Wifi coming to your car

From AllAccess.com:

People who buy CHRYSLER vehicles next year will have the option of turning their cars and trucks into wireless Internet hotspots, giving them the ability to listen to streaming radio in their cars. The company plans to announce TODAY (6/26) that the feature will be available as part of its "uconnect" system that will debut in most 2009 CHRYSLER, DODGE and JEEP models.

The wireless Internet will come as a dealer-installed option and will work over cellular telephone links. It will come with a monthly fee which has not yet been determined, spokesman TODD GOYER said.

GOYER said people will be able to use laptop computers in their cars and trucks just as if they were in an office or home. To access the Internet, vehicles will need to have "uconnect" hardware, which CHRYSLER will unveil to compete with FORD's "Sync" and other in-car electronic systems.

The uconnect system will link cellular telephones and personal music players to the car's onboard electronics, with the ability to control an APPLE IPOD with radio and steering wheel controls. The system also has navigation and real-time traffic features, controlled by voice recognition or a touch screen.

I had been saying for years that cars should have their own on-board computers and hard drives for music, video, navigation, etc. I'm surprised they don't have a LAN for syncing your car with your home or work network. And with wireless broadband from cell companies you can be online almost anywhere you go.

Mine does have an onboard computer with a hard drive for music and navigation.

The biggest thing stopping the car manufacturers from allowing someone to simply sync up to your home network is, imo, intellectual property issues.

Great, another distraction to take driver's eyes off the road. How soon before some guy causes an accident because he had one hand on the mouse surfing the web for porn and the other on his crank.

Don't worry, thats the next device that will come standard in all cares after this takes off!

Remember the good old days when your car was used as a way to get from Point A to Point B?

Now we need to have Wifi, DVD players. touch screens, etc?

A few weeks ago, a girl in my office met up with her best friend from high school, whom she hadn't seen in years. They went out for dinner. She had almost 225 photos (all nearly identical) to show us, thanks to her phone...

Sounds like a user problem to me.

Here's the cost.....

Chrysler want to turn your car into a Wi-Fi hotspot

The UConnect Web router will sell for $449, plus about $35 to $50 for installation. Internet service will cost $29 a month. The service will be available in August as a dealer-installed accessory and will be an option for all new Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles in September.

Excluding the $500 for parts and installation (which I agree with the reporter, that does seem a bit high) that $29/month is a lot cheaper than a lot of the wireless broadband services and even home broadband Internet access.

Wonder how you set up wireless network security in these cars, though...

I wonder if it would only be on if the car is on? If it's on all the time, I can picture people wardriving through parking lots instead of neighborhoods.

I would assume only while the car is on, but who knows. It is Chrysler, after all...

And FWIW - I'll admit, I've done a little wardriving when I've been on deadline and desperate to find a HotSpot...don't usually have much luck, though...
