Roster by Position

The Bills' site has this article about position groups going into camp. My first thought is that they have Kelsay listed as an OLB. Didn't everyone see last year that he can't play that position? He is serviceable at DE, but he can't play OLB.

So, we're just going to add 17 more players -14 if we sign our big 3 FA's. I appreciate seeing this as I'm only hearing what a cluster**** the quick FA timeframe will be. Considering we're typically busy in the UDFA market (I'm glad we drafted Jasper), there's probably 6-7 more coming from that area already targeted. This only leaves a handful of NFL FA's to consider and I'm sure our 'Board' is set and we'll be in the immediate hunt for whomever the staff covets.

I can't wait to get this thing going!!

If the teams have to be at 90 players in something like three weeks time, and also need to spend X amount of money, there will be two main pools and a third smaller pool of players from which to get the players we'll need; Free Agency, Undrafted Free Agents, and trades.

A lot of teams are going to go out and bring in a bunch of Free Agents - like Washington always does, and probably the teams with new coaches, like Oakland, Denver, Carolina, etc. If I'm Buffalo, I'd target a couple of Veteran Free Agents who I know will come in and absolutely make our team better, not just for this year, but for the next 3-5 years. I'd overspend a bit, if need be, to get them. Then, instead of spending a bunch of money on mid-level Free Agents (Cornell Green types) I'd save that money, which will help balance out overpaying for the good F.A.'s, and I'd take the remaining surplus and spend it on the best UDFA's out there - guys like Devlin and that Linebacker who had bone marrow trouble, guys who other teams will be going after. We overpay for them, it still wont compare to the contracts given to mid-level veterans. Bring in a bunch of UDFA's and we're sure to find a few gems, as we always seem to do.

With that strategy, we'll have added guys who not only will be bodies for camp, but who will start or who otherwise stand a chance at being good - instead of just getting fillers. And whatever is left over, we should extend the contracts of guys we know are going to be good for a long time.

No post.

Astro, you think Ray Edwards is a good fit for the 3-4. He's 260. Or because you think we're gonna playing a lot of hybrid that includes 4 man fronts? He's gonna be getting paid good money, I'm not quite sure he's worth it to the bills, due to our scheme.

I like thigpen, leach, boss (rather have miller though) and clabo. Resigning Poz, flo and whitner would be great as well. We'd be deep at every position, minus TE. But that's 6 big contracts we'd be paying, (boss, clabo, Edwards, Poz, flo, whitner). I see us adding 3. Poz, flo and clabo/TE would be fine by me.

In reply to Astro's post - is that a dream scenario? Clabo is one of the best, if not the best, RT available. Boss is one of the top 3 TE's. Whitner and Poz are somewhere near the top of their positions as FA's. Leach - that would be nice, and I overlooked him as a possibility. I've got to say, I'd be delighted if all that were to come to fruition. But, I just don't see the Bills going after a large number of tier 1 and 2 free agents. I see it much more likely (although I'd love it otherwise, as you suggest) that they pay big money and make a splash for one or two very recognizable guys at positions of need - my guess RT and TE.

to newera, agree, d.whit is gone, ray doesn't fit and i see him going to ATL or Philly. I don't see us going after a FB, they seem to like McIntyre as do I. Boss would be a nice get as Miller is going to get paid big time and I don't see us giving it to him.

Vonta Leach is hammer but I doubt FO will go after him, Whitner can go we have enough safties and Batten is just not a good fit inside he will do way better on the outside and win one of the OLB spots.

The above post is my dream scenario. We can't sign all of them; just my proposal.

I like Boss b/c of his blocking ability in-line, and we already have good pass-catching TE's (actually our TE's have the highest thrown to/caught percentage in the NFL). They are just underused as receivers.

I like two FB's on the roster especially in Nov-Dec.

And I like Devlin. Read this:

I don't know Astro...I think I'm in the "say no to Pat Devlin" camp as well. I just remember watching him at the combine, and I've seen some of his game film. I recall thinking to myself...I think my wife throws a better ball than this kid. Seriously!

Give me Billy Volek, Seneca Wallace, or Tyler Thigpen in free agency...then bring in UDFA Ben Chappell from Indiana. That would be my dream scenario.

I'd be happy with Thigpen/Chappell. I thought about Vick, but the chemistry is so good on this team right now that they don't need a distraction at QB, no matter if Gailey can work his magic. Lombardo (NFL Network?) said Vick's optimum spot to land would be in BUF with Gailey.
