I don't think the Colts are looking for a new QB yet, unless Manning is never going to come back. Just because he is out for a year doesn't mean they need to draft his replacement. The guy is only 35, and clearly still one of the greats. Granted, his run to beat Favre in the history books for most consecutive games played just went down the drain, but he should still have at LEAST 5 more years to play.

This question was discussed on Mike and Mike this AM. They both agreed that, if the Colts had the chance to pick Luck next year, that they wouldn't take him! They said that, if Manning was coming back next season, they would "ride him for a few more years and draft someone they could put on the field right away" with the number one pick.

These two are complete morons.

I think they're right. Colts are paying manning too much not to win now. If have the #1 pick and someone wants luck, I see them trading it for multiple picks.

Otherwise provided manning's contact allows it and they want luck, the move would be to draft luck and trade manning.

You're not making sense. The Colts will be paying Manning not to win for the rest of the season.

Even if, by some miracle, Manning is able to play next year, he's got one or two seasons left in him at most (over 35 and coming off a major injury). They are stuck paying him a ton of cash no matter what happens. Luck will be available at a fraction of the cost and will be ready to step in when Manning finally disintegrates.

If you have the ability to pick the next Manning, why on earth wouldn't you take it??

Moving on, the Colts will still finish at or near the top of the AFC South - with or w/out Peyton Manning - but they could very well be in the 'Andrew Luck Sweepstakes', depending on how bad Andy and Stanford tank this season.

That's a good point. Everyone assumes luck won't do a locker. Heck maybe the best thing for him would be an early season ending injury. Didn't hurt Bradford!

Because if they're committed to winning it again with manning they will need to surround him with better players. Sitting luck does nothing for them now. You know for sure manning can't be traded ? If they're really in love with luck that's the move to make.

Manning has been surrounded with "better players" for a decade. Next year's draft picks aren't going to bring him another ring.

Anyway, Manning has been treated, but he won't be the same. He is a t the twilight of his career--tha can't be argued at this point. And that being the case, why pass on a guy who can replace him for the next 12 years or so?

As GM, you would swap for a number of picks that will become significant starters most likely after Manning has retired?? Makes no sense.

Youre not reading what Im saying. Im saying IF they are committed to winning it all w/ Manning when he comes back, THEN they should trade the Luck pick (assuming they have it) for more picks to surround Manning.

IF they have the Luck pick and want to move on from Manning, THEN Id trade Manning to someone like a Miami who think they can contend now with a QB, and surround Luck w/ better players.

Think 9ers .... Montana .... Young

I read it pretty clear--you are under the impression that Manning will come back next season good as ever, the Colts would trade a number 1 pick for a group of other rookies ("better players") who would immediately contribute and lead Manning to a possible SB win.

OK.

Lets say that manning's out a year. Comes back looks sharp warming up and gets clean bill of health from several doctors. Don't you think a miami who believe they have all the pieces in place but a QB would take him a heartbeat? Offering high draft value? He'd have a good oline and some nice toys named bush and marshal to throw to. No brainer IMO

Bush and Marshall? ah, yeah.. The Dolphins are not a Peyton Manning away from a SB run.

Anyway, even if Manning was on the market, his glass neck and advanced age would seriously temper any offer of picks.
