It is really one of the top 3 Baseball Stadiums. I've been to ADD Park (San Francisco), Safeco, Yankee Stadium, Wrigely Field, Oakland Colliseum, Skydome/Rogers Centre, and Petco really puts all those to shame! If you and your wife are up for a bit of a drive, one of my favorite places is Anza Borrego. In the Anza Borrego State Park, a 1 1/2 mile hike into the park brings you to an amazing oasis right in the middle of the desert. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

SD Jarhead Posted March 27, 2006 Share Posted March 27, 2006 KRC...You've brought me out of my longtime lurking slumber. I've lived in SD the past 20 years (although currently stationed in Japan). I must concur with some earlier recommendations. First- go to Rubio's and get some fish taco's. You also should get to Petco for a Padres game. If hiking is your thing, Anza-Borrego is a great place to hike (depending on when you come...it's starting to get REALLY hot by early June). I also recommend a restaurant named Cafe Seville in the Gaslamp. It's a Spanish Tapas restaurant and they have a nice Flamenco Show on the weekends. The Hotel Del Coronado is a nice place to visit, and the beach there is beautiful. If you get a chance, I am also impartial to the graduation parade at MCRD on Fridays. It's free and It'll give you a chance to see some of the finest young people our nation has to offer. Hmm, if you get up to Carlsbad, drive the coast and stop at Jay's Gourmet for some good Italian. The Coyote Bar there also has good chow to match the drinks and live bands outdoors nightly. If a zoo is your thing, skip the zoo in Balboa and go to the Wild Animal Park in Escondido...it's much better. LabattBlue Posted March 27, 2006 Share Posted March 27, 2006 Was there on vacation a year and a half ago. I realize everyone has different tastes, but here are a list of my favorites... USS Midway Tour...very cool. When standing on the deck of the ship, it is amazing how big the ship is. It is a self guided tour(mp3 players) except for when you go up in the bridge where volunteers take you up 10-15 at a time. LaJolla...forget the ritzy shops and instead spend a half day wandering along the waterfront at LaJolla Cove. One of the favorite parts of my trip. San Diego Zoo...Outstanding, especially if you get to see the Pandas while they are active. Happened to be there within a year of when the baby panda was born. Worth the price of admission. Wear comfortable shoes and take the bus tour to see the outer parts of the zoo. Harbor cruise...take the one that goes both North and South of the city. Point Loma - Cabrillo National Monument. Fantastic views of the city, harbor and Pacific Ocean. Worth the drive. If you are going to see this, go on a clear day! There is also a military cemetary about halfway up the hill, that I wasn't even aware of. Truly moving to see all the white crosses. Aerospace Museum...very nice museum dedicated more to aircraft than outerspace. You can easily get caught up in all the exhibits and end up there for a half day or more. If I had to classify some of these as MUST SEE, they would be LaJolla Cove, Point Loma, USS Midway and the San Diego Zoo. We also went to Sea World and Disneyland, but if you don't have kids, I'd skip them in favor of some of the places I've listed. DieHardFan Posted March 27, 2006 Share Posted March 27, 2006 Have a TS in Escondito (mostly for trade value, but I take a least one week there every couple of years) and really have grown to love the area. Others have hit the highlights well. In addition: As stated above; The Wild Animal Park http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wap/index.html is not to be missed. Set up as a walking safari. Lots of neat stuff like a giraffe feeding station (they bend over and take food right out of your hand, pretty neat). It's an offshoot of the San Diego Zoo itself. If you have time see both but plan on spending a full day at each. Since you're in So Cal avoid the freeways before 10am and between 4 -6 pm at least. Trolley system is great, cheap and a show in itself. Goes from inside Mexico up through the city. Don't miss TJ. Get off the expressway at Palm ave and take the trolley in. [station is in between the two main southern legs]. I really enjoy Imperial Beach (right on Palm to the end). Nice easy going seaside town with a wharf and lots of great little eateries. Check the schedule and if there is a group that you are even remotely interested in go to Humphrey's for a concert. http://www.humphreysconcerts.com/ .
