This is totally a guess, but with 3 year/$24M $15M guaranteed, I think we'll find that breaks down to something like a $12M signing bonus with a void year ($3M/yr), vet min salary for >6 years of $1.2M, $0.8M of per-game roster bonuses so $5M cap hit.  2025, $3M salary for a $6M cap hit.  2026, $7M salary so $10M cap hit, but no new money guaranteed.  If he's making good here at age 30, Bills will try to extend him.  $2M of the reported $24M would be incentives for stuff like >1000 yd season, >80 receptions, pro bowl, all-pro, and so forth.

So my guestimater would break it down as:

    2022: $5M cap hit

    2023: $6M cap hit

    2024: $10M cap hit

2025: FA, $3M void year to extend signing bonus

If I'm right, that's a dang good deal.

That's along what I was thinking. There might be just enough money in the bannana stand to get a discount S starter and then we are free for BPA

I like the signing and value.

Maybe it's a "grass is always greener" mindset, but how is Gabe Davis worth 1.5x Samuel or Hollywood Brown in the open market?  I understand  that he's younger, but his health has always been an issue.  What am I missing?  He had one historic game several years ago, but otherwise has been very pedestrian.  He never had a 1,000 yard season, never had 50 receptions... despite being in a pass heavy offense with a great QB, and 3 different OCs had a desire/need to get him more involved.

No, you're not alone with that thought.

I'm less amazed that Gabe got bank because teams overpay for WR2 all the time. What HAS surprised me is that quality #2 guys are signing for far less than I expected on the market. Spotrac had him at $11.5M AAV and the Bills got him for $8 M a year (with potential void years) and Marquise Brown for $7 M

I think the Bills made the more financially sound move.

A true burner? Faster then the 4.31 Samuel runs?

OK fair enough: More dedicated X receiver. If the team thinks that he can do that full time great, but considering the Kyle Shanahan inspired wrinkles that he ran, the comparison is closer to Deebo Samuel than a traditional #2 boundary WR.

That said, he looks about 50/50 and has the speed to take off the top of the defense so that's not an impossibility.

Haha fair. The overall point I am going for is that if the Bills are smart (and so far what I've seen from Beane and Brady has reasonably been so) is that the Bills aren't going to be a "stop X and you stop the offense"

We were that at stretches last year. If teams could shut down Diggs (and a lot made sure they did) it could be an absolute grind. Now, Shakir and Kincaid came along down the stretch and Cook became a revelation. With Samuel, and then a 2nd-3rd round burner then I really think Beane will have the luxury of BPA

People need to watch more of Samuel because he does get behind the defense for big plays on occasion. He's definitely more than a slot guy.

I think his ability to make things happen after the catch has led to him being targeted more quickly which in turn has kept his YPC low, but the ability to make plays downfield is there.

He seems like a rich man's Shakir who is a little bit more experienced playing boundary WR, and has some juice being used out of the backfield.

After sleeping on it, I am fine with that. If there was one thing I held up as why I liked Brady better than Dorsey it's that Brady put an emphasis on scheming against the opponent each week. Against the Cowboys (who had no run defense) and the second Chiefs game (depleted defense, needed as much TOP as possible) he made excellent use of heavy sets. He attacked bad secondaries when he saw them.

Last offseason I gushed about the possibilities of using a 2 TE set (Knox was the disappointment, not Kincaid) but now I'm seeing the advantage with 3 and 4 WR sets. Trot out Diggs, Shakir, Samuel, Kincaid and Cook.

Standard 3WR: already solid and versatile route options

    4 "WR" using Kincaid

    Bunch formation

Put Samuel in the backfield with Cook: There is that "incredibly annoying when used against us" pop handoff McDaniel used against us Week 18 that could go to either, leaving it up to Josh to read. Either can run normally. Play action to one to pass to the other. Motion Kincaid to the slot or split him out to the boundary.

Get a true burner X in this draft and the Bills can set up against nearly any defense in the league

  6. He did a great job as a change of pace back and I doubt he cost much but man, I am getting nervous with each FA pickup that isn't a S

Very good signing. As others have said, get a better and cheaper vet than Murray/Harris and draft someone late like Gore jr.

5th round seems to be good value of a change of pace back (preferably named Williams)

We have to be under the cap by today. I'm sure we were.

However, I don't think it's by much at all. After re-signing Daquan Jones, AJ Epenesa, Taylor Rapp, David Edwards, and Cam Lewis and signing Mitch Trubisky, Nicholas Morrow, Mack Hollins, and Matt Haack - in trying to keep track of the moves we made to get out from under 42+ over and factoring in those moves - I have us "right up on it", as Beane likes to say.

Yeah. At this point the only moves I can see that free up enough cap space to sign anyone are a Taron Extension (which will likely be for in season moves) and a Diggs restructure (which would have been quick and easy to do if the team wanted)

If there are teams in the top 5 of the second round that are desperate to move up into the first round, I would listen to their offers.

I'd say there is a non-zero chance Carolina gets desperate and stupid

I agree. We have no draft ammunition to trade up. Whoever falls the furthest to us is who we get and consider ourselves fortunate.

I will not be shocked if Beane trades back into the top or middle of the 2nd round if it gets us a high third but if not I think there is fortunately enough of both this year that I think it's possible to get a quality starting WR2 and S within the first 60 picks

I just don't like how it doesn't offer options.

Wonder more. You have to take someone out to put someone in.

Easy. At the moment take out a safety and play TJ as the 4th DB and William or Bernard as a tweener

Because right now Rapp is scraping the bottom of the barrel. The rest is eating splinters

    Bums me out.

He and Geno Stone were my favorite safety targets, and both are off the market.

The Cover 1 guys liked Alohi Gilman, but he's off the market, too.

I still expect the Bills to sign a safety, but the longer they go without doing so, the more I begin to suspect that a high draft pick may be used on one, and that Rapp may actually start at SS.

    Huh.

I'm not saying you're wrong but ugggggggggh.

I'm fine with Rapp as a fringe S starter but he's not a long term fix. So we cut Poyer for the guy Poyer started over and need to fill both FS AND WR2 in the draft if we stand pat. That does not give a huge window of options

  12. Really? Because the one position I thought the Bills might have an overabundance of depth at was LB. This one is a mystery to me

From WGR's Sneaky Joe's brother who follows the Eagles (sounds like a decent depth signing).

So he's hopefully less of a liability than AJ Klein
