Broncos dump cornerback Bly

By Mike Klis

The Denver Post

The Broncos' new management team is finishing up its evaluation of the defense. And the defensive players aren't faring well. The latest casualty was veteran cornerback Drè Bly, who was notified of his release this evening. Bly becomes the Broncos' fifth defensive starter who was cut in the past two days by head coach Josh McDaniels, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and general manager Brian Xanders. The other defensive starters cut Monday were Dewayne Robertson, John Engelberger, Jamie Winborn and Marquand Manuel. Backup middle linebacker Niko Koutouvides was also released and the Broncos are not expected to re-sign defensive lineman Ebenezer Ekuban, safety Marlon McCree, or middle linebacker Nate Webster, who will become free agents Feb. 27. Bly was scheduled to make a $3.25 million salary plus $400,000 with a workout bonus this year after making a combined $18.8 million the previous two seasons.

Any thoughts on at least bringing in Bly for a visit?

:w00t: I've heard of him. :D One of the two areas Buffalo doesn't need to waste money on in the offseason is DB. Even if Greer goes the Bills DB unit is very strong. Bly is 5'10". The Bills need bigger CB's not small ones.

He got released because he can't play.

;)

HE got released because broncos need cap dollars.

With the gutting of the defense going on if he could play they wouldn't care about his cap price. CB's who can play aren't let go for that price.

Wow, the Broncos have absolutely gutted their entire defense.

It looks like they are going into full rebuild mode. This is gonna put a <_< load of pressure on Cutler this year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see there first five picks all go to the defense.

The Broncos have similar struggles to the Bills. They have absolutely NO pass rush and I don't care who your corner is, if an NFL QB has a lot of time he'll shred any corner in the league. The Broncos cut Bly to release some cap room because they're completely restructuring their defense into a 3-4 scheme.

The Broncos decided, like Buffalo should, that they can survive with Bailey as their only superstar corner if they can get a pass rush... that said, either sign Greer and trade McGee or just say good-bye to Greer.

He got released because he can't play. If he could play, the Broncos are smart enough to restructure his deal to keep him. They found out that he's not "Terrell Buckley" light as they thought he was when they initially signed him, so the cut their losses. Like the well run organization that they are.

Bly sucks and the BILLS should stay away from him. He can't tackle and his fundamentals at the position are woeful. For every "big play" he makes, he misses 10 tackles or turns out when the play comes to his side. Jabari Greer is twice the corner Bly is at this point, is younger and likely cheaper.
