  1. I think this is an interesting and somewhat relevant comparison - especially considering Kelly's greater experience. The fact is that none of us know how EJs career will pan out. As an optimist, I'm hoping for the best. He has lots of great qualities for a successful QB. Sometimes, I think people forget that performing as an NFL QB is the most difficult job in all of sports. At this stage, he is still a very young prospect who is learning how to play the position. Patience is what is needed........
  2. Gailey seems to be the opposite mindset from Jauron. I remember Jauron's press conferences stating how it is hard to win in the NFL and if you make mistakes you loose. With Jauron's mindset, if you don't play a perfect game you likely loose. I love it that Chan comes along with the mind set of expecting to win. The No Names listen to him and amazingly, with smart coaching, they are winning! Winning breeds confidence with higher expectations and personal accountability. If they keep winning like this, he'll be on the short list for Coach of the Year.
  3. I too love the emphasis on building a dominant defense through tough, aggressive players. This team needs an identity and if this draft is successful, it looks like they will develop into a nasty defensive team. The plan appears to be to first fix the defense and then bring in our future franchise QB. From what I've seen so far, next years QB class looks to have some promising options with more of them playing in college pro style offenses than this years group.
  4. I have not seen that before. I laughed as I envisioned the dummy being Brady. A Bills fan can dream, can't we? I love this pick even more!!! Thanks for posting this.
  5. For what its worth, I saw Trent Dilfer on ESPN this evening raving about Cam's pro day work out. He thought what was most impressive was his ability to understand why he was overthrowing receivers and ability to self correct his throwing motion to hit his receivers. Personally, I think Dilfer is one of the smartest football guys in the media and certainly a lot more knowledgeable about QBs than Kiper & McShay. Dilfer felt very strong about Newton's ability to develop to a "high ceiling". I'm not an advocate of taking a QB at 3 but if we get him, I'll back him 100%. What I really want though is a nasty DEFENSE!
  6. This is the #1 problem with the Bills. They do not know how to evaluate college players. Good drafting is what separates the good teams from the scrubs, like us. It is unbelievable to me how Modrak & his scouts still have their jobs. Hopefully, Chan/Nix can improve upon the past drafts.
  7. When Felser wrote that column I don't know what he was thinking of with respect to his points 5-7. We have backup QBs on staff. Our wide receivers are serviceable and we have plenty of decent cornerbacks. I'm not sure in what order we need them (given the emergence of Fitz) but QB, RT, DE & LB, LB, LB should be the positions we target.
  8. Anyone who thinks Locker is a top pick in the draft hasn't been watching him play this year. He looked very ordinary last night vs Arizona.
  9. I can recall several times during this long horrible era of Bills football where Ralph bemoaned the lack of talent on this team yet the pattern repeats year after year. Ralph is 100% responsible for the lack of accountability by those who are evaluating and drafting the players that is at the root of this problem. Their draft picks fail at an amazing rate and the talent evaluators remain in their jobs. Part of it may be the "team" approach to drafting they have used in the past. There is no one who is ultimately responsible for drafting a player like Maybin - instead it is "collective failure". Anything Ralph says is meaningless until we see the needed changes in this organization in the scouting/ player evaluation department. The Kelsay 4 yr deal is the latest sign that the front office wisdom hasn't improved yet. I am very cautiously hopeful that over time, Nix & Gailey can fix this mess.
  10. "But the main reason we should want Mallett is because he's a senior. I don't care how big of a prospect it is, I don't want to draft a QB coming out early. " I agree. In addition to stats, experience and other measurable traits, I would like to see the next QB we draft have a burning competitive desire with an absolute hatred of losing and strong leadership qualities. A bonus would be if he "fits" personality wise with the Buffalo community. IMO Trent Edwards lacked in the competitiveness and leadership categories and never really "fit" this team. On the surface, I don't know if Mallettt has these other intangible traits.
  11. My bad - I must have looked at the wrong number in a stats table. I guess him & that guy in NE are the odd ones. On the upside - the UC brewery is just down the road from me & I am also a happy customer!
  12. Players coming out too soon may well be part of the problem of why there are so many QB busts in the NFL. A few more QB failures that I looked up: JP Losman - low college completion % Matt Leinhart - didn't start enough college games Jason Campbell - low Wonderlic score and not enough college starts I'm becoming a believer in the 26-27-60 Rule!
  13. Using the article as a guide - Luck wont have enough starts after this year and Locker's completion % isn't high enoug, so out of those three Mallett looks to have the best potential.
  14. Interesting article.... Using the guide in the article - Trentative would not have projected as an NFL success as he did not have enough starts in college. Ryan Mallett looks to project as a success though if he can pass the Wonderlic test.
  15. I thought Brohm performed very well last night. His passes were accurate with a quick release, delivered on time and with velocity. Fitz & Brohm are pretty much equal but Brohm is younger and I think has more potential up side than Fitz. Fitz is what he is - an OK backup who will not make great plays. Brohm as a QB is still a work in progress and seems to me to have more upside and better arm strength. I think Brohm is also less likely to be injured due to his thicker body build. Fitz & TE have similar skills and abilities. Brohm can make passes that Fitz can't. His passes just seem to have much better velocity on it. I hope they keep Brohm & cut Fitz.
  16. I agree with those who suggest that Russ Grimm would be a great choice. Check him on Wikipedia - he's got great experience and I think would bring a toughness and commitment to the run game that has been lacking on this team. Mental and physical toughness have been talked about by Williams, Mularkey and Juron, but their teams have rarely displayed it on the field. The current team does have talent, but it is soft in the core areas - offensive line, QB, D line, head coach and offensive coordinator. Any potential coach must be committed to developing a tough, smart team that is committed to the running game so that the team can be successful in the cold, rain, wind and snow of Buffalo. You have to have that commitment to the running game during all 16 games, not just the second half of the season. Poor weather should be welcomed as a competitive advantage for the Bills anywhere they play. Sadly, that is not the case with the current team. "When it's too tough for them, it's just right for us!" - Marv
