I hope 2019 Trump decides it's a waste of tax payer money to hold an address.

The reaction by the Democrats who never go anyway will be hilarious.

has a POTUS not delivered one since it became a custom?

all seats should be wired with a buzzer for your behind like William Castle's "The Tingler" so if you are a loser Dem then you get buzzed and have to stand anyway.

Watched it a few years ago and it must have been one of the first to introduce an LSD-based experiment....

It's not a custom, it's a Constitutional requirement.  A report anyway,  it doesn't have to be a speech.

Washington and Adams gave speeches.  Jefferson delivered a written report, which was the standard until Wilson reintroduced the speech.

"Silent Cal" Coolidge was the first speech to be broadcast via radio.  The term "state of the union" was coined by FDR.  Truman was the first televised SOTU and LBJ started the practice of a prime time speech.   Republicans started the tradition of the minority response during LBJs term.

So Trump does have to report to Congress, but he doesn't have to give a speech.  He could submit a written report as was the custom for over a century, or he could modernize the SOTU as a series of Tweets, a Snapchat,  or a push notification

He NEVER learns! Ben Rhodes’ SOTU swing at Trump hits Obama HARD

Good Lord. Is Ben Rhodes the least self-aware person on the planet? ..................Because this tweet is pretty compelling evidence that the answer is yes:

Normally at this time people are speculating on whether a President will lay out a credible policy agenda and vision for the country, not whether he can successfully complete the task of reading a series of slogans off a teleprompter.

9:38 AM - 30 Jan 2018

Remind us, Ben … who’d you work for again?

Trump will be fine as long as he throws in a pained, deeply earnest "this is not who we are" or "make no mistake" or "let me be clear"....... Amirite Benny ?

The answer is simple.  The American people.

The answer is incorrect...............the Obama Administration, which he tries (and spectacularly) fails to defend daily on twitter

Meanwhile ..............back in the thread.

It is just us or does it seem like more and more people are actually NOT looking forward to the State of the Union address tonight? Granted, people have been grumbling about this spectacle for far longer than Trump has been president, but this year people seem even less interested in watching.

That being said, Iowahawk wrote the shortest, sweetest and maybe the BEST SOTU address ever … he should send it to Trump:

Here's a good SOTU address: "There is nothing wrong with this nation that can't be made better by cancelling this idiotic made-for-TV clownshow. Go home and may God have mercy on your soul."

8:50 AM - 30 Jan 2018

:D

Part of the annoyance of this year’s address is the amount of drama and nonsense the Democrats are planning; between nobodies in Hollywood holding their own SOTU to Kirsten Gillibrand bringing the mayor of Puerto Rico, it’s going to be a serious sh*tshow.

And finally.................Anti-Trump Celebrities Plan "Peoples State of the Union"

It's impossible to  understand how unbelievably out of touch these celebrities have become.

The Hillary moment at the Grammy's wasn't embarrassing enough for them? Are you telling me they have actually convinced themselves that not only does America care about what they have to say politically, but that we'll actually PAY to hear them say it?

Once again, the Trump/Pence 2020 campaign should thank Hollywood for its endless stream of contributions to their re-election campaign.

Not that it’s a surprise list, but the White House info message was sent out saying:

A few important issues that you’ll certainly hear about tonight:

• Tax cuts and the economy: The biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax code in at least three decades is already fueling an economic boom.
• Infrastructure: President Trump will outline a $1 trillion investment for a large-scale, fast rebuild of America’s depleted infrastructure.
• Immigration: The President will explain his framework on immigration reform, including border security, DACA legalization, protecting the nuclear family, and replacing the visa lottery with a skills-based approach.
• Trade: Building on the President’s address at Davos last week, America will insist on trade deals that are fair and reciprocal.
• National security: America is returning to “peace through strength” in world affairs, making our stances clear to friends and enemies alike.

Untitled.jpg

The President calls for an end to the partisan bickering....................and to work together for ALL Americans.

Chamber gives a standing ovation. Sen. Schumer and Rep. Pelosi sit on their hands

Very illustrative for the country.

.ADDED:

.@chuckschumer’s face when @realDonaldTrump talks about how he wants to overcome differences and bring people together. This isn’t a gif, it’s a real picture.
