Aaron Schobel

Bills#23Iowa

Recommended Posts

Scout.com's Adam Caplan reports that the Bills are scheduled to pay Aaron Schobel a $2 million roster bonus "around" March 9.

Ideally, Schobel will inform the team whether he's going to retire or keep playing before that date. Schobel would be a terrific fit as an outside linebacker in Buffalo's new 3-4 scheme, so the team is likely hoping he won't hang 'em up. Otherwise, the Bills will have yet another need area.

We should hear something soon.

And you know this how? His great coverage ability when he's had to pick up a slot WR, RB, TE???? His ability to shed blocks in the run game???? :D

Actually he does have decent coverage skills but most improtantly he has excellent pass rush skills which is what he will be asked to do.

He is too old, slow, and overweight to play as an OLB in a 3-4. Sure if he lost 20+lbs, and 3 years, and never had nagging injuries he might be a good fit. Its too late in the game for him to learn a new scheme and be productive. He would be a stopgap and thats about it.

If he was trying to get traded to a Texas team so he could be closer to his family, Id say good luck with that. Im sure every other team thinks the same about Schobel. Old, and slow.

Schobel is overweight? He lost significant amount of weight from his playing weight a few years ago. Obviously you just watch stats or fantasy football.

Old and slow and still gets double digit sacks again. Where can we find more of these players ?

For some reason nobody seems to think so, but OLB's in a 3-4 have to do more than just rush the passer. You can't just take any 4-3 defensive end and throw them in at OLB.

My inside source (seriously) tells me that he's angling to play for a Texas team to be closer to his family, not retire.

I like Schobel alot and think the people who criticize him are morons. He's been a really good Bills during a crappy era of Bills' football. That said, given the switch in defense, if you can trade him for a pick & get his money off the cap, you do it in a heartbeat. He's getting old and there's no guarantees in him fitting into the new defense. Let the young players play.

Yeah, Aaron Kampman is a very similar player to Schobel and he struggled mightily with the switch. Move AS if you can.

One of the reasons I would trade him is because he's had to put up with being a Buffalo Bill for ten stinkin years. By the time we are good again, Schobel will no longer have double digit sack ability. Send him to a team where he at least has a chance at a winning season. He deserves it.

I'm a big AS fan but we paid him million of dollars. We owe him nothing. The Bills need to do what is best for their organization. Trade him for a draft pick and make both sides happy. If not, don't otright release him and forced him to retire or play. This isn't a charity. Hopefully, it works out for the best.

But they're not the SAME player, are they? I'm not saying he can't do it, only that expecting him to be able to do it just because he decent stats as a 4-3 DE is absurd. It just doesn't work that way.
