Just approve the enhanced ACA tax credits now.  It really doesn't seem like it's that hard.

God forbid a political party does that in this country.

Why don't the dems just pass the bill as is?

I would rather my tax dollars and those of young people across the country not be used to subsidize health insurance for families making up to 600k annually. Just don’t approve them now.

Obama"s goal with the ACA was always to drive up health care costs to facilitate the adoption of a single payer system. Rising costs isn't a bug it's a feature.

I think the ultimate goal is to force a single payer system that covers all. Then everyone will have the same healthcare as illegals, and the rich will have a separate system of private insurance similar to how it works in the U.K.

Ultimately this will cut down on unnecessary tests and doctor visit (overuse of the system when it's inexpensive or free for some people) because the waiting times to get these things will go up massively.

And even among the universal healthcare nations, Canada doesn't rank all that well.

Because they like to keep their jobs.

The shutdown is popular with Democrat voters.

It's short-sighted because its unpopular with everyone else, but it helps them in blue states.

Exactly.  Health care is the only major voting issue that most people give a damn about that the general population trusts Democrats more than Republicans.  The economy, immigration, and crime issues all favor Republicans.  It may be short sighted but when Republicans  took the political backlash for shutting down the government in 2013 it didn't seem to matter as they controlled the presidency/senate/house three years later.

"This probably wasn’t their intention, but in drawing so much attention to the expiring Obamacare subsidies, Democrats have shown the country what a bad deal Obamacare was to begin with. The real problem is that the Affordable Care Act was never actually affordable,” opined The Washington Post editorial board on Oct. 5."

Fox News Channel's Maria Bartiromo asked Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Sunday if he thought the government would open this week, as the shutdown was "seriously impacting the U.S. economy." Cruz had an intelligent take on when it might be over, and why.

"I think it's likely to open Wednesday or Thursday of this week," he said

The Democrats will wait until after Election Day because they think a shutdown is good for energizing the crazies in their party. But I think it will either be late this week or early next week."

That sounds like a pretty intelligent assessment to me. The whole point of this exercise seems to have been to juice the leftist base, to try to appeal to them that somehow the Democrats were "fighting" for them. If they get people out and they can walk away with wins, even if they were in areas where they were already leading, they can say, "Hey, look, guys, we beat them," and convince the left they've done something. It gives them something of an off-ramp to argue.

They likely think this can help them in Virginia, where there are a lot of federal workers, and then they can all come out to vote. Maybe. But the federal workers and others in Virginia might also realize it's the Democrats who have been behind the shutdown. We saw Republicans had actually gained in approval since the shutdown started. We saw that the largest federal employee union, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), has called for everyone to vote for the clean CR and open the government.

As with many things with Democrats, this could backfire on them.

It says something about Democrats, too, if this is their motivation - that they're more concerned about their own power than they are about how such political games would affect the people who haven't gotten paid, the people on SNAP, the people who may otherwise be hurt by the shutdown, and the harmful effects on the economy.

It's completely believable, given what we have seen from Democrats.
