OT - Sabres to lay off employees

That's really too bad.  The players are idiots for expecting to continue down the same road and the owners are morons for creating this atmosphere in the first place.

Ding ding ding ding ding! Idiots on one side, morons on another. God help us.

maybe the players will chip in and help the fired employees pay their bills.

Maybe one day the players will realize that money comes from TV revenue. No one south of the Mason Dixon line even knows what the Stanley Cup is. In other words, no one gives a s#it about them. Because of that, TV deals PALE in comparison to NFL TV deals. The players are so rediculously big headed that they think they are more important than they really are. NFL brings in money. Thus, the players deserve (in relative terms of anyone really "deserving" millions to play a game) more than the NHL players do.

This is 100% the players' fault. No questions asked.

I know it would be tough to go to work the next year for 50% of your salary from the year before, but logistically, it makes sense, its fair, and its what needs to be done.

Actually it's not. The owners are the ones offering the contracts and the ones who commission the market studies that have effectively priced real fans out of season tickets. They deserve plenty of blame for their own stupidity.

This lcokout is driving a stake into the heart of this sport. And both sides are so freaking stubborn that a settlement may never be reached.

The idea of the NHL dying a slow death, and a new league being born, is not out of the question. Everyone starts even. Player contracts will involve experience-related base salaries, and then incentive clauses added in so that the better players make the higher overall salaries.

Food for thought, anyway.

not the sport...  just the business side.

I agree more of the business side...but the game IMO needs changing too...tag up offsides rule needs to come back, insitagator rule is a joke too..wider rinks (players are much bigger now)..rename the divisions back to what they were and come up with 2 new ones....

RJ > Bettman

you mean you can cross the blue line before the puck, so long as you dont touch it, and you must go back out and back in before you can touch it?

Jesus, and I thought explaning icing to a woman was hard enought.

Then you're not doing it right. Just show her 9 1/2 weeks. The visual explains it quite well.

Or are we talking about hockey?

The players are ****** because the owners will not be caving in this time. The sooner the players realize that the better off for everyone involved. Sooner or later it will start hitting the players in the pocketbook and they will fold so they might as well come to an agreement now. If they do decide to hold out for the long run they will alienated even more the dwindling fan base in the States and they are ****** that way because nobody will be making money. As has been mentioned, most in the States don't even know the NHL exists and the few that do don't care. Just check out the telvision ratings, poker outdraws them.
