The Bills Have Drafted Their Pass Catching TE, But.....
VJ91 replied to VJ91's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nelson will be lined up against LB's & safeties, yes. However, this complicated playbook that Shoenert has inherited from the last egotistical OC who inherited from the egotistical OC before him, going all the way back to the idiot OC that Gregg Williams hired 10 years ago, worries me. Derek Fine started catching every damn ball that came near him, including that TD pass the first game he played. And just as fast, Turk-ey locked him back to the bench behind Royal and Schouman, the two guys that allegedly knew the blocking schemes better, but could hardly catch a pass between them. Now, here comes another kid with pass catching skills that can't block worth a damn. That's just great. Turk-ey will want to start him at 4th string, right? -
This was said in that same article: "The Bills have room under the cap and it would certainly shore up a position of need for awhile as Hill will be just turning 27 when the season starts." B.S. The Bills never have any room under the cap! I don't know about Hill's drug problems, and if they are true, it might limit the number of teams that go after him. But that aside, any other team that competes against the Bills for a young, expensive free agent will always have the upper hand. Why? Their infamous "Cash to the Cap" of course! They almost always offer one less year, or a smaller signing bonus, even as in the case of Peters, when we hear rumors that the Bills offered a "competitive" deal, it is almost never quite enough, because of their stingy accounting policy. If Brandon goes out and gets Hill, even with a 4 game suspension to start this season, I will be really pleasantly surprised. Unless his Bills are the only team that wants him because of the 4 game suspension, if it happens. But if Hill gets interests from other teams, remember this prediction, no way do the Bills sign him. He needs to be older, or coming off a serious injury, or both, for the Bills to get a quality free agent.
-
While I respect your opinion, every pertinent Bills coach and Brandon himself has already said Wood will be given the opportunity to start at guard this season.
-
Who cares what "Bills Daily" thinks?
-
I think it is pretty obvious Donte will get suspended. He did after all get charged and has a court date set. I would be shocked if the Commish let him slide, considering the recent suspension of his own damn teammate. It seems to me that this new "inner circle" seems to be slowly ridding itself of some of the under-achieving players that Levy helped draft and sign as FA's, and of course some of the older players Donahoe was in on. Donte was all Marv Levy, in my opinion, and I would not be surprised if the Bills dumped him before this season starts. But whatever happens with Whitner, I agree that he has a lot to do with all the run on safeties, and DB's the bills drafted today.
-
Well, one of the safeties (not corners) they drafted today is slated to be switched to LB, and played at Oklahoma, where they almost never got "torched." Come on, no NFL team can fill every hole with one draft. You have to admit they stayed true to their most glaring needs, and snagged one of the top 5 rated TE's in the 4th round, a value pick if there ever was one. I give the Bills a solid A, despite all the DB's they drafted today!

And, perhaps the arrogant offensive coaches of the perpetually 7-9-0 Bills could shorten the playbook at times to help the talented athletically gifted rookies contribute to their putrid offense! Again, think about how tall that kid is, and all the third and 4 or third and 5's he could have gone up and caught balls to keep drives alive on, if only he was on the damn field! Anybody remember that TD pass in the corner of the endzone early in the year on the road against a tough Jags defense?? It's hard to do that a second time when your coaches won't put you out there to do it! -
She's still cute, just like Joe Willy told her years ago. At least she can speak. That blond interviewing "Dr." Bill Cosby and the receiver with the same name but not related to Cosby, (talk about being desperate to create "buzz", or Cosby being desperate to sell tickets at 90 years old), was making me cringe she was so bad.

I don't remember them saying too much about how simple the Indiana offense was. I do remember them being excited about all those TD's he scored for Indiana. I also remember them saying he would have an immediate impact at the very least, in the red zone. -
They play great in his system because his "system" has plenty of well paid stars doing most of the important work. Brady, (and Cassel turned out to be quite a find, now making quite a bit of money for K.C. after the Pats put the franchise tag on him), Welker, Seymour, Maroney, Mayo, Moss, A.Thomas, most of the starting O-Line, Warren, Wilfork......I'm sure most of those players are being paid top buck. They certainly seem happy and proud to play through their first contracts with the Pats, despite what else is going on around the NFL. Then, if they reach their contract years, the Pats will do what they can, like every other NFL team trying to keep its own free agents. I have not seen the "Cash to the Cap" Wilson Bills use the franchise tag to protect an important free agent since.....have they ever used it??

Look at what the Bills are saying about Shawn Nelson: Buffalo expects Nelson to make an immediate impact in the passing game as a rookie as his athletic ability and size (6’5”, 240) will create mismatches against linebackers and safeties. That's funny, isn't that exactly what we were hearing about James Hardy, our big tall wide receiver, last year around this time? Remember, those mismatches he would create in the red zone? And, Hardy was our second round choice, and this tight end lasted until round 4. Here's the thing. I used to scream at the TV when the Bills had third and 4 or 5, and Hardy was on the bench because our coaches were so disgusted with his lack of football "intelligence". I screamed, "Just tell the 6'6 kid to run 5 freakin' yards, turn around and catch the high pass for the first down! How many defenses do you have to recognize to be able to pull that off, and keep the drive going?? But alas, the Bills coaches kept Hardy locked to the bench for most of his rookie season, "athletic ability and size to create mismatches" and all. I used to ask, just how stupid can this kid be, for our coaches to not even trust him to catch 3 yard passes over the middle? Only our "ever-demanding" offensive coaches know the answer to that one. So now, here comes yet another big tall athletic kid who our coaches say should have the dreaded "immediate impact." Yeah, that's before they toss him their 3,000 page play book, and demand that he makes zero mistakes out on the field, or watch from the bench behind Fine and Shouman, right? I hope Nelson is smarter then Hardy, so our perfectionist coaches will allow him playing time!

How can the bills fill the rest of the holes on the roster
VJ91 replied to billsfan89's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"Cash to the Cap". These obvious needs are not already filled because the Bills won't pay for talent. Free Agency starts the end of February, that is when the best players are out there looking for the best deals. The Bills did nothing. No team can possibly address all of their needs in one draft. And this off-season, the Bills have been reducing talent more then gaining it. Look at the Eric Wood pick. He is the trade for Jason Peters. If Wood can get selected to two consecutive Pro Bowls at guard over the next 4 seasons, then all we can ever say is that trade was a wash. -
Great pick. Even if the kid only come in on obvious pasising plays while beefing up and learning NFL football, he has the natural talent that both Kelsay and even Schobel lack. You can't teach talent and speed. That's what this kid brings.
-
Well, I agree they've done a good job in this draft so far. But these guys may all start only becuase the Bills suck. And Maybin may not be able to break into the starting lineup due to his inexperience anyway.
-
Nice. I give the Bills a Day One A-. The Byrd pick really pissed me off, considering Everette Brown was sitting there dying to get drafted. Does anyone think getting two of the best five DE's in this draft would have been "overkill", for a team that had all of 24 lousy sacks last year?? But they recovered and traded back into round 2 to grab the highest rated pure guard a few picks later, and that made me feel a lot better. Also, I am hearing that the Bills are projecting Byrd for safety, and they do have a need there, so overall I think the inner circle-jerks did outstanding so far.
-
That's perfect if the kid overruns plays, so does everyone else on Perry's D. Joking aside, I love this pick, because he seems to be a playmaker with talent. Penn State is a great program, and I'm looking forward to watching how he turns out compared to Orakpo, who was my personal favorite DE.

What has been our best draft pick since the SB-era?
VJ91 replied to grammer_police's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Eric Smedley a defensive back from Indiana. The Bills snagged him with their 7th round pick back in 1996 - #249, only 6 picks higher then "Mr. Irrelevant." That day, I really thought the guy would make the team and finish his career with at least 1 tackle, 1 interception and 3 sacks. Alas, he only ended up with 2 sacks for his career as a Bill, 0 tackles and 0 interceptions. But on that draft day, I really thought Smedley was the steal of the draft! Please expect many more posts similar to this one asking us not to care about "career accomplishments." -
As a life long die hard Bills fan, I'm not sure why you are so excited to post this article about Mike Mayock's phone. That said, good for the Jets. First, they waste the draft picks it will take to reach for Sanchez. Then they waste the money to pay him as the Number 2 pick in the draft. All of this for someone who could very well drop to the Jets anyway, if teams would not lose their minds on draft day. Go J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets. Please trade up for Sanchez.

Stafford got $41 Million guaranteed. The signing bonus will get pro-rated over the 6 year contract. They could afford another first round pick, even the Wilson Bills could afford two first round picks.....oh that's right, the Bills do have two first round picks. Well, let's hope they keep both and get two outstanding players, as opposed to trading down to save money! Back to the Lions. They need to finally spend money on their franchise, and investing in two top 5 or 10 picks would be a good way to show their fans that 0-16 was really the last straw!

Russ Brandon -This could b bad news
VJ91 replied to Heart Throb's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
At #11? That would make no sense to me. They should reach for Mack at #11 before taking a DE who nobody thinks will be off the board before 28!! Listen, Levy has some kind of stupid plan that they needed to start with a strong safety, to improve the "middle" of their defense in 2006. Nobody saw that crazy Whitner pick coming so high, especially when we all were expecting him to draft Ngati to improve the "middle" of their damn defense!! But Levy in '07, and the circle jerks without Levy in '08, did a much better job of drafting for needs and staying true to their "board". Lynch, Poz, Leodis and Hardy were top picks that did not shock or in my opinion, really piss any of us off that much. There will be no stupid "reaching" in this draft either, at least I really don't see any reason for them to do it! -
Wow, he is lucky. But what exactly is the official Bills mock session, anyway? Maybe the inner circle jerks will draft Maybin, he certainly fits their needs and won't be considered a reach at 11. But how can you be so sure the Bills "won't trade up" or "won't trade down", when teams will call other teams CONSTANTLY during the draft. As the # 11 pick closes in, neither you, nor your lucky insider friend, nor Ralph Wilson for that matter, know what team will be calling with what offer, if that team has somebody they really want!!

Godfather I & II are all time classics. Goodfellas is really a just stupid script saved by some great acting. You are obviously more of a fan of vulgarity and over the top violence then of real movies.

Draft Prospect Cliche- What's your favorite?
VJ91 replied to DDD's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My all time favorite vanilla evaluation is "this guy is a freak." When I read that, I think the guy could be an absolute bust more then if he was not labled a "freak." Example?....Please see Vernon Davis's average NFL performance early in his career, (although certainly not a bust yet,) he was a major "freak" coming out of college! -
How many picks will the Bills have this draft ?

Skooby, the best your inside info rants have done is be correct a week late. This call falls under a different category.....the who the f... cares where Lost-man ends up....category!! -
Scott Norwood or the actors from Three's Company?
VJ91 replied to Just Jack's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You have to be joking right? Or you must be a Giants fan, to want to get an autograph from Norwood. I'll tell you what you can do though. Give Norwood an Adam Vinatierri photo to display at his table. He can label it: "A Real Pressure Kicker" The more SB-less years that pass, the angrier I become at Norwood. Sure it's not fair. But he received his "Love" when those 30,000 fans adored him for missing that kick back in Buffalo. Of course those 30,000 fans thought their young talented Bills would win a SB soon anyway. Ha Ha, right?
