Sad, gritty, country with a good rock edge. Having been a fan of these guys for some time, I haven't been able to get into Gaslight Anthem much because every time I give GA a try I just want to put on Lucero and listen to someone do it better. Definitely their best, and i dont think you will be at all disappointed. ben nichols has a similar way of spinning simple songs that are just so vivid. his tend to lean a little more emotion based then story based, but he can tell a mean story too. i just think he excels in the other category in a special way. Delete This Account Posted February 12, 2011 Author Share Posted February 12, 2011 lucero's good, but lacks the consistency -- in my opinion -- and degenerate poetry of the DBTs. now that the kings of leon have sold out, the Truckers might be the last rock and roll band standing. i exaggerate only slightly, but it's the sad state we find ourselves in. this new album cannot -- and i mean really cannot -- disappoint. and i say this as, three threads up, there's an american idol topic that i'm sure is generating far more attention than this one. and that's both sad and funny, all in one. jw Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ronnie and Neil, Zip City, Women Without Whiskey, Dead,Drunk&Naked..heck they are all DBT classics. Don't forget Angels and Fuselage. Huuuuge Lucero fan. Their last album absolutely slays. birdog1960 Posted February 14, 2011 Share Posted February 14, 2011 way ahead of you NoSaint, but appreciate the heads up. i've already downloaded their free single a couple of months ago, and am hitting the record theatre here in town on Tuesday. i've also kept an eye on their tour dates, but nothing excites me just yet. they're either playing too far away or at venues that are too big. for the first time i see them, i'd prefer a smaller club as opposed to a stadium and opening for tom petty and that ilk. i am keeping an eye on that show they just announced in backwoods ontario, though the date's a little too far in advance for me to commit, given that i have a very uncertain schedule. my wife and i are hitting the Loretta Lynn show up at the Riviera Theater in North Tonawanda in a few weeks. can't wait for that. jw saw them at bristol rhythm and roots this year and really liked them. lots of bands doing similar stuff there every year - brrr. you might want to check it out. i noticed the avett bros (were at brrr a few years back) and mumford and sons on the grammys last night and ray lamontagne actually won one and was nominated in a mainstream category. this genre is becoming deservedly more popular all the time. there's some great talent out there. "I Do Believe" jumps off the disk, while "The Fireplace Poker," is haunting and angst-infused, and "Ray's Automatic Weapon" just knocked my socks off in its sparse, blunt and lonely indignity. and then there's the poetic screed against, what i believe is a former manager, titled "A*%holes," which is as a refinely delivered screw you as ever penned -- right up there with "Yer so Vain" -- and whomever this song has been written about truly knows it is about them. Picked up tickets to see them at the end of April. Good, fun stuff...kinda remind me a bit of the Runaways, if the Runaways had been better! Their new album isn't out yet, but will be at the end of March...it is a little more refined sounding than the debut... SRO was a difficult album to get through in some ways, because they let their hard southern rock influence out and have bleed on their collective sleeves. so there was a lot there to wade through, never mind a double-album. that said, i think it was an important statement for them to make in regards to their roots and what they stood for. it put a lot into perspective. and there are some great songs on there: "Dead Drunk and Naked," "Zip City," "Let There Be Rock," "Shut Up And Get On The Plane," and "The Three Great Alabama Icons." it's too early to judge Go-Go Boots, just yet. but i will say that my favorites remain, in no particular order, "Pizza Deliverance," "Blessing and A Curse," and "Brighter Than Creation's Dark." i find these to be their most complete. and once i get through Go-Go Boots, i'll order Gansta and start my search for the solo stuff, including Izbell's. it's better to take this in portions, rather than to gorge, i find. jw Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They are in Philly tonight, but i couldn't get out to see them...
