My Uncles name was Tommy Colella. He played RB and DB and punted.

He was from Albion New York. My Aunt is STILL alive at 93 and STILL gets pension from the NFL. Crazy

i have a old roster from a '48 game between the bills and brooklyn dodgers, but he's not listed. actually, it looks like he played for detroit, both the cleveland rams and browns, as well as the bills during his career (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Colella).

he must have had some great stories from those days.

He played for the cleveland Rams and Browns until 1948 and played the 1949 season with Buffalo.

You gotta see all the memorabilia in their basement.. lots of old pictures autographed balls from the 40s etc.

He was best friends with Lou Saban and knew Ralph Wilson very well. Ralph even showed up to an event honoring him in Buffalo about 10 years ago. He was dead but my Aunt was there to make a speech and accept the award.

Those Bills were part of the defunct All America Football Conf. The NFL merged 3 franchises, SF, CLE, and BAL even though Buffalo was the best-supported team of the 3, and Buffalo was the 14th largest city in the USA at that time. (650K)

If you believe the Wikipedia article, George Halas himself nixed Buffalo personally because of our weather and the city's rep for being "culturally backward."

10 years later Ralph Wilson assumed the Bills name for his AFL team. Also the orignal Bills were first called the Bisons, but changed to the Bills in 1949.

Halas had it out for Buffalo as a city as he was hated for his role in the Chicago Staleys stealing the 1921 NFL Championship away from the Buffalo All Americans

Ralph didn't 'take over' anything.

Paging KRC... History lesson paging KRC.. <crackling over PA system>

Since I am being paged, I thought I would answer some of the questions here:

Who owned the team back then and how long did they last before Ralph took over?

Jim Breuil owned the team. Ralph had no affiliation with the team.

James Breuil was the owner and they lasted for three seasons

Four seasons.

As some of the Buffalo Pro-football historians will mention around here...we got screwed...royally. When the league folded around 1950 the NFL took the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts and, by all accounts, should have taken the Buffalo Bills - a reasonably successful and very well supported franchise with many national supporters...

...so of course they took San Francisco.

Cleveland and SF were always going to be absorbed into the NFL when the AAFC folded. The issue was the third team. Buffalo put together a good presentation, but they got screwed. George Preston Marshall did not want Baltimore, but he changed his mind when the NFL tossed a lot of money his way.

Not correct. I have no idea where that came from. If you want to blame anyone, you need to blame Bert Bell. He promised Buffalo that he would provide an NFL schedule with Buffalo included when Buffalo made their presentation to the other NFL owners. Bell never did that. Dan Reeves (owner of the LA Rams) said that he would not vote until a schedule was put together. Reeves' vote killed Buffalo's bid.

They changed to the Bills after the 1946 season.

So Wikipedia suggests that the AAFC Bills we're actually named after a popular Buffalo barbershop quartet of the era (of whom was named after the frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody). It is also suggested that Ralph got his name from the AAFC team. So, are our Bills an homage to a defunct singing group too?

Nope. It was a write-in contest. Breuil owned Frontier Oil. The winner of the contest made the connection==>Frontier Oil==>Wild West==>Buffalo==>Buffalo Bill Cody. Ralph named his team in honor of the AAFC Buffalo Bills.

Shameless plug: The Original Buffalo Bills

Halas voted against it because he did not want a 14-team league. Reeves, Tony Morabito, Halas and Ray Bennigsen (Chicago Cardinals) voted no to Buffalo's admission into the NFL. Halas did not have it in for Buffalo. According to the rules of the time, he won the 1921 title legitimately. Whether it was ethical is another story. There was no official end to the season back then. Therefore, he continued to play until he had the necessary record. Buffalo's problem was that they scheduled two games in subsequent days, with the last game being against Chicago. Stupid move on their part.
