On January 10 the Oscar nominations will be announced and every movie that has had platform releases in limited areas will be expanding. For those not interested in the Oscar race, the month of January will offer them a distraction with movies of a lesser nature, as the infamous Garbage Season of movies begins. In years past this would be the time of year when studios release their less than spectacular fare. Lately though, movies at this time have had some big names attached, and this month is no exception. However, whether this equates to good movies, is up for debate.

One movie in particular that has plenty of big names is "Gangster Squad". A chronicle of the LAPD's fight to keep East Coast Mafia types out of Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s. Starring Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Emma Stone & Sean Penn.

Mark Wahlberg & Russell Crowe star in "Broken City". An ex-cop trailing the wife of New York City's mayor finds himself immersed in a larger scandal. Also starring Catherine Zeta-Jones & Kyle Chandler.

Following in the footsteps of recent fairy tale made movies comes, "Hansel & Gretal: Witch Hunters". In this dark spin on the fairy tale, siblings Hansel and Gretel are a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. Starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Peter Stormare & Famke Janssen.

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars alongside Johnny Knoxville in "The Last Stand". The leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff. Also starring Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega & John Patrick Amedori.

Jason Statham stars in "Parker". A thief with a unique code of professional ethics is double-crossed by his crew and left for dead. Assuming a new disguise and forming an unlikely alliance with a woman on the inside, he looks to hijack the score of the crew's latest heist. Also starring Jennifer Lopez, Michael Chiklis & Nick Nolte.

"Movie 43" is an ensemble comedy intertwining different tales. Starring Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, Richard Gere, Halle Berry, Uma Thurman, Liev Schrieber, Terrence Howard, Gerard Butler, Kristen Bell, Elizabeth Banks, Leslie Bibb, Kate Bosworth, Josh Duhamel, Anna Faris, Johnny Knoxville, Justin Long, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Grace-Moretz, Sean William Scott, & Jason Sudeikis.

Jessica Chastain stars in "Mama". Annabel and Lucas are faced with the challenge of raising his young nieces that were left alone in the forest for 5 years.... but how alone were they? Also starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, & Isabelle Nelisse.

In "Texas Chainsaw 3D", A young woman travels to Texas to collect an inheritance; little does she know that an encounter with a chainsaw-wielding killer is part of the reward. Starring Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, & Trey Songz.

Finally, in "A Haunted House", Malcolm and Keisha move into their dream home, but soon learn a demon also resides there. When Kisha becomes possessed, Malcolm - determined to keep his sex life on track - turns to a priest, a psychic, and a team of ghost-busters for help. Starring Marlon Wayans, Essence Atkins, Alanna Ubach & Nick Swardson.

While I haven't seen any advance reviews of "Gangster Squad", and it is normally the kind of movie I would look forward to, the trailers I have seen kind of scare me a little...too many good people involved for it to be a dog...right? I think Sean Penn is a terrific actor, but he looks ridiculous in the previews. Hope my reservations are unfounded...

When it comes to movies released in January: Buyer Beware.

Scanning over that list, the phrase garbage time sure is dead on. I'm a bit surprised on Gangster Squad though. When trailers started to pop up for that one a while back, it seemed like they were pushing it pretty hard. I guess it didn't turn out to be the movie they were expecting.

The movie was scheduled for release in September, but it (and the trailer) included a scene during which somebody shoots up a movie theater through the screen.

After the Aurora shooting, theaters dropped the trailer and the cast/crew re-shot that portion of the film, pushing the release date back to January.

I did not know that.

I still wonder why Warner Bros. decided to go with a January release, if they didn't think they had something terrible on their hands.

Thanks Mark.

Just forwarded it.

:)

Your welcome.

i get that movie watchers would really hate it if the scene was in the movie, but man, I hate even more that things like this are taken out of movies. Wtf people!!! We can't decipher the difference between the 2?

In future news, all movie and video game violence is banned because it might give sick, demented individuals ideas for how to kill people in the future.
