Some of the heat for that has fallen on offensive coordinator Nate Hackett, but coach Doug Marrone -- who brought Hackett along from Syracuse last season -- deflected blame away from Hackett on Thursday. "If there's any blame, it should be on me [for] anything that happens with our football team, first of all," Marrone said. "I think secondly, if it was a problem with one thing, it would be very easy to fix. It's really collective. But ask defensive end Khalil Mack about the University at Buffalo-area hangout, and he knows exactly what you're talking about. The former UB standout and Raiders rookie -- selected fifth overall by the Raiders in May -- gave the establishment a shout-out on his conference call with Buffalo reporters Wednesday, in advance of the Buffalo Bills' trip to play the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. He was very high on Mario Williams and saying that his team would have difficulty against him since he is on the right side. He has a young inexperienced OL. Mack has flashed in recent weeks, getting all three of his sacks since Week 11. There has been no rookie wall for the No. 5 overall pick from Buffalo. “It doesn’t seem to happen with him,” Oakland interim coach Tony Sparano said. “He’s been really steady and has gotten progressively better each week. Press Conference: Coach Sparano Thursday Oakland Raiders cornerback Tarell Brown continues to be sidelined with a foot injury but the team continues to be optimistic that he’ll be able to play in Sunday’s home finale against the Buffalo Bills. While Brown didn’t practice, the news on rookie quarterback Derek Carr is more encouraging. After being limited in practice on Wednesday due to a sore right thumb he injured late in the fourth quarter against the Chiefs, Carr was cleared and worked out without restrictions on Thursday. The rest of the Raiders injury report is below. Did not practice: WR Vincent Brown (groin), CB Chimdi Chekwa (groin), WR Denarius Moore (knee/ankle), RT Menelik Watson (foot/ankle), TE Brian Leonhardt (concussion). Simms is also the lead NFL analyst for Bleacher Report and joined us by phone to talk about this weekend’s matchup including what he sees from the Bills defense. He called the unit the “top defense in the NFL” and had high praise for the defensive line. Simms then switched gears to talk about the Raiders and their rookie linebacker Khalil Mack. “In the run game, he’s unbelievable. He’s a total mismatch against tight ends. He throws them around like they’re rag dolls. He’s of course strong and powerful to hold up against offensive tackles as well. Spiller as he has not yet been added to the active roster. “I think he looks good. He really does,” said Marrone. “It’s just a matter of waiting until the end of the week and making a move there. The only concern I have is – it’s not really being in shape, but to be able to play and run plays in and out, in and out, in and out and to make sure his conditioning is right at that level. It seems to be okay. I think it will just get better. I know he looks explosive.
