Was Vince Young that bad?
Geno Smith's Arm replied to Livinginthepast's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No other team has any interest in him. If Fitz got cut tomorrow he would have a new team within a week,,,,and Fitz sucks. -
seriously.. whats wrong with the D

They are demoralized, and are on a slippery slope. They don't have the kind of leadership fight through when things go bad. They aren't mentally tough. They don't believe in each other, or the offense (the QB especially). -

The Gailey Era Is All But Over

I hope there are agents for coaches contacting the Bills, or putting out feelers. This team is ripe for a big change. -

Has Chan Gailey lost this team?
Geno Smith's Arm replied to HOUSE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Chan hasn't lost this team, but this team is lost, and this team has lost me. -
What I get from it is that he is blaming the players. Basically saying "I did everything a coach could do, they just didn't perform". I too blame the players, but when a team rolls up the kind of numbers the Pats did, there is obviously plenty of blame to go around. I didn't read anything like "If I had to do it over again, I would have changed a few things" or something like that. It seems to me that he basically worked for only half the game.

I'm suggesting that there is a correlation between bringing in QB's, and finding a good one. And I'm suggesting that a team that is willing to draft that many quarterbacks, while they already have what they feel is a long term, high quality starter, is placing a higher priority on finding a quality QB than the Bills. They didn't need to spend high picks on QB's, but I would venture to say that if they didn't have one, they wouldn't hesitate to spend high picks.

I'm not suggesting any of the things you mentioned. You claimed that the Bills have spent a reasonable amount of draft picks on QB's (whether directly, or through trades). I disagree. And the fact that GB drafts so many QB's is surely an indication that they place a lot of importance on QB's. You, with the benefit of hindsight are able to dismiss failed prospects, just as easily as others are able to point to players like Brees, and Brady that have worked out. It's a roll of the dice that the Bills haven't been taking often enough. A brief perusal of this site http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/ will allow you to quickly find any teams draft history. If you look into a few teams, it's easy to see that most (if not all) have drafted more QB's than the Bills have since 1995, and all of them have made the playoffs more recently than the Bills.

The Green Bay Packers, with Brett Favre already established as their QB, have drafted 11 quarterbacks since 1994. Is that a hard enough fact for you? That is a team that is properly prioritizing the position. Their defense, or any other positions don't appear to have suffered for it, and they have been a successful team. They weren't even in desperate need of a QB, yet the put those resources toward the position. Yes, the Bills have tried, and no they haven't ignored the position, but they haven't done enough. Maybe you need a firmer grasp of the obvious.

So the last 20 years has just been "hard luck" for the Bills, in their efforts to find a suitable QB? I agree that it isn't easy to find one. I understand why they didn't try to start over with a rookie QB. They are stuck with Fitz, the only window for them to select a guy that would be expected to start right away was year one. But not getting a QB here is bad for the long term. That's been part of the problem, instability. If I were a GM, I wouldn't be able to sleep until I had a QB I believed in. My main focus would be either finding one right away, or getting myself into position to get one. It shouldn't take more than 3 years to get a hold of a good PROSPECT.

They would run the ball 75% of the time. They would keep Fitz, because he is easily the best QB on the roster, but work around his flaws. They would still have Fitz at this point because there aren't any better QB's to be had right now. They wouldn't have anything to do with Vince Young. Just cutting your QB without a better option, is really dumb.

I can give them a pass for the last couple drafts for not selecting a QB in the first, but not for all the drafts since Kelly has been gone. Only one try at drafting a 1st rounder, especially considering that a 1st round guy is the only guy they have EVER had success with (don't mention AFL days. Please.), is ridiculous. If you are satisfied with the way they have handled finding a starter (not a "franchise QB") at the most important position I think you are oblivious.

Ugh. They may have "spent" first picks on QB's, but they have only drafted one since Kelly. The good ones aren't usually available by trade. The way to spend a first pick on a QB is to DRAFT the guy. The Bills have only drafted 2 QB's in the first round. One is a Hall of Famer, the other one sucked. Not a bad percentage. Keep trying!

Let's say the Bills beat the Niners
Geno Smith's Arm replied to BisonMan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I expect them to win more games, and even some against tough teams. Out of conference games seem to be "let up" games for many teams. They don't carry the same weight, and teams don't know each other as well, etc. If the Bills lose to the 49ers, for the first time ever, I'm not gonna watch another game until they win one. That's my new approach, they win I watch the next game. If not, I will wait until they win one to watch again. I have a family, and my free time is getting shorter. I have been through the raised hope/crushing let-down cycle way too many times now, and I'm not sure this organization is really serious about winning.
