Romney opens 5 point lead over Obama
PastaJoe replied to DaveinElma's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
And 2000 when the Supremes picked Bush. It ain't over even after it's over. -
We know that doing nothing wouldn't change the outcome. If he couldn't legally buy an assault weapon and large clips it would at least make it harder to carry out the same assault, and perhaps less people would have been shot. We'll never be able to stop every nut, just like we'll never be able to stop every terrorist. But to do nothing and just say, 'Oh well, that's the price we pay for having a 2nd amendment' is ludicrous. The argument that then only criminals will have assault weapons is bogus. How many people walk around with an assault weapon to protect themselves from a crime? But the NRA will say the gov't wants to take away all guns, and the nuts who think the government is going to put them in FEMA camps will scream, and keep scaring enough politicians into resisting bans on assault weapons. You can keep your pistols and rifles, but there's no justification for private ownership of off-the-shelf assault weapons. The harm outweighs any 'recreational sport' benefit.

Once again Republicans get caught in the hypocrisy of complaining when Democrats open up the Lee Atwater playbook. Willie Horton, Monica Lewinsky, Swift-boating. What goes around comes around. Oh the delicious irony! Romney opened this whole can of worms by saying his private sector experience makes him better qualified to improve the economy. OK, so let's see how well you did in the private sector based on your work. Did you profit off of the bones of closed American companies? If he's not ashamed of what he earned and how he did it, then there's no reason to keep hiding the truth. Let Republicans defend his method of obtaining wealth to the voters, and then the voters will decide who has their best interest at heart. He could have put this to rest back when Newt called for it during the primaries. To keep resisting just fuels the fire that he wants to hide the facts from the voters. Let's go conservatives, open up the books and defend your vision of capitalism to the voters. George Romney released 12 years of returns, stating that “one year could be a fluke, perhaps done for show.”, and he paid a 37 percent effective tax rate. Like father, NOT like son.

Well then he was just mistaken, because the policies that were implemented are not failing. The banks were bailed out which prevented an economic collapse, the Affordable Care Act has opened up healthcare options that previously weren't available to millions, and GM and Chrysler were saved from bankruptcy and thousands of jobs were saved. We could be in even better shape if Congress would stop stonewalling on other Obama proposals to boost domestic demand and prevent further public sector layoffs at the state and local level that are a drag on the net unemployment numbers, where private sector jobs have been increasing. Not to mention his foreign policy successes. And his appearance was more about him reinforcing his conservative credentials with the right wingers than trying to win over NAACP members.

Am I the only one finds Hillary Clinton ....
PastaJoe replied to truth on hold's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My girl Hillary has been an outstanding SoS, and even some conservatives agree with that. I don't blame her for looking a bit tired sometimes, hard work will do that to a person. And we hold women to a higher standard than men. Alot of it is what hair style she wears; some are better than others. I met her in the 90's and she looks better in person than in pictures. And she would be a tremendous choice for president in 2016 (and would have been in 2008). She has only improved and expanded on her resume. Reagan won when he was 69. And her recent approval rating was at 66%, which must include some Republicans. She can take her well deserved break after she steps down from SoS, recharge and then make a run in 2016 after Obama's 2nd term. -

Ask the workers at Niagara Envelope how well he "made the trains run". Meanwhile, Obama made the cars run off the production lines in Detroit, which they wouldn't be doing if Willard had his way and there were no loans to GM or Chrysler. http://www.buffalonews.com/business/article924536.ece -
Question For Those Of You That Have Kids
PastaJoe replied to Bigfatbillsfan's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Most parents dictate what religion their kids grow up believing in, and organized religion throughout history has been responsible for much of the political debate. So I wouldn't worry about what your kid hears from you about politics. What you can do is explain what both side's views are of a given debate, and then explain why you favor one over the other, and ask them what they think about it. -

Now they're stealing material from Mussolini? I thought trains were a liberal socialist idea to take away an individual's right to drive where they want when they want. Plus it would adversely impact the oil industry and require spending more on infrastructure. -
SCOTUS to rule on Obamacare sometime this week
PastaJoe replied to /dev/null's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I started the day thinking that the result would be like when the Bills signed Mark Anderson, good but not great, but then was pleasantly surprised when they went all in and got Mario Williams. Thankfully Roberts put law over ideology. A constitutional law whose idea was started by the conservative Heritage Foundation in 1989, and then implemented as Romneycare in Mass., which it was modeled after, but is now opposed for political reasons because it was enacted by a Democrat. In 20 years people will look upon this and same-sex marriage like we do now about the Civil Rights Act. Lots of protests and claims it will be the ruin of the country when enacted, but now considered common sense. The best thing Romney could have done to win over moderates would have been to embrace Romneycare. But he couldn't and still win the primary, and now he's in too deep to go back to his previous stand from 2006; "With regards to the individual mandate, the individual responsibility program that I proposed, I was very pleased that the compromise between the two houses includes the personal responsibility mandate. That is essential for bringing the health care costs down for everyone and getting everyone the health insurance they need." http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/06/28/old-video-shows-romney-lauding-old-health-care-mandate/ Justice Ginsberg even cited Romneycare as part of the reason to uphold the Affordable Care Act. 'Writing on the subject of providing affordable insurance to those with preexisting conditions, Ginsburg noted that Massachusetts “cracked [the] adverse selection problem.” and highlighted briefs explaining “the success of Massachusetts’ reforms.” Under the Massachusetts health system, most residents were required to buy insurance so that insurance companies wouldn’t be left only with sick customers – and thus skyrocketing premiums. “As a result, federal lawmakers observed, Massachusetts succeeded where other States had failed,” Ginsburg wrote. Ginsburg also referenced a brief “noting … the Commonwealth’s reforms” which “reduced the number of uninsured residents to less than 2%, the lowest rate in the Nation, and cut the amount of uncompensated care by a third… In coupling the minimum coverage provision with guaranteed issue and community-rating prescriptions, Congress followed Massachusetts’ lead.” http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/06/ginsburg-opinion-cites-massachusetts-law-127565.html -
Haven't you heard, the Romney campaign has been telling Republican governors to stop talking about how the economy is improving, because it conflicts with the Romney talking points that the economy is getting worse.

Today's feel good story of the day - hockey edition
PastaJoe replied to Just Jack's topic in Off the Wall Archives
That scrimmage and the Cup were at the hockey rink that I play at on Sunday mornings. We saw a rolled up banner above the ice but didn't know what it was for, and we didn't find out about it until that afternoon on the news. It was closed to the public. If I had know I might have hid out in the locker until they brought it out and snuck a peek. -
I always thought there was little any president could do to affect gas prices. But back in March, Republican Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming declared that Obama was "fully responsible for what the American public is paying for gasoline.” So I stand corrected. And given this new fact, it would only be fair that those that criticized the President when prices rose, now thank him for the lower prices. To do otherwise would be hypocritical, and that's not the "AmerCIAn" way. So feel free to leave your thanks below.

An alternative theory to UFOs being from another planet is that they are from our future, traveling back to observe history (and perhaps altering it).

May speak to Romney's ability to woo the Independent
PastaJoe replied to John Adams's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
This just fuels the narrative that the Republican party is intolerant to "others". Even if it's just a more socially conservative portion of the party, they appear to have veto power over the rest of the party. If Willard wanted to show true leadership, he would have spoken out against those who didn't like him putting a gay man in a position of prominence. Instead they minimized his position over the past couple of weeks and didn't even include him in foreign policy meetings. Technically Willard can claim he wasn't pushed out, but it's obvious he resigned because they took away the job responsibilities he was originally hired to do and marginalized him to appease the right. Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0512/75821.html#ixzz1tkkN2ZdL But Christian Whiton, who served in the Bush State Department as a political appointee and spoke with Grenell on Tuesday, told POLITICO: “Basically, Ric got Etch-A-Sketched.” “I gathered Ric was frustrated that Team Romney wouldn’t aggressively engage Obama on foreign policy. Ric was kept from talking to the press as a spokesman typically would. They seem to have decided to concede foreign policy to Obama, and therefore didn’t need an aggressive spokesman,” said Whiton, a former Newt Gingrich adviser who described Grenell as a “friend.” “This confirms the worst of what people think of team Romney. It seems in retrospect like Grenell was hired to check some diversity box, but was then kept in the closet because others were offended,” said Whiton. “It’s very strange that foreign policy strategy and related issues were not run to ground before Ric was hired. It’s frankly incompetent management.” Ari Fleischer, a former George W. Bush press secretary, also raised an eyebrow to The Washington Post about Grenell’s absence during the first major foreign-policy moment of the 2012 general election. “Why wasn’t Rick the spokesman in the last couple of days, when foreign policy was paramount? That’s the piece I don’t understand,” Fleischer told the paper. “I don’t know why he wasn’t the spokesman on foreign policy for the last several days. It’s something that nobody understands.” -

Newsflash...people throw elbows in politics. Republicans always relied on the foreign policy / military issue as an asset. Now that Obama has taken that away from them they're calling foul. If the mission had failed, Republicans would have been screaming for investigations and saying how Obama was another Jimmy Carter. He made the tough call, it succeeded, and now people need to be reminded of where we were in Iraq and with al Quida before Obama took office, and where we are now. Reagan had an ad about "the bear in the woods", and who do you trust to protect us. One of GW Bush's first ads against Kerry featured images of the Twin Towers and people being taken out of it.

You're right, the more one posts in this forum, the more one's ignorance is shown. Who can throw the most monkey poo. -
I can't stand Chucky, he's way too annoying. I'd much rather have Ron Jaworski. If not for Mel Kiper, it wouldn't be interesting at all. I preferred listening to the WGR coverage.

Commander Tom! The good old days of local children's television shows. I went to see Rocketship 7 live when I was about 6 years old. Spilled my orange soda on my pants, and had to sit with wet pants through Dialing for Dollars.

Oh brother! Yes, thank you for that wonderful Iraq War. I am surprised that Obama's socialist death panel approved of the procedure.
