And they’re good. What am I missing?

Good enough to lose to good teams that don't go for misdirection constantly and play undisciplined on defense.  Their entire offensive success is predicated on smoke and mirrors.  When that stops working against good defenses, what happens? Their offense comes to a near standstill. They have no answers because Tua is limited in what he can do...and once you force him to play to his limitations instead of his strengths, he crumbles.

That isn't a winning formula, especially when you are going to have to pay your QB more than double on the cap what he is making now and by extension, eliminate a lot of the money you have for keeping talent around him.  If he isn't good enough to be a difference maker when he has loaded skill positions around him, how the hell do you expect him to do it with lesser talent?  He has to make up the difference. He can't!  He is the one holding them back more than anything at this point...once he starts making $50 million a year they are likely capped at 9 wins every year.

I mean could you imagine Allen or Mahomes with those skill positions? They would almost never lose a game, probably would be 14-3 or 15-2 every year.

IMO, the Dolphins will never win the division with a healthy Josh Allen if they pay him that money.  They are done with. They are basically committing AFC East division suicide for the next 5-6 years or however long it will take for them to get out of that contract.

Dude had to skip the Senior Bowl weigh in to make sure he could get down to 366 lol. I fear for his health.

That is a lot of brisket, red beans and rice and cornbread...just for fun, I went and calculated his maintenance calories for him to maintain that weight and he needs to consume 5500 calories a day. That's craziness.

Now I see why those NFL lineman lose so much weight when they retire...literally all you have to do is eat like a normal person and you can lose 60 lbs like nothing.

    not necessarily. sort of.

knew a guy who was from a country outside of the US. the athlete was not in a popular sport (baseball, football, basketball). an alumnus from the same overseas village as the athlete would give him money and presents regularly.

another, was a woman who played the same sport as the athlete 30 years before and had enough money to assist the student athlete with just a little bit, probably guessing it was less than $500/month for lunches and "dinner dates."

I'm talking for the schools to keep these programs around.

your assumption is grossly wrong 🤪. and taking about 50 years ago as experience is grossly different than just 15-20 years ago.

i played in a division 1 sport at a MAC school in the early 00's briefly (about 4 months). I was burned out and quit having been playing athletic competitive sports since 8 or 9 years old. i participated with 3 world class athletes on my team and associated with at least 3 future nfl players i can think of on the top of my head.

Your personal views and my personal views were much different and we will have to agree to disagree.

Yeah trying to compare the 70s to now might as well be comparing two different sports.

Here's an article to better understand NIL:  NIL

The average length of NFL careers is about 3 years, so the percentage of players from every draft class who actually succeed, much less become long-term starters who make significant money, is tiny.   Many draftees will never make nearly as much in the NFL as they do from capitalizing on NIL while collegians.  This might not be true of first round picks or even most Day 2 picks, but certainly for kids drafted on Day 3.   A lot of Day 3 picks are proverbial "big fish in a small pond" types who aren't going to even make NFL practice squads.

NIL is about the NCAA allowing collegiate athletes the right to earn money off of their images, names or other likenesses, which the NCAA didn't allow until a 2021 court case.   Colleges still cannot pay collegiate athletes for playing sports.   NIL is about individual athletes profiting from their collegiate -- and in some cases, high school -- fame.

BUT...the majority of underclassmen coming out are higher caliber talents than the ones that typically stay in, so the rate of them being selected earlier would be much higher.

What is stopping an NFL owner from "paying" college kids? Kind of like a recruiting tool when they get to the NFL

The rookie salary cap. Basically everybody knows what they are going to get paid at every position in the draft from signing bonus, to total contract value, to guaranteed money.  No negotiating on that...they can negotiate things like offset language, etc, but that's it. It's why you see almost no holdouts anymore of rookies because it's set in stone.  Only ones are fighting over offset language usually.

Exactly. It is about the individual. Not the sport. Sports will die. Wrestling, track, many men's sports have been destroyed already (title ix bull####).

The individual will prosper if he can be a solid superstar. But the poor kid who is just good enough to get out of the slums to get a half ride playing 3rd TE on FAU, or the kid who busted his ass for grades and sports to be 7th man on the bench at Memphis... They're not going to make money but I sure as ***** know they appreciate the education and scholarships.

I think, beyond these athletes being taxed appropriately, they need to surrender their scholarship for collecting nil.

Mostly sports that nobody cares about.

  6. This is so embarrassing for these teams...

Two financial nuggets that stood out, given that they are tied to billion-dollar franchises: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who finished 24th overall, charged non-starting players with less than four years of experience a fee of $1,750 if they wanted to opt out of having a roommate in their hotel room prior to games. And the Chargers offered a discount on gameday daycare services: $75 for the first child and $50 for each additional child.

At worst, it would only be hurting the talent pool for one year.  Say, for example, all the eligible Jr.'s stay in school this year.  That would hurt the talent pool this year, but next year they would all be coming out,  PLUS they would have one more year of experience.  There would be fewer one year wonders to tempt GMs and then crash and burn.  Seems that long term it would really help the talent pool....now, as for the quality of their poo, I really couldn't say.

But it will be hurting it in perpetuity while NIL deals are allowed, so technically it IS hurting the class every year. It's not like the players staying in this year will enter the draft and then all the other underclassmen in next year's draft won't exhibit the same behavior and enter the draft also.  They will be staying in too.

  8. Seems like more and more kids are staying in college instead of declaring early...this year there were only 58 underclassmen who declared for the draft this year. Last year there were 82. In 2019, before the NIL deals were allowed 135 declared...

Caleb Williams reportedly made $10 million in endorsement and NIL deals the past 2 years at USC, meaning overall in his first 4 years in the NFL, he will be taking a slight PAYCUT to play(not factoring in endorsement/commercial deals, which could push him over that). Williams will make a little over $38.5 million over the first 4 years if he is selected #1 overall as he is expected to be. If he doesn't get taken 1st overall, every pick beneath that his money starts to dwindle. If he isn't top 5, he will make under $30 million his first 4 seasons total.

This is for the #1 player on most boards...now imagine a player who has a good NIL deal that might only be a 2nd or 3rd round pick but is a huge deal in college where he plays...he could easily make more playing college football than he does in the NFL to start out.  Crazy to think about, but NIL deals could be hurting the talent pool in the draft as more kids decide to stay in college.

Brandon Beane is always worth a listen because he is a straight shooter and sometimes probably tells you more than he should. Having listened to his presser and his huddle with the Buffalo media here are my takeaways:

    1. They are going to add a receiver early but it doesn't have to be a specific type and he doesn't have to have a specific skillset. They are going to evaluate all these guys in the round and the one they take will be because they think he is the best available at their spot and the value matches the round;

    2. Von Miller is on the team in 2024. I know we all suspected that anyway, some of us hoped it wasn't necessarily the case but the Bills are doubling down;

    3. Rasul Douglas is not the absolute lock to be back I think most of us assumed. He twice went immediately to past tense when talking about him "I liked what he brought to our defense" and "it was a pleasure getting to know him." Now neither of those definitely mean he is gone, but there are ways of making those same points without phrasing in the past tense and as I said at the start sometimes Beane tells you more than he means to. It definitely made my ears prick up. He is almost $10m of pure savings with zero dead cap if they cut him. I'm not saying I expect them to but I thought the tense he used was interesting.

    4. They are not going to use their 1st round pick on a safety. Beane was pretty clear that at that spot he thinks about smarts and study habits and not 40 times and athletic profiles. I think that screamed to be they are going to take a guy who is good on tape not good in shorts.

    5. Don't expect them to draft OL early and do expect them to extend Dion. I also would not be at all surprised if they extend Spencer Brown before the season. He seemed very happy with the situation up front.

I'd much rather they extend Douglas to bring that cap hit down than release him.  Why would you trade for a guy and give up a 3rd to cut him?

  10. Hard to know exact figures since they don't officially get released, but was listening to the JR Sports Brief show driving home the other night and he was talking about how rumors are swirling that Andy Reid will likely be getting an extension that makes him the highest paid coach in the NFL(and it's well deserved, BTW), and then he started talking about head coaching salaries and how they have exploded over recent years since teams realize they can get competitive advantages and they don't count against the cap.

He said that sources have told him over half of the NFL head coaches now make 15+ million a year and that Sean Payton is the highest paid coach, getting $18-20 million from the Broncos.

Is this really true?  I guess it wouldn't be surprising with the proliferation of the salary cap and how much money the teams are generating that the coaches would be getting paid significantly more as well, but it still was shocking to hear that...

Got me curious if McD is in the richer half or poorer half now.

Can’t imagine she’ll ever top our boy. Short of experiencing any physical, verbal, or mental abuse, she hit the lotto with Josh. Should’ve done all she could’ve to keep that going. Personally, I think Josh upgraded with his current lady.

And if you believe the videos posted by the Bills of him throwing in his shorts, not in other ways either.

  12. I don't like so many players lined up within such a small area of each other. Would like to see some staggering involved to prevent a returner from breaking thru the first line and being nothing but daylight in front of him with a slow kicker trying to catch him.

Maybe have 6 players lined up where they are now and the other 4 lined up 10-15 yards farther back?
