  1. If someone was going to do it for free for you, wouldn't you take them up on it? I order the parts on Amazon, leave it in the backseat and when I bring the car in, ask him to please change them. Takes him 2 seconds and builds up good will so he knows I won't go elsewhere.
  2. Why is there plenty wrong with that? They're giving the customers what they want. You might not like it, but the majority of the world does. Authors do the same thing. You don't really think Dean Koontz is a great author, do you? But he's richer than sin because he writes books that have a wide audience. They're easily accessible to a wide range of readers and are quick to digest. Kinda like McDonalds.
  3. I go back and forth on this one. I eat out several times a week, but a lot of that is to get out of the office and relax with coworkers. If I brought my lunch, I end up eating at my desk and working the entire time. I'm already putting in 10 hours a day, don't need to add to it. Plus it's fun to hang out with your coworkers - it builds the team up. I suppose if you have a lunchroom area where people eat, you can get the same effect, but I've never seen that in any IT shop I've worked. I know I could save money by not eating out as much, but I'm not willing to lose the break/social aspect of it.
  4. I do this one very well, and it drives my wife crazy. I'll debate it for 1-6 months before pulling the trigger, always keeping an eye on prices and such. Sometimes I pull the trigger, sometimes I don't - but she hates the constant debate. In her world, money is unlimited, so if you want something, just buy it. (ok, she's not quite that bad - and is MUCH better than some women I know, including most of my coworkers' wives. ).
  5. I don't think anybody has (seriously) called Nickelback "Kings of Rock." But they're very successful, have very catchy riffs, and are easy to listen to. There's no substance, but name some mainstream music that DOES have substance. Why do you think there are so many, "Help me find some new music" threads?
  6. Geez... My local mechanic does it for around $40. Of course he also installs wind shield wipers for me for free if I provide them... And has replaced a headlight for free too, if I provide the bulb. So I always go to him.
  7. Dates are MUCH cheaper than being married...
  8. It's not like this is a new thing... The Monkees, anyone?
  9. That one and the "burn it to the ground" song. Has a catchy bass line, and I love the line, "Get your hand off of this glass, last call my ass.". (come on, people don't think this stuff is awesome? )
  10. I'm not a huge Nickelback fan, but I admit their tunes are catchy. But they're also VERY similar... My wife likes listening to them, and I personally think there are far worse bands out there. That said, they may not be the best musicians in the world (duh), but they are amazing businessmen. Or at least Chad Kroeger is, I don't know about the rest of the band. I've seen them live a couple of times and they put on a pretty entertaining show. They play up the sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll bit throughout the entire show - they interact with the crowd, give people free drinks, and Kroeger pretends to be part of the whole thing, getting beers and shots given to him on stage during the show. If you pay attention though, you can tell it's all an act - he drinks MAYBE 1/4 of a drink total over the 3 hours. He's not stupid - he plays up the image on stage, but knows it's all just an act. Practically everyone in the country has heard a Nickelback song whether they realize it or not - they're played at sports arenas, commercials, TV shows, video games, you name it! The guy went from selling drugs on oil rigs to being one of the wealthiest musicians in the world. He's a world-class businessman, not a world-class musician. And there's nothing wrong with that.
  11. Canceled my landline and use only my (company paid) cell phone. http://forums.twobillsdrive.com/index.php?showtopic=94606 Use a programmable thermostat to reduce the temperature when we're at work and sleeping (some people here seem to think it's ridiculous; I don't understand why you would pay to heat a house at times when nobody is there to care...). Increase the temperature during summer to avoid AC use. Watch movies in my home theater instead of at a movie theater -- tickets/popcorn are too expensive! Not sure if this is "frugal," but I frequently ask for discounts from service providers and even stores. No harm in asking - worst they'll say is no, but you'd be surprised how often you'll get lower prices (for example, see the DirecTV Sunday ticket thread).
  12. Funny you should say that. I haven't seen it (haven't even seen a preview...), but James Rocchi (movie reviewer - http://www.cinematical.com/bloggers/james-rocchi/ ) said on the radio this morning that he hasn't felt this excited after seeing a movie since he saw the Matrix and he left the movie wondering, "How'd they do that?!"
  13. For the record, I technically live in Wisconsin, right across the river....
  14. This story is getting quite a bit of play in Minnesota. http://www.startribune.com/politics/state/..._Yyc:aUycaEacyU
  15. We have UPS and power generators in our data center. We'd be fine.
  16. http://www.sysadminday.com/ Thanks Scott for running the board! "Let's face it, System Administrators get no respect 364 days a year. This is the day that all fellow System Administrators across the globe, will be showered with expensive sports cars and large piles of cash in appreciation of their diligent work. But seriously, we are asking for a nice token gift and some public acknowledgement. It's the least you could do. Consider all the daunting tasks and long hours (weekends too.) Let's be honest, sometimes we don't know our System Administrators as well as they know us. Remember this is one day to recognize your System Administrator for their workplace contributions and to promote professional excellence. Thank them for all the things they do for you and your business."
  17. Yes I have, actually. Not often (half dozen times at most), and it thaws out after 15-20 minutes of driving - but it still sucks. Would I pay extra for this though? No. So you have a good point.
  18. I realize that, but even the stuff that supposedly doesn't freeze until really cold temperatures still freezes up in the middle of January in Minnesota.
  19. You do realize that it gets colder than -25F in some places in the US, right....?
  20. Never realized BB had a Pearl flipphone. We had the non-flip version. Mine could go nearly an entire weekend without charging, so not sure if it's the phone (flip was different somehow?) or the battery that was your issue. I wasn't a huge fan of the Pearl, mainly because the browser sucked. The Bold is pretty cool though.
  21. Why not? Many access points are open on purpose. How can you tell the difference? What if you have an FM transmitter and I tune into the same frequency and am able to hear whatever you have connected to the transmitter? Is that wrong? Both use radio waves. What's the difference?
  22. Cable companies do that with internet access... It was especially bad ~7-10 years ago. One of the big advantages to DSL was that you had your own dedicated circuit to the CO.
  23. Consumer Reports does not recommend the iPhone4 due to the reception issue. http://www.startribune.com/science/9825611...D3aPc:_Yyc:aUUI
  24. CBS.com streams them, but that's online... Otherwise, I don't think so. You didn't miss much last night -- I wouldn't waste my time.
