  1. I thought they said he was the number one available when they're pick came up and that he was projected by them to be the number one available when we picked that year. They considered taking him instead of Lynch (or so they said). The year lynch was drafted I remember thinking that it would finally be the year we took a stud in the first round of the draft (Willis) and get the defense back together. Then SF took him and you almost got the feeling that it was a complete shock for everyone (the team included).
  2. Not trying to be a smart-ass, but outside of rushing the passer from the OLB in a 3-4, what else is he good at? Can he play the run or cover a TE or RB with speed? I always thought of him as a 3-4 rush LB who really didn't play the run that well, but I may be wrong...
  3. No - I don't actually care how well these guys can talk, just about how well they can pick and develop football players. Why does anyone care what they sound like?
  4. Mr Wilson won't let us have any fun. Who wants to get a bag of dog**** and light it on fire on his front porch?
  5. I think you could make the switch and only really need two or three players - not all of them full-time starters. Something like this: DE: Stroud DE: Williams NT: need Rush OLB: Maybin ILB: Poz ILB: Mittchell OLB: need/Schobel Obviously this is only the starters, so we would certainly need some depth as well, but I think this could work. First of all, Schobel, if he comes back next year, would be a situational pass rusher from the OLB position. You'd need to bring in the prototypical NT and an OLB who can cover and play the run primarily, so Schobel can come in on passing downs and rush from that spot. I'd have to think that the DL, with an NT we don't have now, and Stroud and Williams would be pretty stout. Johnson and McCargo could work as DE backups (maybe not McCargo). Poz and Mitchell should be good inside. The keys to this defense, as I see it, are: 1. Maybin needs to work out in the OLB capacity, meaning he has to be effective rushing the passer from that spot and has to show some ability to drop into coverage (I think he plays the run well enough now to play the rush backer position in a 3-4 - since that won't be his primary responsibility); and two we need an NT. My thought on this year is that even is they eventually want to go 3-4, they will only do it part time this year and going forward until they have the right players to play it all the time. Basically it will depend on whether they can get a good NT in the draft (or FA). The only other worry, and it's kind of big, is whether or not the LBs as a group can hold up and how the depth looks (of course the starter who isn't on the roster now would be a big step).
  6. I think it goes hand in hand. I fyou have a QB who can get you into the right play (after reading the defense) that goes a long way towards making the oline look better. Also, a QB with a quick release will help. A good example is Indy, with Manning. They don't have a very good oline, but he is able to make it work. I'm not trying to say that you don't need both, but it's like everything else in football: there's no one right way to do things, despite what all the talking heads say.
  7. As soon as I saw the thread title, that play was the first thing that came to mind.
  8. The only way you could know that is if... you... were.... JOHN GUY!?
  9. That's only one foot on the scale though.
  10. I actually called and got an interview. I thought it went well, but I'm more of a defense guy and don't have any HC experience.
  11. I don't know how to feel anymore.
  12. I didn't get that part of the article either. He writes about the whole thing like people here are going to be pissed off even if he wins 10 games next year (which he won't and the fans wouldn't if he did).
  13. Justice is not shooting people. Yeah the guy was a scum bag, but it doesn't exactly sound like Marvin was doing all he could to stay out of it. It also sounded like he had a few people in his employ that would shoot or beat up someone. The logic behind the whole thing is screwy. If you shoot someone in true self-defense (where you are about to be killed yourself) that is one thing, but to just decide that you've had enough of a guy bothering you and instead of calling the cops have him shot is a criminal activity. HE CONSPIRED TO KILL A MAN!
  14. I don't think Lynch can be a lead-blocker fullback.
  15. Assuming of course that they have been candid with the press about who they are targetting? What if they met with Cowher, he declined, and they went on from there?
  16. If we could trade Lynch for a first round pickI'd probably be inclined to do it. Anything less and no. Whether it's Lynch or someone else, we need a capable back up running back. I think the only teams that primarily used only one RB this year were Cinn and Det (might be wrong - from the top of my head). Even Peterson has a quality backup. Chris Johnson has another back that carries that ball too. I also think it's wrong to assume that it would be a cost saving move. Lynch has an equal to or smaller contract than any vet of similar ilk who would sign to come here. Chester Taylor probably makes more than Lynch to back up one of the top two backs in football. Unless you are getting a good pick, I can't see how this actually makes the team better. Someone would take him, but I doubt it would be for anything close to a 1st. Get used to it: He's ours for the forseeable future. One unproductive season behind a crappy line does not make him a bad player. Also, new coaches can do wonders for stagnant players. I'm kind of interested in seeing what will happen with the underachievers on our team who have some talent and have shown flashes. Guys like Marshawn, Donte, to a certain extent Poz, McKelvin, Maybin, and maybe even McCargo and Edwards all have shown at least a little flash of a starting calibre football player (some moreso than others and Maybin on talent). Who knows, Buddy might find the right players to put around some of them and the new coach might find better ways to use them so that they do more than what we've seen in the past. I'm by no means saying that all these guys are going to become All-Stars, just that you don't know which ones might improve or hit it off with the new coach and wind up breaking through as starters and contributors.
  17. You and your calm logic are not welcome here sir! Billsphan (probably a fish fan anyways) obviously knows the Bills intimately.
  18. So exactly who did they interview who fit that description? I think Cowher was the youngest outside of Fewell. Also, way to use Sully to back up your arguement. Why don't you go on a college basketball board with that post!
  19. It might make sense that if Cowher or Shannahan had accepted the job, that Nix would be forced to have that person as coach. Ralph and Russ might even have told Nix that if Shannahan or Cowher will accept, he has to take them. I suspect that is pretty much what happened. You gotta remember, what you, I , and the rest of the fans get told doesn't make any difference in the win/loss column or how the football team does. So they run that operation how they see fit. Is your point that you think the way they are going about the reorganization incorrectly because they interviewed two previous coaches (for what position on the team we don't know) before they hired a GM? Sounds like pent up anger to me, but hey, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Mine is that they knew they needed someone at the top of the football operation that was able to pick personel and had an idea on how to build a team. Seems to me that Shannahan and Cowher both fit that mold and Buddy Nix is now on board to ensure that we have someone who will fill that role.
