  1. DirecTV has OnDemand if you have your receiver connected to your network. I watched some of the Olympics last year, and they were all cut down into bite-sized HD chunks. Very handy (that's the only time I've actually used OnDemand though - I have enough stuff recorded on my DVR )
  2. They updated their refer-a-friend program -- both parties get $100 now.
  3. That's why I'm blaming everyone in the medical industry
  4. I blame the entire medical industry -- doctors, hospitals, insurance, the whole thing. They're all a bunch of crooks, IMHO.
  5. He would've had to get that work done anyway since it doesn't sound like he's going to be ditching the car right after the road trip...
  6. There's actually a place in Sheboygan, WI that has very good wings too -- the guy's from Buffalo and setup a bar in WI. He enters WingFest every year and usually wins some awards.
  7. Disagree. I think it's low risk, high reward. $6M for a chance to make the playoffs? Plus the signing brought in a lot of season ticket renewals/subscriptions, so the $6M is pretty much peanuts. No risk for Buffalo, big potential upside.
  8. My wife's originally from Green Bay, WI, so we used to drive from Minneapolis to Green Bay once every month or so -- about 700 miles over a weekend. And we did that in a pretty crappy car when we were in college -- you'll be fine!
  9. You're only going 300 miles, and you're calling that a road trip.....?
  10. Talk to the landlord, see what he says. Your roommate is legally obligated to pay -- however, I think it's up to the landlord to collect, as long as the lease doesn't say something to the contrary. But again, talk to the landlord and work it out if Wild Child isn't going to pay.
  11. Filing literally costs $20 and you can ask for that back in the case when you file... It's really not that much of a hassle, except that he might potentially kill a friendship.
  12. Up to you, really. First, are all three of you on the lease? If not, you're probably screwed. If you are, then you have to decide if it's worth trashing a friendship over. I'm not sure how it works with multiple people on the lease -- but you could talk to the landlord and explain the situation. With the economy the way it is, maybe he'll reduce the rent. Probably not, but it might be worth asking. I'm not sure if you have to sue him in small claims court or if the landlord does. Part of it depends on who's on the lease, I'm sure. Is Wild Child leaving to go somewhere other than Chicago? In that case, you'll probably win hands down if you bring him to court since he probably won't be able to show up. Filing is easy - costs $20, and you hand-write what your complaint is. Then they mail you a court date. You show up, present your side of the story, the judge says, "Thanks," and a few days later they mail you the judgement. At least that's what happened when I had to sue my landlord.
  13. Good advice -- I changed mine out at around 100,000. It wasn't broken yet, but when it does break, you're screwed. The water pump should be changed at the same time from what I've read and it doesn't add much to the cost. Make sure your tires have good treads and are properly inflated. You'll be fine -- my wife have done the trip from Minneapolis to Niagara Falls a couple of times. In June, we're going from Minneapolis to Washington, DC, and then up to Niagara Falls. She has an '03 Corolla with (now) 127,000 miles and we're not worried about it. Have you thought about buying AAA? It's cheap and they'll help you out if you break down. Bring a GPS too - they're handy
  14. I've heard the song before, but never saw the video - pretty funny. http://myplay.com/video-player/weird-al-ya...bctid=815915897
  15. DirecTV = FiOS > Dish > antenna > TWC/Comcast/Charter/etc Prices for DirecTV are generally on par with cable nowadays. However, the service is 100x better, DirecTV has more HD than any other provider (and a LOT more than Comcast -- only a little more than Dish and FiOS). TWC doesn't have NFL Network (or won't in a day or two), and it's on the standard package with DirecTV. DirecTV is (finally) adding MRV to their receivers - meaning you can record a show on DVR A and watch it on DVR B. I believe UVerse already has this feature... The only downside to DirecTV?Dish are that the installers are frequently lazy and will tell you that you have no place to get a signal. If they tell you that, they're probably lying to get to an easier job. While it looks like the dish is pointing straight ahead, it's really pointing up in the sky -- so tall trees generally aren't a problem, unless you're right next to them.
  16. Save money, save your life, yet people still poke fun.
  17. Mozy can be configured as to how many resources you give it -- faster PC = slower backup. However, after the initial backup (which can easily take a month, depending on how much you're uploading), I never even notice it's running anymore... Just checked, and it's using 0% of CPU, and 47M of RAM (between both processes); my PC has been on for a couple of weeks straight. Not sure why you experienced issues.
  18. Less variables, yes. More reliable? Time will tell. Regardless - I highly recommend http://www.mozy.com for offsite backups.
  19. Be careful with the SSD drive -- they have a very limited number of read/write cycles per block, at which point it'll fail. We have a SAN device at work that uses all SSD drives in it -- cost about $500,000 for the array -- and there's logic built into the controller so that all of the writes get spread more evenly across the drives, but the home drives probably don't have that same level of intelligence built in. Basically - make sure you have backups! (which you should be doing regardless of whether it's a regular drive or an SSD)
  20. People complain about MS (myself included), but Apple's not much better when it comes to being overly protective and trying to squash fair use (although this isn't quite as bad as the universal garage door opener copmany that was sued...): http://www.eff.org/press/archives/2009/04/27 "Late last year, Apple lawyers demanded removal of some of the content on BluWiki, alleging that the discussions constituted copyright infringement and a violation of the DMCA's prohibition on circumventing copy protection measures. The discussions in question focused on how hobbyists might enable iPods and iPhones to work with desktop media management software other than Apple's own iTunes software, such as WinAmp and Songbird. Fearing legal action by Apple, OdioWorks took down the discussions from the BluWiki site."
  21. Is it officially going to be a trilogy? If so, that means Connor most likely won't die...
  22. I've actually been looking at them for awhile -- but they can be pretty expensive, and I wasn't sure how well they really work (although I haven't read anything negative about them). I was looking at these two, but do I really want to spend that much for something that cooks rice....? http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NS-ZCC10-C...id=2VP3LPK6RMCN http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NS-TGC10-C...id=2VP3LPK6RMCN
