Best route from DC to Buffalo

Haha! make sure i leave friday night for a sunday game then.  Are there a lot of speed traps? and are there a lot of patrolers out at the wee hours of the night when i like to drive long distances.... 1am-7am

Can't quite speak to that time-frame, but they set up some tricky speed traps thanks to the terrain. Remember once cresting a hill and turning a corner, and there is a cop standing roadside aiming his gun at the cars going by (with a chaser car accompanying him of course). Fortunately I was doing reasonable speed. Pay extra careful attention in Harrisburg to stay on-route.

 

15 is an interesting ride...there's usually contruction somewhere along it slowing things up for a bit. There's a stretch where it seems like there's a McD's every 5 miles, and every 10 miles or so there's at least porn and/or fireworks shop...been to some of the McD's, not to any of the other two.

15 is much better than it was a decade ago. Much of it is 4 lane highway now.

And don't forget Clyde Peeling's Reptile Land...after dozens of trips from DC to Rochester, I finally stopped to check it out. It was in November, so it was pretty much deserted, but they have any interesting collection of BIG snakes, gators, and crocs.

the best part about rte 15 is that it takes you right by Bucknell University, home of the mighty Bison who you may remember from such episodes as "Bucknell beats Kansas, 2005 NCAA Tourney".....

And past the Little League stadium in Williamsport. We usually stop for lunch at the diner near the Little League Museum, which has some good views of the stadium below. Since the wife's cousin was on the 1989 LLWS winner from Trumbull, we check the museum out every now and then.

 

A buddy of mine makes that trip a lot; he said he found out from a trucker that there's a shortcut around Lewisburg (Bucknell) that cuts about 20 minutes off the trip. Not sure exactly what it is, but if you look at the map it ought to be apparent.

I-95 to I-495 to 270 to I-70 to Breezewood. From there 30 West to I-99 (220) to 350 to 322 to I-80 to 219.

So thats three for that route. In my first post that is what I recommended. And, you can always go the Straubs brewery in St Marys if ya need a beer!!!!!

This is correct. Route 15 is mostly highway now days. It is great. Since they opened the newest bypass (over Mansfield), I've cut at least a full hour each way off my time.

 

Oh, I always stop at Wegmans in Williamsport on 15 for a sub.

 

I can make it from Fredericksburg to Rochester by leaving at 4 am and taking 95 in well less than 7 hours.

Yeah, it is. I haven't been down that way in 4 years (used to go down every year to catch the fireworks on the Mall before the kids came...), but I expect my 5 year old would love Reptileland.

That was my favorite way, when stationed at Andrews AFB many years ago.

Going to Fredonia, the route up I-79 probably isn't to bad as you're half way to Erie. But going to Buffalo and/or east, I'd also take route 15 through Pa. 15 has got better over the years, amost 2 lanes each way now. There are still some sections one lane, though they are near the NY boarder in a less traveled section. There are also sections, as described, two lanes each way, undived, with 65MPH! It can be a wild ride.

Scariest non-accident incident I've ever had driving was on 15. Somewhere near Mansfield, on the 2 lane part, a semi is coming the other direction. The "airfoil thingee" on top of the cab comes off, and starts flipping around in the air. I am in a Geo Metroand the airfoil comes flying over the car about a foot above the roof and smashes behind me on the road. A foot or so lower and it would have been right in the winshield!

I just didn't care for the lane switches and the badly beat up condition at 130am. Not fun on somewhat unfamiliar roadway.

 

Of course, dodging the deer near Mansfield is also not fun times.
