Best Buy has a "buy 2, get 1 free" deal on Xbox games this week. I decided to buy Borderlands, Batman, and NHL10. They should be here today. Unfortunately, I feel like crap today so I'm not sure if I'll be able to play or not... Stupid cold/H1N1/whatever.

Yeah, exactly. We've had this, "It crashes all the time" discussion on the board before. Ever since Win2k, stability hasn't really been an issue. If you're still crashing, it's because you had bad hardware. I leave my WinXP system up for months at a time. Of course, my OpenBSD box can be up for even longer... But it's a server.

I know C, C++, Scheme, TCL/Tk, bourne, along with some Perl and SQL. I learned them either in school or on my own. My family doesn't know how to program.

Reeves stands around like a cardboard cutout. Next up: Gremlins

What's wrong with 4...? DirecTV doesn't charge anything extra for a DVR vs a regular receiver... I have 4 as well.

That's what I countered with last night -- Fred Jackson and Warner for Cassel and one of those HBs (well, I didn't ask for Turner because I know he's really high on the guy). We'll see what happens...

Then turn off automatic updates and do them yourself whenever you want...

The "Crap" isn't from Vista, but rather from whomever you bought the PC from. They install all sorts of their own crap on the PC to either sell you stuff or to make your life "easier." You won't get any of that crap if you install a retail version of Win7. Then again, you won't get it if you install a retail version of Vista either... You have to install frequent updates on any OS you run (yes, even Mac - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338 - "Apple frequently releases software updates that you can download" ). Can't speak on file locations... CW

I know some people who have been using the beta for many months and think it's great -- including some UNIX folks, for what it's worth. Is it worth paying for the upgrade? That's for you to decide... You might be better off just buying a new computer, depending on how old it is. I believe Win7 is around $130, give or take -- you can buy a new PC for about $400-$600. Food for thought. For example: http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/25727/Dell...s-7-Premium-484 Or a laptop: http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/25697/Tosh...tion-64-bit-600

I'm in a keeper league. I have Rivers as my starting QB and Warner as my backup. I have Moreno, Steve Jackson, Fred Jackson, Willie Parker, and Reggie Bush as HBs... So I'm weak there. A trade offer came in for Matt Cassel and Felix Jones for Warner. He also has LeSean McCoy and Ray Rice as backup HBs - along with Ronnie Brown and Michael Turner. So I'm thinking Felix Jones might be too risky after the injury, but I don't know if he'll give up on of the others... My receivers are Roddy White and Colston -- two possible keepers for next year. Thoughts? CW

So because the digital download/upgrade process didn't work, you're saying that makes the product less than 90% ready...?

Microsoft Bob was way worse too.

Every operating system (and most pieces of software in general) will have updates that are required, especially related to security. That's not a knock on MS, every company deals with it. How often do you have to update Adobe Acrobat Reader for crying out loud? As for Windows 7 -- it's been available to the public as a free beta test for at least 6 months, probably a lot longer. I know a dozen people who have been using it for that time, a few of them are using it as their actual desktop. Is it going to be completely problem free? No. Neither is Mac. Neither is Solaris. Neither is RedHat. OpenBSD is the only one that comes close, and even that has a few updates every 6 months. As for the download issue in this case -- it could very well be a Digital River issue, and not a MS problem. We have no idea, and likely never will. Because it's an MS product, they'll take the hit (and they won't want to make their vendor look bad), but it's probably not entirely their issue this time around. Who would've thought I'd be defending MS....?

Never heard of that one. Interesting... Although I can't see myself ever needing it - I'd prefer the "desktop" button in the launch bar. http://www.istartedsomething.com/20081103/...ith-aero-shake/

It's supposedly much more streamlined and efficient than Vista, and therefore runs on lesser hardware. One of my Solaris instructors said he was using it for 4-5 months on a small netbook and it worked great - he was quite shocked. I'm still skeptical, but early reports are positive, even from traditionally anti-Windows folks I know. Anyone else think that "snap" feature they talk about on the commercial is really lame though? "Look, if you drag this window all the way over here, then drag this window all the way over here, you can then see them both!" Ummm, yeah, and if you just sized your windows the way you wanted instead of dragging them off the screen, you'd see them too.

Why I fired my Secretary. Last week was my birthday and I didn't feel very well waking up on that morning.. I went downstairs for breakfast hoping my wife would be pleasant and say, 'Happy Birthday!', and possibly have a small present for me. As it turned out, she barely said good morning, let alone 'Happy Birthday.' I thought.... Well, that's marriage for you, but the kids... They will remember. My kids came bounding down stairs to breakfast and didn't say a word.. So when I left for the office, I felt pretty low and somewhat despondent. As I walked into my office, my secretary Jane said, 'Good Morning Boss, and by the way Happy Birthday!'' It felt a little better that at least someone had remembered. I worked until one o'clock, when Jane knocked on my door and said, 'You know, it's such a beautiful day outside, and it is your Birthday, what do you say we go out to lunch, just you and me..' I said, 'Thanks, Jane, that's the greatest thing I've heard all day. Let's go !' We went to lunch. But we didn't go where we normally would go. She chose instead at a quiet bistro with a private table. We had two martinis each and I enjoyed the meal tremendously. On the way back to the office, Jane said, 'You know, It's such a beautiful day... We don't need to go straight back to the office, Do We ?' I responded, 'I guess not. What do you have in mind ?' She said, 'Let's drop by my apartment, it's just around the corner.' After arriving at her apartment, Jane turned to me and said,' Boss, if you don't mind, I'm going to step into the bedroom for just a moment. I'll be right back.' 'Ok.' I nervously replied. She went into the bedroom and, after a couple of minutes, she came out carrying a huge birthday cake.... Followed by my wife, my kids, and dozens of my friends and co-workers, all singing 'Happy Birthday'. And I just sat there.... On the couch... Naked.

Everyone knows I'm a huge DirecTV fan. They have the most real HD channels and top-notch customer service. If you don't live in the Buffalo area, you can get Center Ice and get the Sabres games. However, DirecTV does not currently have Versus (dispute between Comcast and DirecTV), so if the game is on that channel I don't think you'd get it. It also sounds like they'll have a DirecTV/TiVo receiver sometime early next year *fingers crossed* DirecTV also gives you the option to get Sunday Ticket -- I paid $150 this year for all of the NFL games in HD. Killer deal. That said, Dish is a little cheaper and currently carries the Versus channel (not sure if it's in HD or not). That means more hockey for you. Their DVR isn't quite as good, but it does allow you to connect it to multiple TVs -- I'm not sure if you can get HD on both of them or not though. You can't go wrong with either of them.

The HP HDX16t. Decent box, and I got a good deal - about $600. 17" monitor (1920x1080), 4G RAM, 320G 7200RPM drive, dual core CPU, etc. I want to use it as a portable Photoshop box -- but since I haven't started using it yet, I'll upgrade to Win7 before installing PS CS4 and see what happens.

I agree with EC on this one. Win7 has been in beta for a long time -- lots of people have been using it for many many months. I even know a lot of UNIX guys who say it looks like MS got it right this time and actually LIKE Win7.... This might not even be a Windows mistake as much as a Digital River mistake. I just bought a new laptop last month, so will probably upgrade it to Win7 since it's free, to see what I think about it first hand. It can't be worse than Vista, right?

In honor of Cincy's post, let's play a game. I'll post the name of a movie, and the next poster boils it down to a few sentences and then names another movie for the next poster. I'll throw out a softball first: Titanic.
