Salary Cap for 2011 - Bills are 40-50 mil under

One of the expected outcomes of any new NFL-NFLPA collective bargaining agreement is the re-institution of the NFL salary cap, because of it's value to overall league parity. We can safely estimate that the 2011 NFL salary cap (or 2012 NFL salary cap if there is no 2011 season) at somewhere between $130-$140 million per team.

The Bills are currently at approx $88 million for 2011.

The Bills will be $40 - 50 million under the cap.

They will probably be required to spend most of it.

Don't bet your house that there will be a salary cap when and if a new CBA is agreed to. A year ago when it was determined that they would play the 2010 season with no cap, most so called experts on ESPN, NFL Network, etc. said you would never see a cap again, at least in the form that they had it. Even if there is with the new CBA, nobody (outside of the people in the meetings, and that isn't guaranteed) knows what the cap level will be, so how can you know how far under it we are?

As far as the numbers, they at least in part explain why this franchise has been so bad for so long. Almost $11 million to Merriman and McGee, who combined might have played 3 games last year. Over 2 and a half million to Hangartner, who has been a disaster since they signed him. 1.2 Million for Reggie Corner, why is he even still here? More than 5.5 million to Kelsay, while not as bad as alot of his haters on this board think he is, still that much for him, playing out of position?

Every team will have money to spend but we will have major money to spend, finding the right players to come to a losing team in a city with a poor reputation of weather will be hard. Money has a way of overcoming those obstacles though, a lot of it.

It's in the players best interest to have a salary cap. It's the rising tide that lifts all boats. It forces teams to spend close to the cap, keeps markets somewhat competitive and provides some financial stability for the league, which is good for the NFL for both the owners and players.

Teams like the Jets and Cowboys who are so ridiculously leveraged with stadiums, can't afford to hire everybody, so you need to have a mechanism to spread that opportunity around. If you are a top shelf player, you want competing offers from a variety of teams, not just one or two.

Exactly, people just do not understand what is going on here. The players actually want a cap reinstated. Be carefull what you wish for. The no cap last year was not the windfall that the players thought it was going to be. With a cap comes a floor & it was force teams such as the bills to bring their team salary up to that floor. No cap means small market teams such as the Bills could go as low as they want & like you alluded to the 6 or 7 teams that are willing spend can not hire everybody.

It's just where Ralph likes it. If we sign a starting caliber RT or a TE along with poz we'll be lucky imo. We'll most likely sign 2 Cornell green type player, someone that started for another team because they were the best option on a bad team, for 3 million and pass on a good player for 6 mill.

The Bills can circumvent the cap rather easily, if it is re-instituted. All they have to do is release some guys and their cap figure will be applied towards the cap, even though they don't really get paid a single cent by the Bills. This strategy was utilized often by the Bills' front office when there was a cap. We always had dead money going towards our cap figure.

Another way to avoid spending up to the floor of the cap is to heavily front load contracts.

The salary cap is a crock.

the salary cap in not a crock....it is the single greatest factor in parity and competitiveness....having said that, the league and players are looking to tighten up what you would call loopholes or shananigans:

In previous seasons with a salary cap, there had never been a requirement that clubs had to spend a minimum amount of cash. The salary cap floor applied only to the salary cap — not cash spent – and thus included “dead money” including prorated money from bonuses paid in earlier years of player contracts and money that was accelerated from future years for players no longer with that club.

Under last week’s proposal, such “dead money” would not be counted in the minimum cash guarantee ensuring that actual cash would be paid to players each season.

You are leaving out one big piece of information. The Packers, Steelers, Cowgirls, and even the Pats all spent less than the Bills.

Its not like the entire league is at 100% of salary cap and the Bills are cheap.

The Salary Cap in the NFL hasn't been like the Salary cap in the NBA the last 5 years or so.

Teams aren't spending up to the cap.

1)McGee was hurt, yes, but has been a good investment considering his play over the years. Hopefully he is healthy and can rebound to solidify what is a thin position depth-wise.

2)Merriman was paid like 2mil last year, the new contract was signed in the off-season. So you're wrong.

3) Hangartner hasn't been horrible like you state. He's a 2mil per season interior lineman, not an all-pro making 6mil a year.

4)Reggie Corner, see depth statement. Least of my worries.

I hope that's true. Then we really have to spend some loot!
