What is the BIGGEST camp battle? Surprise cuts?

Recommended Posts

2nd receiver position: there's so many people that can take the job that it has to be the biggest position battle.

My surprise cut is Edwards.

Side note: Maybe its just because he's from Buffalo but I really hope Roosevelt doesn't get cut. He's pretty fast and he's making some big plays when he's on the field the last two years as far as I've seen. I think he makes good depth at the WR and could possibly be a deep threat but there must be some reason why he isn't in there more.

EDIT: I haven't seen this on here and I'm gonna here about this but I want to see what happens with the Wild Bill/Buffalo/whatever-its-called and see what the coaches have done for it and if Brad Smith can handle it.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. The Bills know Potter isn't polished enough to trust on FGs; if he makes the roster it will be solely for his ability to boom KOs, and they'll develop him into Lindell's eventual replacement.

Moorman, on the other hand, is in for a battle...

for fear of stoking a 10 page thread about punters, I'll keep this brief. I recognize that Moorman has a challenge this preseason. However, I do see that Lindell isn't as safe as some would think.

I think the D line is going to be interesting. I think the Bills are going to be more versatile with their fronts than people think. If Merriman actually is healthy, Mark Anderson and Mario all have OLB experience. All of the DTs have 1,3,5 experience too. Versatility wins in the NFL now a days and teams are using way more 5 man fronts to beat the spread teams. It's going to be fun to watch the battle but I can't see Gilbert making it to the opening day roster. Troup and Carrington have been complete disappoints too. It's gonna be fun to watch, that's for sure.

This is the only article I could find in a quick search, but I know there was another one in which DeHaven essentially said there's no way Lindell would be replaced on FGs by Potter this season. Regardless, the linked article is entirely about what Potter can do on KOs and in no way suggests Lindell is in a "competition" this season.

You do recall they JUST re-signed Lindell this offseason, right?

kickers are cheap and easy to dispose of. But don't take anything a coach says at full value in offseason.

When you have a moment, I'd like to hear your explanation for why the Bills signed Lindell to a 4-yr extension in February.

Between Edwards and Johnson one will be cut. It is the money in the end. Two good pro's, one will survive. Toughest cut of camp IMO.

Between Troup and Carrington one will be cut.

McGee doesn't make the team if he is not 100%. If he is 100% but McKelvin shows something this summer, McGee gets the axe. Second toughest cut of camp.

I don't see McGee getting cut. They need veteran leadership at the CB position and that's more valuable than anything McKelvin will bring to the table or not bring to the table. You cut McGee and that leaves you 2 rookies, a 2nd year CB who missed a good chunk of the season last year and a bust. I don't see it.

I'd like to see these positions go by the way of the dodo bird... FB, H-Back, Wildcat QB, Kick off specialist. How much field time do these players really get on our team? With our supposed new found depth do we really want to lose 4 players to keep players at these positions?

D-line and WR are the 2 biggest positional battles. I could see surprise cuts coming from both these positions.

Biggest camp battle is getting to training camp.

I should be successful every afternoon this year, though.

Johnson will enter training camp in the best shape of his life. He tweeted about it yesterday, saying, "Good news for me and the Bills. Bad news for the AFC." I'm betting he stays.

Carrington has done ZERO TO IMPRESS ME, i cant see him keeping a roster spot.

Troup may be serviceable and i agree with you there (this is his last chance to show it though).

I dont know anything about Gilbert (best case scenario for him sounds like practice squad).

I like Heard though.

So Id cut Carrington, Gilbert, and Dwan if it were up to me. Spencer Johnson knows the defense, Heard has something in the tank, and i think you gotta give Carrington atleast one more year (if hes injured hes gone next year). I guess this is a good problem to have

I believe that I saw something on the Bills website that said Troup is questionable on whether he will still be able to play in the NFL as he is coming off back surgery. That may be part of the reason there are so many DT's on the roster. they want to keep Troup but if his back is messed up still he may be IR or released on injury.

Look to see Brad Smith in the wildcat at least 4 or 5 plays a game from what the coaches are saying in interviews. Vince Young will not be used in the Wild Cat has also been stated rather matter of factly by Nix and Gailey.

Great topic. I see several key camp battles, some of which have already been discussed.

DL cuts: I think the Bills will keep 9 or 10. Mario, Anderson, Kelsay, Merriman, Dareus, and Kyle are locks. I believe Edwards and Carrington will make it. It's wide open for the remaining one or two spots, with Johnson, Troup, Heard, Gilbert, and Batten all in the mix.

LB corps: The starters are set, but who do they keep as backups? If they keep 6, I've got to believe Carder and Bradham make it, which leaves only one opening for White, McKillop, Moats, and Eddins.

2nd WR: The players are raving about Jones; it's his job to lose. Graham is going to be a situational guy who will contribute more in the 2nd half of the season. I can't wait to see more of Easley in game action. The cuts will be very interesting.

Backup QB: Everyone "wants" Young to win the job, and it's hard for me to imagine him not coming out on top given his athletic talent.

3rd RB: Johnny White or Tashard Choice? Choice hasn't impressed me and I like White's versatility; the head injury set him back a bit last year.

FB vs. H-Back: McIntyre or Dickerson (or both)?

How many TEs: Chandler and Smith are locks; will Gucci Onabagel crack the roster?

Starting LT: Glenn vs. Hairston. Subplot: Pears vs. Hairston at RT. I wouldn't be shocked to see Hairston take the starting job on the right side.

Punter: Moorman vs. Powell. The FSU product was not brought in as camp fodder; he's no joke.

Specialty K: Will they really keep Potter?

----------------

I just love this time of year. My surprise cut of the summer is Moorman.

Ok, I think the most important and biggest battle is the one for wide receiver. Not just for the number "so called number two" spot but just to make the team. Although a lot of folks on this board disagree, I have a feeling that Jones was on his way last year to establishing himself (People forget that he didn't get much of a shot his rookie season so last year was his first as a starter and he was doing that without OTA's, etc..) just as he got hurt. Still there will be an intense battle for his spot and to make the team.

I agree that the battle of the punters could very well lead to the surprise cut of camp. Brian Moorman is everything you would want in a player both on the field and off but he is aging and this kid Powell really seems to have a leg!

Another one to watch is the Kirk Morrison linebacking spot. I just have a feeling that Nigel Bradham could be out there on the field if not on opening day then a few weeks into the season.

Like most posters are saying the DL back up's will be a war and the Bills will cut someone who will be picked up immediately causing everyone to say we should never have cut him.

Finally there's Dickerson versus McIntyre. The hype is all on Dickerson but McIntyre is such a solid ST player ...

So ... potential surprise cuts: MOORMAN - EASLEY - DICKERSON - MORRISON

Young vs thigpen

This is probably the most important battle in camp. Arguably DT and #2 WR are just picking from a deep pool. We really do not have a proven #2 QB and the player selected is highly likely to see the field. QB's are highly likely to be hurt so a proven backup is critical. Young wins on talent but Thigpen has been in the system longer. My guess is that Thigpen wins out because Gailey is more into the cerebral aspect of the position.

Your stubbornness on Lindell is silly.

There's zero chance he's getting cut.

The Bills have said as much both in the media and with the checkbook.

We have deep talent at WR finally, although some are untested but with

Roosevelt

Nelson

Johnson

Jones

Hagan

Graham

Aiken

Easley

--it wouldn't shock me if Jones gets cut, he's small, constantly hurt and has bad hands

Jones seems to get more playing time than some of the others. I think Roosevelt and Aiken are goners. It's kind of a shame since Roosevelt is a Buffalo guy, and Aiken looked good in pre-season last year, but there are too many guys competing for a limited number of roster spots. Oh, and Brad Smith is available as a back-up if necessary.
