The Best Matchup of Week Five: JAX vs. KC

Recommended Posts

I quite like the Jags, like the way they've been built and would love to see the Bills follow the same model. I was disappointed when Marrone quit. He wasn't well liked, for good reason, but I felt he was building something here (have to admit though I thought Hackett was a terrible coordinator and kept saying Marrone needed to get rid of him to really flourish as a coach, but he's called some great games for the Jags).

I think they might bring KC down on Sunday. Mahomes is due. But if the guy cuts up the Jags and throws multiple TDs again then you have to wonder when the crazy pace he's on this season will end.

If the Bills game sucks I'm definitely gonna be checking this one out.

Well you should know by halftime one way or another. None of the Bills' 4 games so far have had anything to play for in the second half. This one will probably end up going to overtime with a final score of 12-9.

KC's defense is awful, not as bad as that idiot Booger kept saying all night, but they can be thrown and run on.   Pretty good pass rush though, and Bortles is meh.

Keenum had a wide open Demarius for the game winner but missed him.  Would have taken the shine off KC's status right now, as Denver isn't some powerhouse by any means.

Then again Titans held Jax to 6 points a few weeks ago, and Jax has no stars left on offense this week.

19-13 KC in a yawner.

Ramsey on Tyreek Hill: It's not WR vs. CB matchup

Sunday's matchup between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs has some additional flavor to an already fascinating game.

In one corner, fans are in store to watch one of the league's top offenses led by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, while in the other corner sits the Jaguars, owners of the NFL's top ranked defense.

A spicy sidebar battle, however has been brewing in recent days between two of the NFL's top young stars.

Previewing Every Sunday Game in NFL Week 5

JAGUARS AT CHIEFS

Patrick Mahomes has faced mostly Cover 3-based defenses this season. He’ll see another Sunday, but it happens to be the league’s best. Will Mahomes be able to execute Andy Reid’s designer Cover 3-beaters? Or will he have to do what he did Monday night and make second-reaction (and sometimes third-or fourth-reaction) plays? This is about as compelling as a QB vs. defense matchup gets.

Week 5 NFL score predictions: A guide to best games, more

Jaguars (3-1) at Chiefs (4-0): 1 p.m. ET, CBS

Point spread: KC -3 Matchup quality: 68.7 (of 100)

Mike DiRocco's pick: Patrick Mahomes destroyed the Broncos outside the pocket last week (192 yards), and the Jaguars' No. 1 priority is keeping him from getting loose. They have the personnel to match up against the Chiefs' weapons, but the problem is maintaining coverage while Mahomes is scrambling. He will make three or four big plays outside of the pocket that will make the difference. Plus, the Jaguars haven't turned in back-to-back good offensive performances this season. Chiefs 24, Jaguars 20

Adam Teicher's pick: The goal for the Chiefs on Sunday is to score more than 20 points. Jacksonville was 1-5 last season in games in which it allowed more than 20 (the Jaguars haven't allowed more than 20 this season). The Chiefs were 10-2 last year and are 4-0 this season when scoring more than 20. It's impossible to see how the Chiefs won't get past that mark on Sunday at home, no matter the quality of the opposing defense. Chiefs 24, Jaguars 23

FPI win projection: KC, 59 percent. How good has the Chiefs' offense been through four weeks? It is the fifth-most efficient offense since 2006, trailing only the 2018 Rams and three iterations of the Patriots (2007, 2011, 2015). This might be Kansas City's most difficult encounter yet, however, as the Jaguars are FPI's top-ranked defense and have been the second-most efficient unit this season. The Jags are only slightly behind their pace from 2017, when they ended the season as the most efficient defense.

'It's going to be crazy': Jaguars pose toughest test to Chiefs' offense

Adam Teicher ESPN Staff Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Sunday's game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars at Arrowhead Stadium is about as close as the NFL gets to having a matchup between an irresistible force and an immovable object.

The 4-0 Chiefs lead the NFL in scoring, while the 3-1 Jaguars have allowed the fewest points in the league. The Chiefs have the NFL's hottest young quarterback in Patrick Mahomes and a strong group of skill players, and the Jaguars boast a defensive lineup full of good, young talent, led by cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Best vs. Best

Comparing the Chiefs' offense and the Jaguars' defense:

CHIEFS OFFENSE NFL RANK JAGUARS DEFENSE NFL RANK
Scoring 36.3 1 14.0 1
Total Yards 410.3 8 259.3 1
Pass yards 297.3 9 164.3 1
Rush yards 113.0 14 95.0 2
First downs 24 5 14.5 1
Turnovers 1 1 3 t25
