Why did we go back to him then? And why declare he's the starter when healthy? Not seeing it. Time will tell. Not saying he'll be back, not saying he won't.
-
I disagree. When Hotrod got his knee boo boo, Coach McDermott declared when healthy he would be the starter. He has a little confidence anyway. Coaches want to win. I have no ideas what's going to happen in the off season. But I do think that Hotrod getting cut is far from certain. I'd be good with Case but not McCown.
-
Based on everything the team has been through (17 years etc), if we make the playoffs, Hotrod deserves to be presumptive starter next year PERIOD IMHO. A team wins because of it's QB.

ESPN predicts Alex Smith as starting Bills QB in 2018.

Maybe zero for these 2 guys, but many teams do very well with other teams cast offs. Drew Brees won a SB Trent Dilfer won a SB Curt Warner got back to SB Craig Morton went to a SB Fish did the El Perfecto with a cast off (Earl Moral playing most of the year) Cardinals have gone to playoffs several times with Palmer. Broncos went to 2 SBs winning 1 with castoff Manning Raiders went to SB with Rich Gannon 49ers won SB with castoff Steve Young Bucs won SB with Brad Johnson Bills made playoffs twice with castoff Flutie Vikings won division with castoff Case Keenum playing most of year Vikings were a missed FG from going to SB with Randall Cunningham Packers won a SB with castoff Favre Seahawks went to SB with castoff Hasselbeck Washington went to playoffs with Brunell Cheaps got eliminated by Bills with castoff Joe Montana at QB Vikings went to playoffs with castoff Favre Castoffs can be good. We need a better QB. No sense in not even considering a place where many playoff QBs and even some SB winners came from. -
Bills Barnwell Projects the 2018 Veteran QB Market

Why can't we do both? -
If/when Say starts catching footballs consistently I'll give him a break. Just because Jerry Rice struggled the first couple of years has no bearing on if Zay will ever be good. James Hardy struggled the first couple of years too Jerry Rice worked through by practicing A LOT. I hope Zay is doing likewise.

That injury makes me real nervous about Teddy. Of the 3 Vikings soon to be FA QBs I like Case the best. -

Smith is a real QB. He's pretty much what tankers want to get with a high pick. In fact, he was the number 1 pick in the draft. And, we already know he's not a bust. Maybe we would have an inside track since Andy was Coach MCDermott's mentor. -

Jets Cardinals Washington if they dump cousins Clowns Broncos (Elway loves signing veteran QBs. What does he know we don't?) 49ers if they decide Jimmy is too expensinve Trade Andy back his number 1. Would be a great deal for us. Championship -

I doubt this VERY seriously. If Alex gets cut, a bidding war will ensue. There are a lot of QB needy teams out there besides us. I'd offer them the 1 we got from them last year. -

I don't like Tommy at all in case you didn't notice. But I'm always in favor of someone saying up yours to THE MAN when he's after something that's none of his GD bidness. Get a warrant. -
Mine is up right now! Right across the street from my neighbor and his Seahawks flag. (He thinks Hotrod is good btw).
-
Right. Sounds like another Rob Johnson trade. Right. Sounds like another Rob Johnson trade. Obviously the smartest man on the planet didn't think he was good enough. I'm far from sold on Jimmy. He's had one good game for whiners so far. Very well could be another Rob Johnson. Maybe if he puts up big numbers and they beat Mr. Big Stuff/ Poz and he rest of the Jaguar D?

The lesson her is build up the D in the off season. If we don't, we'll still be in purgatory no matter who we get. -

They won a bunch of games that year and made the playoffs. Do WR TDs count more than other TDs? There are no style points in football. Alex would look great in a Bills suit. LOL. Just LOL. -
Settle? H E double Hockey Sticks NO! Keep looking. But don't dump what we got. Bring in someone else and let him battle Hotrod for the job in mini camps, Training Camp, and PS. Best man wins. Like every other position on the team. I think we both want a better QB. I'm just not willing to cut bait on Hotrod just yet when we have no one behind him. When we have someone better, we can consider it. Would be cool to try to get some depth at the QB position for a change.

On the bolded: Yes and No. Some QBs due to their skill and leadership can lift the play of the entire team. And, due to their late game clutchness can get more wins. Some are good in the clutch and others are not. For an example we have to look no further than our own Bills. Between 1998 and 2001 the Bills had 2 QBs that played. With Rob Johnson starting, the Bills were 9-17. With Doug Flutie starting, the bills were 21-9. Same team. Same WRs. Same OC. Same Offensive line. One QB could win with that team and one could not. Bills obviously screwed up. Should have hired xRUSHx for GM. He knows how to properly build a team. Beane obviously does not. I agree we have not drafted many QBs, but I think saying we've done nothing is a little harsh. We need to try harder. But at the same time, don't dump a guy that you can win with for a possible maybe. Even if it's not the proper way to build a team IMHO. Dumping everyone and drafting a rookie QB and putting him in and starting over is far from a fool proof plan. I agree. Actually the Bills are 22-19 with Hotrod. Some of the QB win sites don't count the first game as a Hotrod start because actually Matt Cassell took the first snap. Hotrod was on the field and took the rest. Not counting that is silly IMHO. Everyone thinks Hotrod is a good QB except Bills fans. As I recall, some Bills fans wanted Frank to start over Jim Kelly too.

He still cheated (4 game suspension and his team was fined $250,000.00 and docked draft picks). He's tainted like the rest of the Patsies** and thier Lombardis. He's not a Bill, never has been a Bill, and never will get a Bill. So we'll never know if we'd love him or not. -
