NoSaint
If you guys like Gaslight, and Alt Country, I suggest checking out Lucero (if you havent already). Great band out of Memphis. Sad, gritty, country with a good rock edge. Having been a fan of these guys for some time, I haven't been able to get into Gaslight Anthem much because every time I give GA a try I just want to put on Lucero and listen to someone do it better. Slower Song: youtube.com/watch?v=Ugj4LKRGOzw And a video I found while searching for my favorite song, of them rocking out Buffalo Tonight Aint Gonna Be Good and jw, dont be too mad at me for mentioning another band love lucero, if you like the DBT, and the alt country scene -- just go buy their cd Tennessee. Definitely their best, and i dont think you will be at all disappointed. ben nichols has a similar way of spinning simple songs that are just so vivid. his tend to lean a little more emotion based then story based, but he can tell a mean story too. i just think he excels in the other category in a special way. Delete This Account
lucero's good, but lacks the consistency -- in my opinion -- and degenerate poetry of the DBTs. now that the kings of leon have sold out, the Truckers might be the last rock and roll band standing. i exaggerate only slightly, but it's the sad state we find ourselves in. this new album cannot -- and i mean really cannot -- disappoint. and i say this as, three threads up, there's an american idol topic that i'm sure is generating far more attention than this one. and that's both sad and funny, all in one. jw

Their last album absolutely slays. I always found them to have consistency issues with their albums, but that last one (for the life of me I can't remember the title...1375 Overton Park? Something like that) just nails it. Also a killer live band. The alt-country (man I hate that term---why can't bad country be called alt-country? The Poojer
Never liked the term alt country...liked it back in the 80's with bands like the bodeans, rank and file, beat rodeo, beat farmers...called them cow-punk which really didn't fit either but I like it better than alt country

birdog1960
way ahead of you NoSaint, but appreciate the heads up. i've already downloaded their free single a couple of months ago, and am hitting the record theatre here in town on Tuesday. i've also kept an eye on their tour dates, but nothing excites me just yet. they're either playing too far away or at venues that are too big. for the first time i see them, i'd prefer a smaller club as opposed to a stadium and opening for tom petty and that ilk. i am keeping an eye on that show they just announced in backwoods ontario, though the date's a little too far in advance for me to commit, given that i have a very uncertain schedule. my wife and i are hitting the Loretta Lynn show up at the Riviera Theater in North Tonawanda in a few weeks. can't wait for that. jw saw them at bristol rhythm and roots this year and really liked them. lots of bands doing similar stuff there every year - brrr. you might want to check it out. i noticed the avett bros (were at brrr a few years back) and mumford and sons on the grammys last night and ray lamontagne actually won one and was nominated in a mainstream category. this genre is becoming deservedly more popular all the time. there's some great talent out there. Delete This Account
drop everything and head out and buy or steal or do what you have to do to get the newest Drive-By Truckers release, Go-Go Boots. finally got a chance to give this sucker a spin and, upon first listen, this just be their most mature, while they touch upon many of their familiar themes, losers, degenerates behind a soundtrack painted on a yearning backdrop. "I Do Believe" jumps off the disk, while "The Fireplace Poker," is haunting and angst-infused, and "Ray's Automatic Weapon" just knocked my socks off in its sparse, blunt and lonely indignity. and then there's the poetic screed against, what i believe is a former manager, titled "A*%holes," which is as a refinely delivered screw you as ever penned -- right up there with "Yer so Vain" -- and whomever this song has been written about truly knows it is about them. "Cartoon Gold" also stood out for its sly innocence. again, music is not dead, you just have to poke and peck for it. jw Edited March 8, 2011 by john wawrow

Delete This Account
Think he means Southern Rock Opera makes sense. i've got Southern Rock Opera ... all i'm missing is Gangstabilly, and the guys' solo stuff. SRO was a difficult album to get through in some ways, because they let their hard southern rock influence out and have bleed on their collective sleeves. so there was a lot there to wade through, never mind a double-album. that said, i think it was an important statement for them to make in regards to their roots and what they stood for. it put a lot into perspective. and there are some great songs on there: "Dead Drunk and Naked," "Zip City," "Let There Be Rock," "Shut Up And Get On The Plane," and "The Three Great Alabama Icons." it's too early to judge Go-Go Boots, just yet. but i will say that my favorites remain, in no particular order, "Pizza Deliverance," "Blessing and A Curse," and "Brighter Than Creation's Dark." i find these to be their most complete. and once i get through Go-Go Boots, i'll order Gansta and start my search for the solo stuff, including Izbell's. it's better to take this in portions, rather than to gorge, i find. jw

If you haven't seen Kurt Vile yet you are in for a treat. he is shockingly amazing. Saw him open for Dinosaur Jr last year and he totally held his own. Your store does have some killer shows set up. I got a lot of envy for people in Austin these days. This town is dead for live music. Last night was the last real gig for months. Walkmen and new Pornos are playing Buffalo in a couple months, closest to cool we got. Brief review of the gig last night: Dawes: Reminded me of seeing Jackson Browne. technically very very good, but never really got out of second gear. Middle Brother: Really incredible. They did a cover of Portland by the Mats. Total facemelter. Beautiful songs and some inspired guitar work Deer Tick: I have seen Iggy Pop, Paul Westerberg, Fugazi, DBT, Neil Young and the Ramones. I have seen Little Richard, James Brown, Springsteen, Dylan and Blue Cheer. I have seen the best...Deer Tick is one of the best. One of the most amazing sets of music I have ever seen. Plus covers of racing in the streets and Sam Cooke's Bring it on Home to me? If you like this kind of music, and clearly we all do, Deer Tick is part of that upper echelon of awesome. On the day Gweneth Paltrow signed a $900,000 record deal to make country albums it's nice to know there is still room for drunken scuzzy real country. as a side note, for you singles fellas, that show last night was lousy with gorgeous women. Apparently ladies love Deer Tick....good to know. i hear you. my wish list will soon be cut as i can't wait to pick up my DBT tickets today for their show in Buffalo on June 12. ... i cannot wait. jw I haven't seen them since they became well known...now that I think of it maybe 10 years since my last DBT show.
