With the bulk of the scouting just getting underway and many names being brought to the forefront who weren’t exactly on the tip of anyone’s tongues when the collegiate season started, this new segment called Under the Radar will explore just what scouts find attractive about certain prospects who may be available beyond the glamour rounds of the draft. This year’s draft is loaded with 3-4 personnel and the small schools aren’t excluded from that conversation as Arthur Moats of James Madison has shown during his workouts. Moats impressed at the NFL Scouting Combine with his compact 6’0” 246lbs. frame and incredible explosion packed into his lower body. That was further confirmed with his 4.66 time in the 40 yard dash which ranked third among defensive ends and his 36.5 inch vertical jump also showed just how powerful he is in his lower half. He showed great burst off of the line of scrimmage beating offensive tackles to the outside repeatedly during his days in college. For such a small player he plays with fantastic leverage and uses his hands well to gain the advantage on would be blockers. The questions are quite legitimate when it comes to Moats who played defensive end his entire collegiate career and will have a bit of a learning curve adjusting to the stand up outside linebacker spot in a 3-4 scheme. He has all of the tools to successfully make the transition, but some scouts may question his skills coming from a lower level of competition. One weakness that improved during his career but still needs some work is how he plays against the run often getting caught up in the wash during pursuit down the line. The one saving grace for Moats during his days at JMU was just how intelligent he is in the way he escapes blockers using his hands to his advantage and those skills can be refined to make him a star pass rusher at the next level. He will most likely be available in the 5th round and at that point in the draft he would be a huge bargain for any general managers of teams running a 3-4 defensive system. A number of names will be called during April’s NFL Draft that seem to be from out of left field, but don’t let Arthur Moats’ be one of them. Keep looking out for more Under the Radar players shooting up draft boards or quietly lurking in the depth of this class that could make a huge impact over the coming years on Sundays. Not that it's a ton of good info but I thought I'd share. Moates led JMU last season with 90 tackles, 23 and a half for losses, and 11 sacks. "Analysis: Moats has been one of the better small school pass rushers the past two seasons and has been a disruptive force, consistently blowing up plays in the backfield. He's a pass rush specialist who will be brought onto the field in third-down situations and lined up as either a one-gap defensive end or outside linebacker for an NFL team.
