  1. oh....I didn't realize that THEY figured into this. you should have just said. it makes perfect sense to me now. I see what you mean.
  2. it sounds to me like you're presuming there's adequate space in there.
  3. I get so damned sick of this kind of crap. if you don't want people wearing feathers on their head, don't have a native american cultural heritage night. just play the damned game and shut up already.
  4. yes indeed. grocery stores, especially corporate-owned grocery stores, exist solely to create a food dependency among the local populace, then bleed them dry before closing up shop and moving to another neighborhood, where they begin the process all over again. it's even worse among urban minority communities, because the greedy grocers get rich off of the poor's welfare money and food stamps. all kidding aside, I would love to see more real grocery stores appearing in areas such as the one in the linked article, but if it was economically feasible to do so, then they'd already be there. I mentioned FIGMOS earlier - they were a grocery store that had gone out of business, and one of the employees bought it and renamed it FIGMOS (acronym for finally I got my own supermarket). this was right around the time I moved away from WNY. not long ago I did an internet search to find out what had become of them, and learned that they weren't open for long. the reason most often cited was rampant theft, both by customers and employees. it would be great if they can pull it off in Chicago, but I remain skeptical. yeah, I read that and I wish Mariano well. he appears to be offering a pretty sweet deal considering the lengths he appears to be willing to go to in the way of job training and customer service skills.
  5. it's true that you wouldn't expect to see an anachronism, but the reason for that is that an anachronism is something that's misplaced in time. the word itself is based on the Roman root 'chronicus' (which I believe was derrived from the Greek 'kronos') meaning 'time'. thus we have the people who recreate medieval jousts and battles known as 'the society for creative anachronisms'. on the other hand, if you are truly as wealthy as you describe, you hold the power to persuade me into changing the way I define any word to better suit your, or anyone else's, desire.
  6. nothing silly about it. if I'm missing your point, you could always just clarify it for me instead of quoting that lame piece of audio that masquerades as a song.
  7. yeah, I'm not getting that either. there's usually a pretty good reason that certain economically depressed areas have had their grocery stores close up and move away. the old FIGMOS in Buffalo in particular comes to mind.
  8. probably my favorite underrated character actor would be Lance Henricksen, but since he doesn't fit the bill, how about Avery Brooks?
  9. good lord. amusing is an understatement. the man is a walking face-palm.
  10. I've always thought it unwise for retailers, businesses, and celebrities to openly take up political causes, especially ones that are tied to one party or another. they absolutely have the right to do so, but they risk alienating a good portion of people that would otherwise be customers or fans. it also adds fuel to the opposition, in this case handing a perceived victory to the opposition now that Costco is putting the book back on their shelves.
  11. no, but I do know a lot of people who know the difference between 'anachronism' and 'acronym'.
  12. perhaps you should look it up. it appears to me that you meant to use the word 'acronym'.
  13. what's even more disturbing to me is that when anyone does show outrage over the border issue, they're often accused of racism.
  14. so they can bestow upon them the coveted status of victimhood.
  15. Costso is well within their right to conduct their business as they see fit, but I think it's fairly laughable to claim to champion diversity while pulling a book from its shelves because of a difference in political philosophy.
  16. like I said, you have no idea what you're talking about. you never do. your attempt to sound intelligent only makes it worse.
  17. the only thing it proves is that you have no idea what he's talking about.
  18. you should consider trying the discworld books by Terry Pratchett. they're very well written, and have a sense of humor to them that is somewhere between Monty Python and Douglas Adams. this guide might be helpful: http://www.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/the-discworld-reading-order-guide-20.jpg
  19. since Nergal from Behemoth wasn't included, I had no choice but to go with Marie Curie.
  20. it sounds to me like the EEOC is being consistent with this administration, it's policies, and the views of the president's supporters. after all, job performance doesn't factor into it. if you criticize the president for his poor performance, it's because you're a racist.
  21. I was alluding to his arguments in the George Will thread, but to your point, who knows what in hell he's talking about?
