August Movies: The Other Guys, The Expendables & Scott Pilgrim Vs.

It has been an odd Summer Season of movies this year. Iron Man 2 started everything with a bang, but Robin Hood & Prince of Persia appeared to grind eveything to a halt, as box office numbers began to plummet, making many movie studios nervous. Even franchises like Shrek, and Sex & the City underwhelmed moviegoers, and despite a year of hype The Last Airbender also did not live up to expectations. Thanks to the threequels of Toy Story & Twilight, the surprise smash hit of Karate Kid, the popular Despicable Me, and the curiousity factor paying off for Inception, movie studios were able to save face from this summer being a total disaster. Needless to say movie studios can not wait for the summer of 2011 to get here as Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part II & Transformers 3 are on the schedule. As for now the month of August has arrived bringing a close to this summer and with it maybe, just maybe a few more surprise hits are in store for us.

The somewhat unusual teaming up of Mark Whalberg & Will Ferrell highlight the cop comedy "The Other Guys". Detectives Allen Gamble and Terry Hoitz might not be New York City's finest, but when they discover a path that leads directly to one the city's biggest criminals, they seize the opportunity to become supercops. The promotion for this movie has been good as there have been few comedies this summer, and people are always on the look out for a good laugh. Also starring Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson & Michael Keaton.

Looking to tap into the major testosterone crowd comes "The Expendables". Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Coutre, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke & Bruce Willis. Throw in a cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and you would be wondering if only they could have made this movie 10 years ago. The fearless Barney Ross leads a team of mercenaries on a mission to South America, where their objective -- to overthrow a ruthless dictator -- is more dangerous than the men realize.

Receiving the tagline, "An epic of epic epicness" is "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World". Layabout musician Scott Pilgrim (Cera) falls for the new girl in town, Ramona Flowers (Winstead), but in order to win her heart, he must defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends. Starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Jason Schwartzman & Brandon Routh.

Offering counterprogramming to all the action is the return of Julia Roberts in "Eat, Pray, Love". Happily married Elizabeth Gilbert takes a right turn in her life by enduring a painful divorce and proceeding to take a round-the-world journey of self-enlightenment and fulfillment. Also starring Javier Bardem & Viola Davis.

Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman star in "The Switch". An unmarried 40-year-old woman turns to a turkey baster in order to become pregnant. Seven years later, she reunites with her best friend, who has been living with a secret: he replaced her preferred sperm sample with his own. Also starring Jeff Goldblum, Juliette Lewis & Patrick Wilson.

Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi & Gabriel Macht star in "Middle Men". In 1995, businessman Jack Harris partners with two enterprising troublemakers to sell adult entertainment over the fledgling Internet. Also starring James Caan & Kelsey Grammer.

An unexpected horror re-make comes to the big screen in the form of "Piranha 3D". A tremor under the surface of Lake Victoria unleashes scores of prehistoric piranhas, an event which rallies the local sheriff who will risk everything to save her townsfolk. Starring Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O' Connell, Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Eli Roth, Dina Meyer & Richard Dreyfuss.

In "Takers", A hard-boiled detective gets in between a group of bank robbers and their plan to make away with a $20 million bounty. Starring Matt Dillon, Paul Walker & Idris Elba.

"Going the Distance" is a romantic comedy centered on a guy and a gal who try to keep their love alive as they shuttle back and forth between Chicago and Los Angeles to see one another. Starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Christina Applegate & Ron Livingston.

Emma Thompson is back in "Nanny McPhee Returns". Nanny McPhee arrives to help a harried young mother, Mrs. Green, who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. With Mrs. Green's children waging a personal war with their two spoiled cousins, Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach the kids five important new lessons. Also starring Ralph Fiennes, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Maggie Smith.

In "Step Up 3D", The kids from the Maryland School of the Arts head to Paris for an international dance competition, but when Moose misses the flight home, he is inducted into the city's underground dance scene, which is about to have its own contest. The case of a stolen routine finds Moose looking to bring some of his friends back to the City of Lights for the event. Starring Sharni Vinson.

In "The Last Exorcism", A troubled evangelical minister agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew, where a possessed young brings him face to face with the devil himself. Starring Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell.

In "Lottery Ticket", Over the Fourth of July weekend, Kevin Carson has to protect his new prize possession -- a lottery ticket worth $370 million -- from his greedy and conniving neighbors. Starring Bow Wow & Brandon T. Jackson.

Finally in "Vampires Suck", A spoof of vampire-themed movies, where teenager Becca finds herself torn between two boys. As she and her friends wrestle with a number of different dramas, everything comes to a head at their prom. Starring Ken Jeong.

Wife and I were wondering last night how Wahlberg got roped into that. Did they tell him "You're going to be in a cop buddy comedy with Samuel L Jackson," to which he said "Cool! Sign me up!", and then couldn't ditch the contract when they paired him with Ferrell?

That movie looks great, in a cheesy-'80s action flick sense.

Seriously? Seriously??? They're that short on ideas? What's next, a "Manos: The Hands Of Fate" reboot?

I know what you mean, but it looks like they are having fun with "Piranha 3D". They obviously have no ambition other than to make it a creature feature/b-movie. It definitely has a Tremors feel to it.

You must admit that getting the likes of Christopher Plummer, Ving Rhames & Richard Dreyfuss in this movie is definitely inspired.

If it's got a "Tremors" feel to it, and not a "Tremors IV" feel to it, then I reserve judgement.

But of all the movies to remake...

I can't wait to see the Expendables. He's no Clint Eastwood (whose films over the past 10-12 years have often been brilliant, IMO), but Stallone's recent films have been very enjoyable for me. I loved the last Rocky film...thought Rambo was immensely entertaining and completely badass...and from what I've seen of the trailers, this one looks to be pretty fun, too. Can't wait!

I agree. Killer Fish would have been a much better choice. After all it had Lee Majors.

lol, that's gotta be the laziest, least inspired movie title in history

A blah ending to a blah season. The Expendables is the only one I'd consider checking out, but I'll probably wait until it hits cable.

The Expendables does look like fun, but keep an eye on Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. I'm not a fan of Michael Cera, but the movie does look funny.

It is sad that it has been an underwhelming summer season, even though we got great stuff like Toy Story 3 & Inception. I was hoping with a summer that had a little more original titles than sequels it would make for a great time. Alas, it did not work out that way.

Never fear Shrader, here is what you have to look forward to in Summer 2011: Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Green Lantern, The Hangover 2, Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, Cars 2: World Grand Prix, Cowboys & Aliens, Harry Potter & The Deathly Hollows Part II, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Transformers 3.

Whew!!! That's a lot of Tentpole titles for one season. I hope that gives you some hope, shrader.

I think most of us are beyond the target age group for that one.

Next summer does look interesting though. I'm sure most of what you listed will turn out to be garbage, but fun, which is fine with me. Hopefully nothing gets pushed back.
