Matt_In_NH
I absolutely hate they all knew this was coming, no way you get inspired performance in that scenario. We all knew it was coming and so obviously they did also.
eme123
Thanks, you saved me alot of typing. If I were a Qualified GM, Buffalo would be the last place I would go in all honesty and I love this team. Ownership is just too young and proven to be way over their heads right now trying to deal with 2 professional teams. I have never once called our team dysfunctional ever until today. My NE and Jets fans don't understand this move at all either with the Pegula - Ryan fiasco. They actually thought Rex was the only thing holding the team back as Whaley filled this team with talent. Ohh well, who is next up on the chopping block? Don't get me wrong....Whaley wasn't perfect but he had an eye for talent and a clear vision for a football team. He WILL be a GM again and some other team is going to experience the fruits of his Buffalo learning curves. The Pegulas were just preaching continuity not too long ago. Apparently thats out the window.
Saint Doug
I don't think this is what the Pegulas had in mind when they fired Whaley today. They certainly didn't wait to fire Tim Murray, even though both the expansion draft and regular draft are approaching quickly. I'm sure this is just Terry making stuff up as he goes. The Pegulas were just preaching continuity not too long ago. Apparently thats out the window. And they just gave Whaley an extension about 8 months ago. But, hey, it's his money to waste. PromoTheRobot
The other thread is enormous and I keep seeing this asked in several threads, so thought this was worthy of its own otherwise it will get buried and the question will continue to come up... Bills were wise to wait until after the draft to clean out the front office http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/04/30/bills-were-wise-to-wait-until-after-draft-to-clean-out-front-office/ You would think that is obvious. buffaloboyinATL
"Now that the draft has ended, the Bills can move on. The only problem is that the new G.M. may not have hired the fairly new head coach. Which could eventually set the stage for even more dysfunction, culminating in the new G.M. wanting his own coach unless the new coach ends up being stronger than the usual G.M." So, its a lose-lose scenario, unless you already had a secret agreement with your future GM. The difference here is, I think they have had a new GM in mind all along and he is ok with the fairly new head coach, and visa versa.
Gugny
Whaley was the best thing that happened to this team in 15 years. Ralph sucked. Pegula sucks. Whaley did one hell of a job with one owner who was senile and another who is inept. I wish the best for him and I hope he goes somewhere else and builds ANOTHER top 5 defense. Bills Pimpin'
Whaley was the best thing that happened to this team in 15 years. Ralph sucked. Pegula sucks. Whaley did one hell of a job with one owner who was senile and another who is inept. I wish the best for him and I hope he goes somewhere else and builds ANOTHER top 5 defense. Whaley was a power monger who didn't get along with one of the three head coaches he worked with. He had 4 years and couldn't help get the team to the playoffs. Furthermore, the Bils had the best draft in a very long time and got an additional first rounder in 2018. I think enough has been reported to believe the decisions of this draft were made by McDermott. Whaley would have effed it up for sure. There is no way they could let that mumble mouth hang around the building when McDermott was gong to make all the decisions. I Am not going to deny the firing was a little wonky and Pegula is still a novice at this, but they tried to be kind and give the dude some kudos as they let him go and it sent mixed signals. But I do agree with you he seems like a nice guy and I hope he gets on somewhere else.
thunderingsquid
This was correct timing to change the guard after the scouting period of the year was over. Everyone knew they were dead men walking and props to them for hanging in there and following through on a great, great draft. As for Whaley, I thought he was very good at evaluating talent off of the scrap heap and making the most of castoff free agents. I think he improved with age on contracts but from what I read he probably didn't have much to do with them. He had decent but not stellar drafts but his weaknesses were of course his QB evaluation and his tunnel vision with certain college programs. I will miss his strengths and certainly hope he does well elsewhere, as long as it is in the NFC.
