We’d effectively have our potential Week 1 starting lineup in place, then any other FAs and draft picks can round out the squad.

Pretty much. A solid (not necessarily spectacular) starting safety to pair with Rapp gets the Bills a starting roster that I think can win the division while overall having gotten younger. Hope that you get some incredible play out of your new rookies.

Rapp and Blackmon were always the budget starting safeties I would target in FA year one of my Madden franchise.  Blackmon is a good athlete, and put him in with a guy like McD, and I think he could be a long term option for this team.

Completely agree. Do I want the Bills to draft alternatives? Absolutely. But Blackmon and Rapp are complementary to each other and a tandem like that would mean that the Bills are not forced into overdrafting or rushing in someone who isn't ready.

Beane is going to wait it out . This years safety market is so saturated i think that we will see a signing like the Floyd signing of last season, Beane will wait until a lot of them have jobs & there will be a good Vet left that wants to work & the Bills will be their destination .

I think that is why Poyer jumped so quickly to sign with the Fins too because he knew if he waited he might be on the street corner with a sign saying .

WILL WORK FOR VETERAN MINIMUM !!

Pretty much what I think. Someone is going to lose at musical chairs and take a bridge to a year where the market isn't so flooded. Simmons or Adams might be one, but even a budget FA would let us develop a guy.

Bills need to find economical contracts as they did with Poyer and Hyde did were signed.

I'd call that plan A, but considering some of the holes, I am not against taking the Floyd route: if a fantastic S is not seeing the money he wants, offer him a one year rental and draft a safety (or two) in rounds 1-4. I'd not sneeze at Cooper DeJean, Bullard or Bullock somewhere in there.

I still move him to Safety and switch to a 4-3

People are giving you business for this, but if the season started today that is exactly what I would do. Tell me who on this roster is a better Hyde style center-fielder? I've heard people say Taron hits harder than some linebackers, and he clearly has the speed, instinct and ball skills.

Now, I want (and suspect) another safety in FA and one in the draft to keep our scheme, but I honestly think the Bills could play a bit heavier without giving up too much in pass coverage (Milano, Bernard and Williams are generally excellent in coverage)

  6. Look, he's a good player but that looks like it's going to be the last of their salary cap before rookies on a one year deal and they are probably going to need to add some void years to fit him.

They may want to consider avoiding using Hurts as a battering ram if they're so concerned about his longevity. I think Siriannis hold on the hc job is tenuous

Believe me, I am hearing that. They effectively fired his choice of OCs after the season and brought in Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio which...to be fair, are fairly objective upgrades, but the message the local tea readers get is that the leash is short.

To really hammer home how much they used him as a battering ram, they used the Brotherly Shove all season while Dorsey held off the planned runs and Josh and Hurts still tied for Rushing TDs. I took a quick watch of all Allen TDs in 2023 and by my count 5 were Schnowplow, two were rugby scrums and the remaining 9 were josh taking a snap reading the coverage and going in untouched.

Stupid pet peeve of mine but I hate when writers don't use that whole quote.  "Jack-of-all trades but a master of none IS OFTENTIMES BETTER THAN A MASTER OF ONE"

Samuel was rated the #1 running back in all of New York in high school.  He primarily played running back at Ohio state before transitioning to wide receiver for the nfl draft.  This guy is our deebo Samuel!  He's super fast and is not afraid of contact , just look at the highlights!

In Carolina he played with Cam Newton who at that time was running on fumes.  He then played with the likes of pj walker and Sam Howells. Just wait until this guy has a dynamic qb like allen.

    I love the full quote

But yes, I don't think Samuel is going to break any solo historic NFL records while he's here. But that he can be used in so many ways means that Brady has more options on matchups while using similar personnel groups and run similar plays with different groups

Curtis Samuel has a fairly unique skillset.  Comparing him to Beasley or others is a waste of time IMO.

He has spent his entire career under Ron Rivera and with the dumpster QBs he was forced to play with, sure didn't help his career.

I cannot say for sure how he will be used in Buffalo and how successful he will be.

That said, I believe he is a decent receiver, and it will be up to Brady and Josh to make the signing a very good one or not.

Personally, I am happy with the signing BUT still want an outside WR on Day 1 or Day 2.

That's where I am. I think he is *better* than what we had for a WR2, but his true value will be slot and backfield.

I know this was explained but I forget. What's the point of a 6/1 release for White versus 2 weeks ago when it was announced

The bills get a little bit more total this year, and that amount is enough to sign out draft picks and have a bit more left over for in season street free agent acquisitions

Don't understand this move from Eagles perspective?

Only way it pays off is if Hurts misses seom time and Pickett looks good and then you trade him.

All they did was lose draft position and gain nothing.

    What am I missing?

    *Raises hand from Eagleland*

From the bits I have heard in local talk radio, there has been some concern about Jaylen Hurts' ability to stay healthy. He missed a bunch of games near the end of the regular season in their SB run and they are conjecturing whether the fall off at the end of 2023 was an unreported injury because the Eagles OC at the time (Brian Johnson) simply could not develop a blitz beater package so Hurts started taking a lot of hits. Plus, they were running Hurts a ton in goalline situations: he was tied with Josh for QB rushing TDs despite Josh having 10 pounds and 4 inches on him.

Talk show hosts were considering trading for Justin Fields

I mean, I am not complaining about a team that we are going to need to play taking an incredible cap hit for no player but maaaan that is a dick move on the way out.

    Thomas  4.33

    Legette 4.39

    AD Mitchell 4.34

    Worthy 4.21

I'd add Troy Franklin to the mix too, but with that list I feel comfortable waiting for 28 or even moving back a bit.

This is totally a guess, but with 3 year/$24M $15M guaranteed, I think we'll find that breaks down to something like a $12M signing bonus with a void year ($3M/yr), vet min salary for >6 years of $1.2M, $0.8M of per-game roster bonuses so $5M cap hit.  2025, $3M salary for a $6M cap hit.  2026, $7M salary so $10M cap hit, but no new money guaranteed.  If he's making good here at age 30, Bills will try to extend him.  $2M of the reported $24M would be incentives for stuff like >1000 yd season, >80 receptions, pro bowl, all-pro, and so forth.

So my guestimater would break it down as:

    2022: $5M cap hit

    2023: $6M cap hit

    2024: $10M cap hit

2025: FA, $3M void year to extend signing bonus

If I'm right, that's a dang good deal.

That's along what I was thinking. There might be just enough money in the bannana stand to get a discount S starter and then we are free for BPA

I like the signing and value.

Maybe it's a "grass is always greener" mindset, but how is Gabe Davis worth 1.5x Samuel or Hollywood Brown in the open market?  I understand  that he's younger, but his health has always been an issue.  What am I missing?  He had one historic game several years ago, but otherwise has been very pedestrian.  He never had a 1,000 yard season, never had 50 receptions... despite being in a pass heavy offense with a great QB, and 3 different OCs had a desire/need to get him more involved.

No, you're not alone with that thought.

I'm less amazed that Gabe got bank because teams overpay for WR2 all the time. What HAS surprised me is that quality #2 guys are signing for far less than I expected on the market. Spotrac had him at $11.5M AAV and the Bills got him for $8 M a year (with potential void years) and Marquise Brown for $7 M

I think the Bills made the more financially sound move.

A true burner? Faster then the 4.31 Samuel runs?

OK fair enough: More dedicated X receiver. If the team thinks that he can do that full time great, but considering the Kyle Shanahan inspired wrinkles that he ran, the comparison is closer to Deebo Samuel than a traditional #2 boundary WR.

That said, he looks about 50/50 and has the speed to take off the top of the defense so that's not an impossibility.

    Fixed

Haha fair. The overall point I am going for is that if the Bills are smart (and so far what I've seen from Beane and Brady has reasonably been so) is that the Bills aren't going to be a "stop X and you stop the offense"

We were that at stretches last year. If teams could shut down Diggs (and a lot made sure they did) it could be an absolute grind. Now, Shakir and Kincaid came along down the stretch and Cook became a revelation. With Samuel, and then a 2nd-3rd round burner then I really think Beane will have the luxury of BPA

  18. 2 hours ago, BeastMaster said:

People need to watch more of Samuel because he does get behind the defense for big plays on occasion. He's definitely more than a slot guy.

I think his ability to make things happen after the catch has led to him being targeted more quickly which in turn has kept his YPC low, but the ability to make plays downfield is there.

He seems like a rich man's Shakir who is a little bit more experienced playing boundary WR, and has some juice being used out of the backfield.

After sleeping on it, I am fine with that. If there was one thing I held up as why I liked Brady better than Dorsey it's that Brady put an emphasis on scheming against the opponent each week. Against the Cowboys (who had no run defense) and the second Chiefs game (depleted defense, needed as much TOP as possible) he made excellent use of heavy sets. He attacked bad secondaries when he saw them.

Last offseason I gushed about the possibilities of using a 2 TE set (Knox was the disappointment, not Kincaid) but now I'm seeing the advantage with 3 and 4 WR sets. Trot out Diggs, Shakir, Samuel, Kincaid and Cook.

Standard 3WR: already solid and versatile route options

    4 "WR" using Kincaid

    Bunch formation

Put Samuel in the backfield with Cook: There is that "incredibly annoying when used against us" pop handoff McDaniel used against us Week 18 that could go to either, leaving it up to Josh to read. Either can run normally. Play action to one to pass to the other. Motion Kincaid to the slot or split him out to the boundary.

Get a true burner X in this draft and the Bills can set up against nearly any defense in the league
