Did Alec Anderson play backup center last night when McGovern went down?  Where is SVP?

Not as good as Alec Anderson

I've been saying here for 2 years Anderson was always going to get the first crack at center if anything happened

I too thought this was interesting that AA was the backup center instead of SVPG. Thinking forward to the offseason discussion … McGovern is a FA, and I think AA is a RFA.
I’m sure the Bills would love to keep the Oline intact but maybe they’d feel they could get a cheap year out of AA while they transition to the next starting C. I’m not sure we should continue to expect SVPG to develop into anything other than depth.

Still amazed SVPG hasn’t developed into even a remotely decent backup. Guy was a stud for 3 years for the Bulldogs. Won the award for best blocker in the SEC his final season, was all-pro SEC multiple times  and unless I remember incorrectly only gave up one sack during his collegiate career that amassed around 1500 pass blocking reps.

I get some players don’t just work out but he has the caliber and performance in the college ranks to at least be a backup at worst.

It's because being a college offensive lineman and being an NFL lineman are completely different games

Different styles of offenses , it's way more complex at the NFL level... Cyrus kounjojo was a multi-year starter at Alabama.. when they were a powerhouse

When Alabama or Georgia are playing other teams there's typically a massive talent Gap.. so their linemen just win on physicality and size differential and just brute strength

Everybody at the NFL level is very talented and strong.. which is why it takes a lineman who has not only the size but the technique.. that's the one thing svgp has been lacking since college, super refined technique... His lower feet and his upper half are not always in sync.. he was known to be a leaner at times at Georgia

He definitely has some good traits but he needed to grow as a football player

Anderson was playing a lot as the 6th O-line last year. They probably feel he has more chemistry with the starters than SVPG.

All I know is for the one play Anderson was in at Center, the O-line completely missed a blitz pickup, which is usually the Center's responsibility to align the protections, resulting in 3 Falcons all over Josh in less than 2 seconds.

Oh I understand that and I’m not advocating that he’s starter quality but he has the success to be a backup in this league. That SEC is filled with talent on the defensive lines who he lined up against regularly, a lot of which ended up being in the league albeit briefly.

Im sure part was his counterparts on the line as well to facilitate that success but you don’t walk out of a stacked conference with all pro awards and a blocking trophy simply by winning on your size and strength alone. One singular isolated year? Sure. Multiple? That’s some talent there.

Technique is fundamentally it in the pros so I can’t disagree on your main point. Especially given the work Kromer has done to develop the guys we’ve had in and out of the offensive line over the last 4 seasons

He missed all of training camp. Perhaps this is why Anderson is the back up now.

Svgp biggest problem at Georgia was he was a leaner into blocks... His footwork was inconsistent and so was his body control

So you can get him off balance, and he gets sloppier

Center as a position, is more of a mental position than physical now.. there are very few zero techniques who sit over the nose every play

So your combination blocking, double teaming, getting to the second level... He had a 6'7 guard next to him who went to the NFL.. and a 6'6 guard on the other side who got drafted in the second round

That's a lot of beef protecting a center especially in college where Georgia practices are usually tougher than the game.. sure he is talented.. he never cleaned up his sloppy footwork or his leaning because he didn't have to

Kromer can fix that , he should be a solid center

The last two draft classes are snapping up to be monumentally bad

Timed up horribly as we kick in fairly big second contracts to a bunch of guys that aren’t game wreckers.

The cheap labor must be good to compliment them or ….. well you’re seeing it now.
