I suspect it has less to do with smear and more about prodding the bear for the sake of marketing, with a twist of self-righteousness. Like a good agitator, he walks the razor-thin line between imply and infer, and snags people with it left and right. He'll tell one person to "go hump a fist" and his fans will re-tweet how wonderful and right he is. What his ego won't tell him is that while he may have a lot of fans, most people find twitter wars involving public figures/journalists to be childish. But on colleges, where the process is extra-judicial and administrative...yes, it does happen. It's actually happening to a friend of mine. He meets up with this girl at a bar, they get caught banging in a somewhat public place. She throws him under the bus and cries sexual assault. The cop who busted them obviously saw what was going on, and legal charges were dismissed pretty quickly. THEN the college student court steps in, even though both students live off campus and the event occurred off campus. He's currently in the middle of a "trial" where the only evidence against him is seven pages of character witnesses claiming that he is weird.
