  1. 1. Top available WR is rated #27 overall on our Draft Board

    • Take the WR we have rated #27
      17
    • Take the Best Player Available regardless of position
      59
    • Take the Best Player Available at a need position other than WR
      55

I appreciate your argument, but the bolded part is WHY you take the best player available. Theoretically, the best rated player has a better chance of panning out.

And, you can NEVER have enough good players, regardless of position.

GO BILLS!!!

If the best player available is guaranteed to sit on the bench for a year or two, how can he help the team, next year? The only way Ryan could help the Bills next year, is if he plays. That's the worst possible scenario for this team, and Ryan.

Now, lets assume the Bills have Ryan as their highest rated player on the board, when they pick at #11.

If there really isn't another worthy player, at a position of need, at 11 AND the team can't make a favorable trade down, then maybe he becomes the default draft pick. But that would also presume there is a real difference in the ranking (and RATING) between the two players.

None of us know how the Bills rate and rank draft prospects. But, there are likely a bunch of players with VERY similar ratings ranked within 10 picks of one another. For the sake of discussion, let's say there is 2 points, or so, of rating difference (on a 100 point scale) between 10 players For example (let's just start at #10):

Rank Rating

10 88.0

11 87.8

12 87.7

13 87.5

14 87.3

15 87.1

16 86.9

17 86.7

18 86.5

19 86.4

20 86.2

Suppose Ryan is #11 with a 87.8 rating and a WR is #16 with an 86.9 rating. Are you telling me that you would trust your rating system enough to pick a player simply because there was a fractional difference in their ratings?

To complicate matters, further, let's suppose the following: there is a CB (or another perceived position of need) at #19 rated at 86.4. The next best CB is is rated in the 60's and is FAR down your rating list. There is another WR, ranked, let's say, #28 by the team, with a 85+ rating, that is likely to be there in Rd #2? What do you do?

The entire "best player available" vs "need" discussion, is overly simplistic and a fool's argument. Rating, ranking, need, depth of the position in the draft, etc. are ALL taken into consideration. Some teams may value one of these factors while other teams weight another factor more. But, "best player" vs "need"? Not a productive discussion, without context.

You draft Kieth Rivers and thank the Lord while Goddell is reading the card.

As one of the few who wouldn't have a problem drafting Rivers. Rare is the lb, who comes into the pros who excells in the most underrated aspect of pass coverage. With the signing of Kawika Mitchell it's probably out the window though. If it were to happen though. It sure gives the Bills a lot of leverage, when Crowells contract is up I believe after this season?

No, you're stupid!

Thanks, Dean. Good post.

Why is the best WR rated only 27th on our draft boards?

The idea is impractial. Better, the top WR is rated #15.

Most Draft analysts don't show a WR in their "Top Player" list until about pick 20 this year. If you'd prefer to answer the question using #20 as the position on our draftboard of the first WR, feel free to offer your selection.

I'd take the #27 WR, since I have him rated much higher than #27.

OK, switch it up:

It's the 11 pick and you're up. Still available is a player the Bill's had as #2 overall in the draft, an OLineman. That OLineman is 17 players better on the Bill's draft board than the highest rated WR at 19.

Your selection?

TD, is that you??

The 'medalists' of draft-for-need Bills:

Bronze--Tom Ruud

Silver--Phil Doaks

Gold--Eric Flowers

With the good news being that based upon the poll results, 85% of Bill's fans are not as mad as Hatters.

LOL at the complaints that this poll is biased. Ummm, it's not biased -- it's asking a hypothetical. There's a difference.

It's like saying the hypothetical "If you win a hundred million dollars, what would you do with it?" is a biased question.

"But how do you know you've won a hundred million dollars? That's biased! You're biased against spending frugally! You evil person, you!"
