  1. I wish they'd call me for jury duty.... I want to see what it's like...
  2. Don't be too concerned -- he said that he'd be away from the board for awhile and would return when he could, so it sounds like he knew he'd be without internet access for awhile.
  3. Funny story about Fox. I was chatting with a coworker about movies and such, and Fox came up. Another coworker came into the office and asked what we were talking about. We said "Megan Fox," and he looked at us blankly. We asked whether he'd seen Transformers, and he said he had. So we said, "You know, the Camero scene?" Blank stare... "Under the hood of the car...?" Blank stare... "Only thing worth watching in the movie...?" Blank stare... Then the first coworker said, "What team do you play for that you can't remember Megan Fox?!?!"
  4. That's the spirit I like! A big, "Screw you!" to the doctor. Good luck, Grant!!!!
  5. That's the point though, eInk doesn't look like a screen. You really take a look at it if you find anyone who has one. It's really quite amazing. Can't help with #2 and #3, although I think if people tried it, they'd be pleasantly surprised.
  6. Well, to be fair, a dishwasher is cheaper to run than doing the dishes by hand... You use less water and less soap. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/08/dishwasher_vs_h.php (if a site called "Treehugger.com" says so, it has to be true! )
  7. Kindle != Laptop. The Kindle weighs 10 ounces, is less than an inch thick, and has no backlight - uses eInk. It's nothing like any computer screen you have ever seen before. My wife loves it for many reasons: 1) Can read without glasses since you can adjust the font 2) No turning the pages -- press the "next" button that's on the side 3) Easier to hold than a book 4) Don't worry about losing your place Are these things worth $350? Probably not, but it's the price to pay for jumping on a new technology early. She's sure getting good use out of it!
  8. The library here is still going strong - and not just people using the computers. http://www.hudsonstarobserver.com/articles...mp;section=News In 2008, 323,964 items were circulated from the facility; that amounts to 1,100 volumes per day, six days a week.
  9. "School Resource Deputy Jerry Montague found toilet paper, paint and other trash thrown around the school courtyard when he arrived for work Thursday morning. Uprooted plants, damaged picnic tables and benches and motor oil and paint were dumped around the school. Elevators were damaged and several lightning rods torn off the roof, according to officials. Some graffiti was also discovered."
  10. Government housing isn't fully staffed. His plan said to have them job searching, not babysitting...
  11. So you want to build huge buildings to house over 7% of the countries population? And how do you propse to transport those people to these huge buildings? And where are we getting the money to babysit all of the children of these people?
  12. It goes far deeper than that. There just aren't enough resources. I talked to my wife about it (she's the director of a halfway house and has been in the field for a decade). She brought up a few great points. Not even talking about the cost of testing (tests cost about $6 for the instant cups that test for a few drugs, and if you have to send it to a lab, it costs about $5/drug you test for), there's also the question of children. If the government tests a parent and it comes up postiive, they need to get child protection involved, and we don't have the resources for that.
  13. But the proposed change is talking about unemployment too -- which, while run by the government, gets funding from companies and employees. Since you had to have had a job to claim unemployment, they're going to try taking money away that you'd already paid into the system. In addition - drug testing isn't free, so where is that money going to come from? Seems bogus to me.
  14. That's great! So, what's your name and email address again...? And that of your friend....?
  15. Well there's nothing stopping you from installing your own dish, if you can put it somewhere that gives you line of sight (a patio, balcony, driveway, etc). But since you're on the north side of the building, it's not very likely.... Those laws were put in for the very reason you noted -- cable companies were making deals with landlords to force tenants to buy their service. It still happens -- lumping cable TV into the rent, for example -- but the FCC stepped in and made it illegal to stop tenants from having dishes. Time to move.
  16. Sounds like http://www.linkedin.com Great for keeping your professional contacts close by -- especially in this economy.
  17. Yeah, the weather thing is completely overblown now. I used to lose signal during major downpours about 5-6 times a year, and only for about 5-10 minutes at most each time. However since I upgraded to the 5-LNB dish (required for all of the HD channels), I haven't lost signal at all -- more surface area on the dish makes the signal stronger and less prone to rain fade. So now I get over 100 HD channels PLUS I never have to worry about losing the signal. Three people where I work have switched in the past 6 months or so, and they're all love it as well -- and one of them even referred a family member to switch over too. Only 1 of those 4 people bought Sunday Ticket.
  18. Actually, the NFL doesn't get anything... DirecTV has already paid for the rights to do the broadcasts, the NFL doesn't get any more money by how many people sign up. Maybe you meant this as a major oversimplification -- but DirecTV doesn't need the Ticket to survive. Dish is doing just fine without it, and they're basically providing the same service. It helps their business, but isn't needed to survive. If the Ticket were available on cable and DirecTV, I doubt DirecTV would lose all that many customers as most people who have them, love their service. At the same time, they are definitely gaining customers by keeping the Ticket. Every year on TSW you see folks saying that they've switched because of the Ticket and that they now love DirecTV. Heck, there's at least one person in this thread who said that.
  19. I remember when player contracts were only $2,000,000/season instead of $12,000,000/season. You can't expect salaries to spiral out of control, but everything else stay the same - where do you think they get the cash to pay the contracts?
  20. Twitter is a site where you post one-liners about what you're doing for those who may care... Tweeting is the verb. I don't think twitting is anything.... Personally, I don't get Twitter at all, but maybe it's just me.
  21. Considering he was frakking Boomer at the start of season 1, do you think they needed him to be more receptive to Boomer....? Of course the REAL reason was the writers went, "Oh crap, we didn't have a plan on who the Final 5 Cylons were, and since we picked Chief while we were writing the season 3 finale, we have to try and explain that kid he had......" I won't even mention how lame the Tigh/Six pregnancy storyline was.
  22. Agree 100% on the backstory thing with Boomer. Lame. As for Kara's father -- if that's true and Thrace is half human, half Cylon -- then how did she disappear on New Earth? Or is she a special TELEPORTING Cylon? (I could see the writers saying that ). I also can't figure out why they bothered showing that Chief wasn't the father of Cali's baby. They mentioned it once, showed Hotdog how to be a dad, then never talked about it again... Oh well, I'll try to remember it for the first 2 seasons, and not the last 2.
  23. You put too much pressure on yourself. If you volunteer with her, just say, "Hey, want to grab some coffee after we're done working here sometime?" It's just coffee -- if she says no, she's not going to read anything more into it and you can still volunteer there. If she says yes, it's still just coffee -- but at least you can chat. Nothing you haven't been told before though, so I'll shut up now
  24. I was going to call on his behalf since he never seems to do it himself!
