K-9 Posted October 11, 2014 Share Posted October 11, 2014 There is, however, a correlation to spending smartly and success, which is something the Bills have not been able to do in the last 15 years. The last couple have been a little better (although no one is perfect of course and there have been some blunders). The most interesting element of the new regime, to me, will be who negotiates the contracts. Does Overdorf stay. Does Whaley take over as being solely responsible for how much we may FA and our own guys. Nothing will probably change for at least a year and maybe not until the end of next season, but it will be interesting. For too long, the Bills have had non-football guys deciding how much football players should be paid. It's not as bad as it used to be but it still exists to a degree. If they are smart, they either keep Overdorf or find someone else to be the cap specialist. I think there will be less of a budgetary concern in contract negotiations, but there has to be an eye on the cap relevant to its dynamic nature. You need a guy who understands cap ramifications several years down the road as well as tomorrow. And yes, spending "smartly" often means you'll be successful. Ha ha, at the time those contracts were brutal. The Bills have done well the last few years in FA. They have spent wisely (Graham, Spikes, Dixon) and even the big ticket guy (Mario) has panned out. FA is like the draft in that when you swing and miss it hurts. Big FA contracts are like 1st round picks in that if you miss you are in trouble. Yes, if he has a little less responsibility and his job is as a capologist more than the ultimate negotiator, I would agree. I think the GM needs to be the guy making decisions on how much a guy is worth, and should know everything there is to know about the cap because that is essential to putting together a team. A cap expert will become more important for the Bills because they are likely to be approaching it more in the future. I don't expect them to start crazy overpaying like Daniel Snyder, but signing more of our own free agents and a couple of key cogs will put us up against it soon. Yeah, agreed, although Chris Williams was a head scratcher. Keith Rivers is so-so so far (although he hasn't been a liability when e has been out there so I guess I am somewhat pleased overall with him. It may very well lead to success. But there is still no correlation between doing that and having success. Snyder opened the vaults for 3 big name coaches over the last 15 years and it ended in disaster every time (Spurrier, Gibbs II, Shanahan).
