radio dude Posted April 7, 2006 Share Posted April 7, 2006 Well said, Jack. The concourses are one issue. What about a renovation of the upper deck. Can a fan truly say they're comfortable sitting up there? They are benches with no room to stretch or get comfortable in. I've been to the newer parks in Pittsburgh and DC...plenty of room and modern amenities. The harsh reality is that RWS is not that great a venue and that it can't compete with the other stadiums. They could be the Poor mans Detroit, we just need a white rapper from Buffalos version of 8 mile to make it big and a long haired white wanna be wrapper who can't decide on a type of music to play to hype the city. I do go back once or twice a year though. It seems like the downtown "revitalization" has been sort of mishandled for a long time. He would be wise to be leary of what has gone on before, and who wants to do what, in the future. I am still not quite sure what the rub is with your father/casino (sorry, no direspect intended, you were just being sort of vauge) and Golisano. I do know, however, that Golisano got very wealthy by being smart. Greedy too, probably. But, he also seems (at least from what he has said) smart enough to know that the success of his other businesses, depend on the economy of WNY. I am not being delusional, to think he would just write a $700 million dollar check to Ralph, all the problems are solved. It just seems that he represents our best hope of retaining this team in WNY. I think he is iintelligent enough and wealthy enough, to not try to rake the area over the coals, because it would not be in his best interest, ulitmately. BTW, in one of the articles about his interest in buying the Bills, it was mentioned that Golisano, early on, was initially rejected as a possible owner for the Sabres, by the NHL...anyone know/remember why? That's one thing I noticed from having been at Indy, Cincy, and Miami. When trying to get around, pre-game, between 1/4's haltime, and post game, you're constantly having to bob and weave your way through the crowds at RWS. 653787[/snapback] Could not agree more with this post. In 1990 Buffalo was the the 34th largest Metro Area in the US. After a decade of losing 1.6% of its population (the Top 50 metro areas average growth rate was 17.6% during this time), Buffalo was down to 43. Sure people can talk about Rochester, but even then Buffalo only moves up to 24 - and that number is lower if you give other cities comparable treatment (like giving Cincinnati the Dayton metro area.) In 1960, Buffalo was the 20th largest Metro Area. If every Metro Area were to grow at the same rate in this decade as it did in the last decade, then by 2010 Buffalo will only be 48th largest Metro Area in the country - behind places like San Antonio, Salt Lake City, Austin, Norfolk-VA Beach, Portland, Raleigh-Durham, Memphis, Greensboro-Salem, Providence, and Oklahoma City. That's a pretty grim list. How do you justify a franchise in Buffalo-Rochester over San Antonio-Austin or Raleigh-Greensboro, let alone Los Angeles? And heck, Okalahoma City-Tulsa and Sacramento-Fresno will be right on our heels, if not ahead of us, at that point. For the Bills to stay in Buffalo, they need a new economy. Everything else, be it a new stadium, be it Golisano, be it more government handouts is just rearranging deck chairs on a very slowly sinking ship. Golisano doesn't seem like the Daniel Snyder billionaire type to buy the team as a "plaything". He'll want it to be a working model, which given the market, will be a hard sell. I'm sure he likes the publicity that comes with being mentioned, but that appears to be it. As far as Ralph going to Albany singing the blues, I'm with whoever on the news last night that mentioned, "If you want public dollars, then open up your books." It's nice Ralph had the team since day one and it's really sad that he's the last of a dying breed that didn't make all his money somewhere else.
