I think FF got the details wrong, but there was a part in the book, the basic gist of which was "underwater zombies cause problems for sub resting on bottom." It was in the book, but I cannot remember the details and let somebody borrow my copy. Knew they caused problems for the submarine in one of the water injection systems. But then zombies swarmed the hull, and if they slipped into the reactor cooling system, it would be trouble. So they had to move and fight the hunter sub.
