Cost him a tidy sum. What has he done as a head coach that would make him any better than what we have? It seems like people want change so bad that it doesn't matter what the change is. I really don't think Haslett would be an improvement. The only way we will improve at coach is if we stumble upon a young guy looking for his shot. Ralph won't come off the money for anyone else. Dick Jauron never played for the Buffalo Bills...spent about 5 years playing for the Lions and another 2 or 3 years with the Bengals. By all accounts, he was a good football player. Gotta be alarmed though, Hank Bullough (perhaps the worst head coach in Bills history) was the one who gave him his break as an NFL coach. DJ coached the Bills secondary in 1985 (2-14) under Bullough. But, he never played for the Bills. Jim Haslett did play for the Bills...he was a very good linebacker, won defensive rookie of the year honors in 1979, playing for Chuck Knox's tremendous defensive teams. Injuries took their toll on Haslett, and eventually he was released. He signed, and played for the "scab" NY Jets team during the 1987 strike season. It was ironic, because Hasletts' best Bills buddy, Fred Smerlas, was one of the more vocal critics of NFLers that crossed the picket line. To put it mildly, Smerlas and Haslett were both complete asses while in Buffalo, although they weren't devoid of talent. Both displayed the kind of immaturity that make us loath guys like Terell Owens today. Haslett cleaned up his act enough to get into coaching, but his true colors always come shining through. The guy is just kind of a jerk, and I wouldn't want him in Buffalo, coaching our team...the only thing that would make him an appealing candidate to coach the Bills, for me, is that he is one of the few guys out there who would covet coaching the Buffalo Bills, more than the job of coaching any other NFL team. Posted January 16, 2009 Share Posted January 16, 2009 A couple of comments on this thread: St. Louis didn't want to give Haslett the job during the season, they wanted to give him the job if the Rams won 6 games & the NFL ruled they couldn't put that in his contract because of the Rooney rule. He didn't win 6 games. Kay Stephenson hired Jauron, not Hank Bullough. Jauron was gone after the 1985 season, Bullough didn't keep him around for 1986. That's a relief. Getting your first break from Stephenson is much more prestigious than if it had been Hank. They should stick to Coors TV spots, bring them back for reunions and funny commercials for fantasy sports maybe casino greeters or selling drugs for ED.
