Questions For Those Who Have Seen

Recommended Posts

Is his game very similar to that of Schobel?

Later in his career Schobel perfected a few moves, but imo he is primarily a speed rusher. The "high motor" b.s. is just that. Few would be talking about Schobel's "motor" if he were black. Want a "high motor" player? London Fletcher.

Anyway, what seperates the two players in terms of style?

Thanks.

I think the reason Maybin was a high 1st and Schobel a mid 2nd is that Maybin is that much quicker. You have to guard against him going around the corner, but as soon as you do, he can cut inside with amazing agility. That is why he is so hard to defend. You can see this best in the Ohio St. game. In the Rose Bowl vs. USC, he just went around the left tackle a number times.

Maybin has that 1st step that is incredible...I'm not a big Todd McShay fan but I agree with him when he says Maybin's 1st Step reminds him of Jason Taylor...They look similar coming off the edge...They actually look similar period being long and lean...

I said from the get go that I would be OK with The Bills Drafting Maybin, Ayers, or Orakpo at #11 because they needed Pass Rush SO desperately...Maybin was clearly the best Pass Rusher out of the three...Ayers the best vs. The Run...If it was not for those dang Sr. Bowl Practices I may not have been so high on Ayers but if you watch him there his pad level is SO superior at the point of attack and he showed all the moves...Ayers was getting under HUGE linemen and pushing them around like rag dolls...Plus, to Me at least, Ayers looked like he was really competing and having fun doing it...I still think Ayers has the better upside in the long run and he's a bit bigger...But we'll see...No question Maybin has talent and a first step that is unteachable...And I'm still thrilled The Bills addressed the #1 Need on this Team at #11...They will be better on 3rd down in 09, and MUCH better if Schobel returns 100%...

Yes, Maybin is a bit more athletic than Schobel. This is from today's Buffalo News:

"Maybin's ability to burst off the edge is evidenced by his explosive workout numbers (40-inch vertical jump; 10-feet, 10-inch broad jump). His 40 time was about 4.6 seconds. By comparison, Bills end Aaron Schobel, a superb athlete, ran 4.75 in the 40 with a 38-inch vertical jump and a 9-11 broad jump."

Also,

BuffaloBills.com lists Schobel at 6-4, 243, and we do not hear many people calling him undersized.

I saw this guy play in person and on TV twice last year and he has to be accounted for. He is a relentless pursuit guy and teams will ahve to run right at him. If we have a guy like Kiawaka behind him it won't be an issue. if ellison is behind him, we are in trouble. The guy can play. I am ahappy. wished we would have gotten Cook, the fast TE in the 2nd or 3rd round but WTF?

Two things:

  1. 10'10'' in the broad jump is insane.
  2. I think folks like to hate on the speed rusher, because we've never seen its benefits. When you've got Stroud collapsing the pocket, suddenly you're in love with the "high motor" guys making second and third efforts pinching the quarterback into a scramble.

I can't answer you directly Bill but my PSU pals all say that what makes Maybin special besides that first step is that he keeps coming. There were times last year where he was handled at the point of attack but he's so fast that even the best lineman can't keep him off forever, and he only needs about 2 seconds to cover 10 yards.

Also, look at that athleticism and drool. He needs to put on more weight and since he's only 21, I have no reason to think he won't. Imagine him as 6-5 and 260 in 2 years. That is the future. I see that as less of a "project" because he has the tools and more of getting him into a more aggressive program than he's even in now.

This season, at his weight, I see him as a pass-rush specialist. Maybe that disappoints some but I got so sick of seeing QBs with 7 seconds to pass on 3rd and 19 last year that I'll take a specialist. A healthy Schobel and Maybin would be tough to account for. Also, you could see the Bills switch to 3-4 on occasion just to give a QB a different look.

Who's the NT?

now they just have to figure out how to stop teams on the ground on 1st and 2nd downs to make 3rd downs matter so they use Maybin.

anything less than 3rd and 5 - Maybin is a liability against the run

Doesnt Maybin have experience at LB? Any chance we will see him rotate in and out at both DE and OLB?

The Bills are going to play him at DE in their Scheme...That does not mean He'll have his hand on the ground on every down because the Bills do that "everybody stand up thing" a lot on 3rd Down...But they see him as a DE not an OLB in their Defense according to Dead Dick... :worthy:

That's exactly why I liked Ayers more...I felt he was a 3-Down Player from the get go who will improve as a Pass Rusher...I think right now Maybin is a 3rd Down specialist who will have to bulk up and learn to avoid getting destroyed by O-Linemen vs. the Run... :worthy:

Who's the NT?

I'm not suggesting they will play it for extended periods but I can see in a passing situation, lining up Stroud as NT for a down and having Maybin as OLB--threatening to blitz or drop back. With his speed, lining up like that would have the other line and QB paying a lot of attention to him.

Just suggesting that a pass-rushing specialist who can blaze forward from a standing position gives the Bills options that they didn't have before.
