See, that’s not so difficult! We maybe didn’t do enough scouting/research. We didn’t know that his skill set would transfer to the NFL. He doesn’t actually say “we would have taken him rather than trading down for DE Solomon Thomas” but that’s the implication. Spoken like a confident man who doesn’t believe he’ll offend his current QB or his 1st rounder that year by stating the obvious. I bring this up not to start the whole “we coulda had him!” debate again, but rather to point out that Kyle Shanahan is refreshingly candid. NFL coaches and GMs (and fans of teams who passed on Mahomes), again; it’s not that tough to say. Feel better? Is that what you want? Coach/GM to come out and assuage your hindsight? Some think they stopped the titans, but they didn't, the titans decided to abandon the run when they got behind in the second half. Also some think Jimmy cant lift the team because he threw the ball 8 times 2 weeks back but forget the rest of the season where he had normal numbers and threw quite a bit in the victory over the saints. Lay an egg, or lose to KC twice in the next couple of years (once is not enough for this franchise, they have lots of rings to fall back on), and the vultures would pick his carcass clean. No guarantees you could change Mahomes' habits and style of play. Here's the other thing sometimes we overlook: in San Fran, if Mahomes was Drafted - much like it would have been in Buffalo - he would have HAD to start right away. In KC Alex Smith was already the entrenched QB, who at the time looked like he was there for several more years, and Reid knew that. He knew Mahomes wasn't going to need to start right away and they could still win with Smith. That...makes a big difference when evaluating the situation for players, especially QB. The first time they tried to pass they were only put back to the 35 so they're still in field goal range. The second time they tried to pass they got sacked again and there was a holding call against Jake Matthews pushing then to the 45. Playing the hindsight game is fun because then the Seahawks probably wouldn't have lost to the Patriots in the Super Bowl by throwing a pick at the goalline. Does Shanny deserve some of the blame? Of course, but you could still play the shoulda/coulda/woulda game on their MVP QB throwing the ball away instead of losing 12 yards and better execution from your line which the penalty could have easily happened on a run as well. 2nd & 11 at NE 23 (3:56 - 4th) (Shotgun) M.Ryan sacked at NE 35 for -12 yards (T.Flowers). 3rd & 23 at NE 35 (3:50 - 4th) (Shotgun) M.Ryan pass short left to M.Sanu pushed ob at NE 26 for 9 yards (L.Ryan).
