at you).

This year, I'd expect something like a safety, a couple DL, a running back, a backup QB, and a WR.

I mean we say that like a bad thing.

Realistically, how often do you look at a player contract 3-4 years later and go "oh boy THAT was worth it!"

I think the best one in recent memory for the Bills (fortunately) was Josh Allen's. A lot of the time players can't play up to expectations because it was nearly statistically impossible to play up to that level.

Hyde and Poyer were journeymen when the came here and turned into one of the best safety tandems in the league. Morse and Beasley weren't bank breakers. Taron Johnson, Dawkins, Milano and Ed Oliver all have played up to or exceeded their contracts so far. I would include Tre White as well, if not for the injuries.

@spotrac has the #Bills at $287.9 million in Top 51 player contracts, putting them at an estimated $32.5 million over the new salary cap limit of $255.4.

Some work for Brandon Beane to do - as we’ve been discussing - but not as bleak a picture as a few weeks ago.

I mean, I am looking over some of the recommended cuts and it's incredibly east to shed $49M

Good news for the Bills, as others have already stated.

Two things to remember once free agency starts:

One: Bear this in mind when you start seeing the deals that get handed out in free agency. Bigger cap means bigger contracts handed out. Try not to die of sticker shock.

Two: When it comes to free agency in general, always remember that the first ones to announce the deals are typically the players' agents, who word the announcements in a way that makes the deal sound as favorable as possible for their client. The devil is ALWAYS in the details, and you should ALWAYS wait until the specifics like guaranteed money, voidable years, and roster bonuses come out, because they tell the real story.

    Very much.

Also, the Bills were never going to be legal tampering and Day 1 bidders. More to the point, that's not how I personally view as the path to long term success. Our biggest free agent signing that wasn't a retention contract is Von Miller, and ask around here to see how popular that is.

Let's not forget how the Bills slowly dragged themselves to playoff contention before Josh got here: journeymen FA to fill positions of need, draft BPA and do your best to retain your successes. Sure, we still needed a QB but that was the core that took the Bills as far as the did in 2020 and 2021.

This is massive news. The salary cap is $13 million higher than anticipated. This changes everything about our free agency possibilities.

I mean, I won't say "everything". But that amount is the difference of renegotiating Diggs or not

I am quoting myself, quoting @DrDawkinstein quoting an early Cover 1 installment but here are some very basic moves that I would say 99% of this board would agree with:

    Quote

    No Brainers - Cap Saved

    Restructure Josh - $23M

Release or paycut Hines - $2-5M

    Release Harty - $4M

    Extend Dawkins - $7M

    Extend Douglas - $6M

    Extend Johnson - $5M

    Release Siran Neal - $3M

    Release Sam Martin - $1M

That puts the Bills at $9-12 million over the cap without doing the classic "convert base salary to signing bonus" outside of Josh Allen (who is worth the money and we want here a long time). I honestly will be surprised if anyone here objects to these moves.

After that...it gets harder, but I am no longer worried about having to gut the roster or make extreme long term restructures to field a competitive team.

With that money, I can very much see the Bills swapping Poyer for a new pair of journeyman safeties and picking up 1-2 free agents on defense and then backfilling BPA defense and WR2 in the draft.

Should probably re-sign AJ and let him start on the right side, Groot on the left side and Von rotating in for passing downs with all $120M of his albatross contract.  Re-sign Shaq for the rotation.

I like re-signing Daquan and adding some cheaper FAs and Day 2 DT

Is Hyde gone for sure? The QB role of him an Poyer in the back of the D will be hard to replace immediately. We should draft a mid-round S to learn from him.

No, but there are a few signs he wouldn't be coming back.

For one, his contract is over. With our cap situation, throwing money at a skill position player in his mid-30s is typically not a great investment.

Two, there are legitimate reasons to think that he's going to retire. His wife put out a message on social media thanking Bills mafia right around the end of the season. He took a bad injury that might seriously affect his long term health back in 2022, and he took a neck stinger at the end of the year that had a lot of fans holding his breath. I would not blame him in the slightest for setting a hard line in the sand on what he thinks is worth playing for and retiring for his health if he doesn't see it.

I'm surprised to see, according to one site, Samuel's projected numbers so low:

Projected Contract: 2 years, $15.0 million, $7.5 APY, $9.0M GTD

I have no idea if it's accurate but it just may be affordable by the Bills if it's backloaded.

Spotrac has it at $11.5 M AAV, but again that's not impossible to swing if backloaded to 2026

  9. Well thanks for reminding us how much we loved it at the time. I guess?

I'm not going to pretend that the last two years were not disappointing but I find it useful to look at when and where the dropoff happened. Even in his best year Knox didn't put up crazy yards but was a massive RedZone threat

I don't think it's a coincidence that along with the personal stuff and injuries going from 9 TDs to massive dropoff conincided with Daboll leaving and an uptick in RedZone a few weeks after he returned with Brady calling plays.

Sign Daquan and then add to the DL and S rooms in free agency.  Address remaining needs in the draft.

    Exactly my plan.

I think we can possibly get Daquan before he hits the market and then pick up a rotational DE and at least one S. I am also not against cutting Poyer and picking up two S's (and then drafting one in 3rd or 4th round)

I do find Grossi legitimately clever in his writing. He definitely understands fanhood well. Though if you want to see suffering that matches ours, the Brandon Perna experience with the Broncos is worth a watch.

  12. I disagree with the idea of "Diggs is out the door" but seriously, if the plan for free agency is "I want to have zero slot where we'd have to force a rookie into so we take BPA" I don't hate it. My issue is what we'd have to give up. I wouldn't shell out anything higher than a 4th.

I hope it does well too, and it seems wild to me that spring football has always had such a tough time catching on.

Given how popular the sport is, you'd think most other football fans would want to see it succeed as well.

I wonder if the reason they fail is partially due to targeting large markets that have a million better things to do, when they might have more success by giving smaller markets without pro football their own team.

I feel like these leagues struggle to establish any dedicated following, but placing teams in smaller, more loyal markets may help build a solid foundation. The XFL saw this with the St Loius Battlehawks, and that's what the Spring Leagues should look to replicate.

For me part of it was that it was so dang hard to watch. Even when Philly had an arena football it was relegated to local broadcast.

One advantage this time around is that it's on major networks on national broadcast.

Agree - I think finding someone who is as good as Gabe (after some experience) can be done as late as 3rd, but if they want a big outside receiver who has really great speed too, that has to come in first - if they can even get that there.

I honestly think that last year showed that we need an upgrade from Gabe (and stat!) and with the Brinks truck that most WR2s on the market are projected at I really think the Draft is the only place to look at the moment.

This is not a bad idea, probably would net the Bills’ the Panther’s top of fourth pick, if Carolina would do it.

It would heavily depend on the lay of the board, but I can absolutely see Carolina getting desperate.

If not, at this point I am confident that the Bills can pick up an immediate starting #2 in the back end of the 1st, start of the 2nd. The question is whether they can get someone to groom as a Diggs successor or if they want someone to pair.

Yeah, the more I've been diving into these guys - the more I'm feeling like we can probably sit pat at 28. I've got 4 guys after the Big 3 go i'd be thrilled with. I wouldn't worry about it unless that 6th one comes off multiple picks ahead of us.

Personally, I would not rule out trading back to 33 if we can fleece the panthers and there are 3-4 guys Beane still likes. But if Franklin is there I would have a hard time saying no.

    1. Marvin Harrison Jr.

    2. Rome Odunze

    3. Malik Nabers

    4. Brian Thomas Jr.

    5. Ladd McConkey

    6. Keon Coleman

    7. Xavier Worthy

    8. Adonai Mitchell

    9. Malachi Corley

    10. Xavier Legette

Troy Franklin doesn't even make his Top 10 list. Wild. McConkey is way too high for his size and (lack of) speed. Legette is too low IMO.

Hey, if that means he's there at 28 or the top of the 2nd, I will not complain
