active players who are candidates for "best ever"

Recommended Posts

Don't think Polamalu even cracks the top 10, Ed Reed was better imho. I'd say Brady, Manning, Watt, Gates (Tony G. is hard to beat), Graham, Sherman, Rodgers and Megatron are at least top 5 for their positions. I don't think Gronk will have a long enough of a career to be considered anything better then great.

i could be wrong but wasnt reed considered more a FS? definitely one of best ever whichever. very different kind of game than Troy's though

Wilson the greatest QB ever? Yeah, no. Brees neither. Luck certainly has the trajectory, though. And the other three I agree with.

Gates belongs in the TE conversation, and Thomas may soon as well. For those guys, they have Gonzalez's longevity to content with.

I thought Megatron could at least vie for the "greatest after Rice" distinction (for which there's currently a highly debatable scrum), but this was a key year to distance himself from that pack and the injury has pretty much prevented that from being the case.

You dont think Russell Wilson is on the trajectory to being one of the greatest ever? In his second season he won a superbowl and he just became the first QB to pass for 300 and rush for 100 in the same game.

Peters isn't even in the team picture with Anthony Munoz. Watt maybe but lets see longevity. The league is watered down so most of the players today aren't as versatile and are more specialists. Watt is a throwback to the play anywhere era. Brady, Manning and Rogers is in the team photo. His gamefilm is almost a how to video

my only recollection of Munoz was getting totally embarrassed by bruce smith repeatedly, maybe that biases my thinking

This may sound like complete bull ****, but I think there's a difference between "best" ever and "greatest" ever.

IMO "best" narrows it down to top-5, and no, Russel Wilson will not make that list, in spite of his 50 yard rush on Sunday. Also, I think it's been well documented to this point that WILSON did not win the super bowl, their defense and their special teams did. And it was their rushing game that got them there.

Will he go down as one of the "greatest" ever? As in like top-30 of all time? May be. May be even top-20. MAY BE.

QBS: Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Luck, Wilson

RBS: McCoy

WRS: Calvin, D Thomas, Green

TE: Gates, Graham.

DT: Watt

DE: V Miller, D Ware,

LBS: Willis

CBS: Sherman, Revis

Safeties: None....were really in a dead era as far as elite safeties go.

Special Teams: Hester

Head Coach: Belichick, Couglin

I know its early, but is M Dareus entering the DT conversation as well?

Sherman is not even close to being one of the best cornerbacks ever. Could even argue that he may not be very good if Earl Thomas and Cam Chancellor were not there in secondary.

Its the guys 3rd year as an NFL player, the question asked: "who are candidates for best ever?" Dismissing Wilson is ignorant, hes built himself a nice little resume so far, and yes, hes got a long ways to go, but i think hes on that trajectory.

for clarity's sake, purpose of thread was your interpretation of "greatest" ever. in reality "best" and "greatest" are singular terms, and if one wanted to use either to identify a category with more than one entry, would need to preface with "one of the"

okay, then clarify: we talking top 3 or 5 or top 25?

This is a very loaded question, as for a lot of young stars, it is too early to tell. Russell Wilson as noted above, could be a great one. He is off to a phenomenal start, but he could quickly blow himself too. One person who was not mentioned above that truly is an arguable candidate is Shane Lechler.

Oh and of course - Garrison Sanborn.

i think andrew luck and tyron smith are just getting going too. both going to have niice careers.

dont sleep on aaron rodgers either - sat on the bench for years so he wont lead any career total stats, but he does things every week that no other qb in this league can do. right now, there is no one better.

oh and toss earl thomas in there too.

joe thomas for lineman. ty hilton is gonna put up some crazy numbers playing with luck for the next decade. He's not rice obviously unless he plays for another 20 years but he can come in at number 2 if he stays healthy. Calvin just can't stay healthy but his numbers will be great but his td's aren't there.

Calm down Mrs. Wilson. You're a huge fan, we get it. If you're going to take the < 25yr olds who are 'candidates with a long ways to go' that literally, there are dozens of other guys that could be in the discussion as well. Some more deserving on his own team, like Earl Thomas.

I like the topic!! Manning, Brady, Hester and Vinateri are the ones to consider. I think that Rodgers and Megatron could end up there as well. I am not going to consider anyone with 5 years or less experience. Charles Woodson is a name that hasn't been mentioned that is worthy or consideration as is Antonio Gates. I am not sure that either of those 2 are the BEST but probably top 5 guys that are 1st ballot HOFers. Champ Bailey as well (if you count him).
